Good video. I have E. Tenellus in my tank and, you're right, it's a aggressive carpet plant. It was supposed to be just the left front of the tank, but runners have gone everywhere. It's stayed fairly short, too, maybe an effect of having a Planted+ on just a 20-long, so fairly shallow. Substrate is eco-complete, btw.

@AQUAPROS8 жыл бұрын
+Rommel R ph 7.2 GH and KH are both 4
@cjday5738 жыл бұрын
Rommel R what exactly do you mean by happy? commercially available rummynose tetras have been bred to the point of tolerating a wide range of parameters except very alkaline water as it messes with their kidneys. If they aren't very red in the nose, you may be looking at a disease or parasites, high levels of something like nitrate or ammonia, or even just them being uncomfortable in the tank. Maybe not enough of the tetras for them to shoal effectively, or there could be a larger fish that is causing them to hide or become stressed. I recently got some danios, which are top swimmers, and my rummynose are much more outgoing and very aggressive feeders.
@HM-lk3pq8 жыл бұрын
chris day I meant that Mike's rummies noses are blood red and to me that's a sign of being happy. I have 6 rummies 3 zebras and 1 brilliant rasbora. For a while I've been having a problem with my own rummies noses not showing any red. Then one day I sunk 3 almond leaves and when the tannins released, the noses started turning red. My water is hard here, I think over 7.6. I got some seachem acid buffer and I've been dosing 1/4 teaspoon for 3 days now on my mr aqua 12gal long. It's still at 7.6. I have pool filter sand as my substrate and dragon stones and no plants yet. I'm even using organic peat inside my HOB. I don't wanna use the seachem long term. I don't wanna use RO because of the cost. What do you recommend I do?
@cjday5738 жыл бұрын
Rommel R based on your description, I'd say you either don't have enough fish, or the lack of plants is stressing them out due to there being minimal hiding places. If they got more red after the tannins leached from your almond leaves, its quite possible that the darkening of the water helped, or maybe the actual leaves being in the tank provided some sort of shelter for them. I personally keep my rummies in tap water with a PH of 8.4, so I don't think it's your parameters. Personally I would add more dither or top swimming fish if you could manage it, rummies sort of rely on top swimmers to signal that everything is okay in the open water, or in the absence of dither fish, large shoaling numbers create security.

Gravel can work depending on the plant. I can't help you much there, but other vids should. @jimsfishroom15675 жыл бұрын
I've avoided using carpet plants in my heavily planted tanks (see videos at "Jim's fish room updates...") thinking that food would fall into them and the fish wouldn't be able to get at that food. The dropped food would decay and foul up the tank water. Any opinions as to why my thinking isn't founded?
@Chaos_Draco5 жыл бұрын
You could trim down the carpets once in a while to make an "open space" near the middle and add the food there. It makes it a little more practical and visually a pleasing
@jimsfishroom15675 жыл бұрын
@@Chaos_Draco That's an interesting idea. But in feeding from the top, the food floats down all over the place, and if/when it falls into that non-open carpeted area, wouldn't the fish not be able to find/est it, and thus foul the trank?
@Chaos_Draco5 жыл бұрын
