Good video. I have E. Tenellus in my tank and, you're right, it's a aggressive carpet plant. It was supposed to be just the left front of the tank, but runners have gone everywhere. It's stayed fairly short, too, maybe an effect of having a Planted+ on just a 20-long, so fairly shallow. Substrate is eco-complete, btw.

Rommel R what exactly do you mean by happy? commercially available rummynose tetras have been bred to the point of tolerating a wide range of parameters except very alkaline water as it messes with their kidneys. If they aren't very red in the nose, you may be looking at a disease or parasites, high levels of something like nitrate or ammonia, or even just them being uncomfortable in the tank. Maybe not enough of the tetras for them to shoal effectively, or there could be a larger fish that is causing them to hide or become stressed. I recently got some danios, which are top swimmers, and my rummynose are much more outgoing and very aggressive feeders.
@HM-lk3pq
@HM-lk3pq 8 жыл бұрын
chris day I meant that Mike's rummies noses are blood red and to me that's a sign of being happy. I have 6 rummies 3 zebras and 1 brilliant rasbora. For a while I've been having a problem with my own rummies noses not showing any red. Then one day I sunk 3 almond leaves and when the tannins released, the noses started turning red. My water is hard here, I think over 7.6. I got some seachem acid buffer and I've been dosing 1/4 teaspoon for 3 days now on my mr aqua 12gal long. It's still at 7.6. I have pool filter sand as my substrate and dragon stones and no plants yet. I'm even using organic peat inside my HOB. I don't wanna use the seachem long term. I don't wanna use RO because of the cost. What do you recommend I do?
@cjday573
@cjday573 8 жыл бұрын
Rommel R based on your description, I'd say you either don't have enough fish, or the lack of plants is stressing them out due to there being minimal hiding places. If they got more red after the tannins leached from your almond leaves, its quite possible that the darkening of the water helped, or maybe the actual leaves being in the tank provided some sort of shelter for them. I personally keep my rummies in tap water with a PH of 8.4, so I don't think it's your parameters. Personally I would add more dither or top swimming fish if you could manage it, rummies sort of rely on top swimmers to signal that everything is okay in the open water, or in the absence of dither fish, large shoaling numbers create security.

Hey thanks for the vid! I have a 50 gallon hi tech planted tank, and have been slowly converting my 10 gallon to plants. Within the last week i have planted dwarf hair grass as a carpeting plant. I am also using the 24/7 finnex planted LED light, so my question is how happy are you with the light in regards to plants? I've never used LED before and was wondering long term your thoughts. Since i have it on a 10 gallon its quite a bit shallower than a 90 gallon. Thanks in advance :) Also do you use the 24/7 settings or do you use it on a separate timer?

So, I'm thinking of growing plants in already established 55 gal tank with fish. Is this still possible? I mean I could take the fish out add nutrient rich soil, etc. And get this started without harming the fish? Because it seems I will need to take out the substrate thats in there right now. .... Just wanted to get an idea what Im in for, what kind of supplies I'll need. Any suggestions or tips or links would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks for your time! Btw, I enjoyed your video and like the work and what your doing!

So, I recently started a small 5 gallon starter aqua scaping tank that eventually will hopefully be a feeder shrimp breeding tank. I have some hairgrass and some dwarf swords coming for it as well as some micro swords and water sprites. Hoping it goes well once the plants get established. Learning the "patience" part from my red eared terrapin hatchling whose constantly teaching me- and he's already learned the art of begging and that sometimes I am a sucker for those little begging eyes and the fact that he will keep staring at me as I am working on my computer. An off the subject question for you is, what species of shrimp in your opinion are colorful and easy to breed?

Gravel can work depending on the plant. I can't help you much there, but other vids should. I've avoided using carpet plants in my heavily planted tanks (see videos at "Jim's fish room updates...") thinking that food would fall into them and the fish wouldn't be able to get at that food. The dropped food would decay and foul up the tank water. Any opinions as to why my thinking isn't founded?
@Chaos_Draco

You could trim down the carpets once in a while to make an "open space" near the middle and add the food there. It makes it a little more practical and visually a pleasing

@@Chaos_Draco That's an interesting idea. But in feeding from the top, the food floats down all over the place, and if/when it falls into that non-open carpeted area, wouldn't the fish not be able to find/est it, and thus foul the trank?

G'day mate, What plants do you recommend for creating the illusion of depth in an aquarium? I realise that bigger leaf plants in the foreground working towards the back with smaller leaves to tiny leaf plants would create depth. Also using brighter coloured leaves in the foregrond and working your way towards the back with less brighter coloured plants would also create the illusion of depth. So can you recommend plants to create this illusion of depth?

I want a planted tank for my kuhlie loach tank but I'm worried that if I use rocks or gravel they will get hurt, should I use gravel and sand? Or just have a lot of carpet plants for them to hide in?

Silver Fawn I'd like to know too !! So far I've found that Java fern and Anubias are good for the cold/low light conditions

I used alot of floating plants it worked well because u can out lights on and the plants themselves give some cover from the light and the axies took mouthfuls of the duckweed and played with it XD but u can plant an axie tank u just need to be aware that thwy will more then likely ruin it for one and two u need alot of hiding places for um to get away from the light and stay away from ths light

For me it's always been cuba. Grow it like crazy with no CO2 or ferts. It is easy to grow, as long as you don't have fish that dig it up.

when the carpet is thick like the repens, do you still gravel vac it or does the plant use up the waste/dirt?

+Pa. Fish Preacher I still siphon it, lots of waste gets trapped in it

I like that some of these are BIG Tank 'carpets'... as my 55 is of course also 21 inches deep.

Plant on the right side around 10 - 11 minute mark. Looks like a mini fern. What's it called?

Hey Mike, some of the S. repens in your tank seems to have a bit of hair algae. I've a glossostigma carpet but it's full of green hair algae, any suggestion to remove it fast without destroying my gloso carpet? thanks!

+Ricardo Ortiz try spraying some hydrogen peroxide on it, just a few sprays though if you have a tank under 40 gallons
