I think Americans overreacted to the Zebra Mussel scare. People who had Marimo balls in their tank for years were taking them out and pretty much taking a flamethrower to them. C'mon, if you've already had them for years there aren't any mussels on them. Besides that, the US is already infested with them. I live in the Great Lakes region which is already infested. If you buy any kind of aquatic plant in the US it could theoretically have zebra mussels in them, but we don't go crazy and kill all our aquatic plants. You can still buy them. I did. If you're really paranoid about it you could keep them in a quarantine tank for awhile. If you're that paranoid you should already be doing that with everything you put in your tank. You could also treat your plants with No Planaria or some other medicine that kills snails.

i was gonna say too that he sounded really ridiculous throwing out his moss balls. Zebra muscles are already infesting the US, i personally live on lake erie and the beaches don’t even have sand, its all just zebra muscle shells. The infestation is horrible and insane, but moss balls definitely weren’t gonna tip the scales, it’s already as bad as it gets 😂

@@oscrates Same where I live by lake Michigan. The beaches are now made of zebra mussel shells. Wouldn't make a bit of difference if I had one in my tank. In fact, I think that would be kinda cool, though I doubt they'd live long in a fish tank. They were brought to the US by cargo ships from Europe and Asia - where they're from - and not by moss balls, though it's a good idea to inspect and quarantine livestock from other countries.

If an aquascaper has mossballs in they're scape, they're good scapers. The trick is to figure out where they look natural if they're wedged permanently. Between rocks, in crevices of driftwood, half buried in super coarse gravel. You can also de-ball them and use them like real moss as a hardscape covering.

Thing I would add to the list if it was me: Limnofolia heterophylla (most would say sessiflora - but one of them), hygrofolia difformis or perhaps polysperma, hornwort and probably water lettuce too. Perhaps even valisnaria. Oh yeah, and Elodea densa. I litteraly forgot that in a tank that started to leak. I put it outside for several months, - even over the winer. I think it was even covered from the sun for a month or two. And still the plant is alive.

Like you I have a lot of tanks. And duckweed in most. But actually I quite like it. It tells a lot about the tank. If it goes yellow, if the roots are getting way long, if it start growing even faster than usual etc. And it's a "buffer" for nitrate. If you get a spike they probably will absorb most.

I had guppy grass and it disintegrated with a couple of days. Hornweed grows like mad, you start with one stem and with in a month you have a tank full, it's crazy stuff! Duckweed grows like crazy too, both are good for selling for a bit of petty cash, they grow like wildfire. Duckweed is also good because it helps kill of algae as it blocks a lot of light out when covering the top. Anubias I find just melt and die off after a few weeks but leave it alone and new leaves grow. Bucephalandra is amazing too but slow growing which is no bad thing. Crypts are good but you have to keep feeding root tabs which gets expensive.

I have tried probably 40-50 different plants over the years. I was told that Java Moss and Java Fern were indestructible - I tried several times and they just died on me. i bought two varieties of Pogostemon - Erectus and Octopus and planted them side by side in the same tank. The erectus died withing a few weeks but the Octopus just went wild and took over the whole tank. I have a couple of Bucephalandra which I've had for over three years, they have put out probably 4 or 5 leaves in that time. They are not dying, they're almost dormant. My Crypts just grow like wildfire, I've never suffered from melt. I now stick with 6 or 7 plants that I know will do well even though I have no idea why others do not.

I’ve tried dirted and sand. I’ve tried substrate and sand. I’ve gotten all the fertilizers needed. All I get is melted plants. I truly believe some people have the right energy for specific things to happen. I am an orchid specialist owning over 1K orchids. Experts are amazed on how I keep them. Others try to do as I do and they have no luck. I guess I’ll just stick to breeding guppies.

I'm surprised that someone so adept at Orchids has problem with planted aquaria. I would think that you have the mindset to grow aquatic plants, considering that Orchids are grown on a sparse care interval. Largely when someone is having problems with their new planted tank it's because they get impatient with the nitrogen cycle. Actually letting the tank just be for a few weeks to establish some micro organisms ( keep the fertilizers to a minimum...) Gentle neglect is actually better when you just want to get some plants to initially survive. Start with simple low light plants that don't need substrate, you can use gravel, but it should not be something like Aquasoil as your first tank. something more inert and maybe a very little amount of crushed Dolomite or coral sand to add some light mineralization, Ca and Mg for the plants, also helps establish a viable bacteria and microfaune culture.

You know what is so weird? I have been aquascaping since 2019 and always have done high tech. I have 7 rimless aquariums (UNS and Waterbox) and I have high tech lights from onf, chihiros, twinstar, and fluval. I can grow every plant no problem and I go heavy on the co2, my water is great very low tds and pretty soft from the tap and the one thing that never has done well for me is bucephelandra. No matter what species I try it always melts away and doesnt come back. I've probably tried over 5 times over the last 5 years with many different varieties. So now I just grow them emersed in my terrariums and wabi kusa. I did have one last quite a long time, and then I took the scape down and put it in my bin. I can grow hc cuba like no other, monte carlo, elecharis belem, parvula, pusilla. Rotala hra, rotundofolia, mini pelia, pinnatifida, about 6 variants of java fern, crypts up the wazoo etc etc. yet one of the easiest plants just never acclimates to my water for some reason. Im ok just growing it in my emersed setups. I have been growing the same plamts for years on end. the same plantback and forth from submerged to emersed to tubs to wabi kusa to terrarium, still going strong. lol buce is my bane, but its so pretty. maybe i should give it another try with a new variety. Good news is buce looks just as pretty emersed as submerged.I wonder if it is something in my tap water that buce hates because I use RODI for my emersed plants.

Last week I harvested hornwort out of my 5 tanks, I filled up a Walmart bag and had to throw it away😢. I wish I had someone to give it to but I live in a very rural part of Pennsylvania and I don’t know of any fish keepers.

The plants that I have had good luck with. Pretty much any crypt, even the supposed hard to grow ones I have had good luck with. Java ferns (I have an old fake tree tank decoration that I repurposed by gluing Java Fern on it. It is now the centerpiece plant in my 40 gallon tank.), Pogostemon Stellatus Octopus (needs to be in a tall tank unless you want to be trimming it allot), Red Tiger Lotus have also done well for me. The Amazon sword did too good. I got rid of it because it took over the tank it was in. I have a fairly new tank with a large variety of Buce in it that is doing nice. The Buce is a slow grower, so you have to give it time. Bolbitis is another slow grower, but seems pretty hardy. No tank is complete though without Java moss and Sun asserting. Java moss grows even in the dark and shrimp adore it. Subwassertang is hardy, but slow growing. My favorite though is all the different crypts. They are my go to and they are typically a good price. I had Jungle Val in my tall tank, but I didn’t like it. It grew well and would take over the tank. I was forever pulling up runners, so I finally got rid of it and went with the Octopus plant instead. Just note, my plevos made a dinner out of guppy grass. I ended up with stems. The only plant my plecos like to eat. For floaters, I like red root floaters, Frogbit and dwarf water lettuce. I won’t let duckweed anywhere near my tanks. I don’t like any of the floaters with the smaller leaves. The red root floaters are gorgeous with good light as the leaves and roots are red. Be warned, with floating plants, they all grow fast and you will have to thin them out weekly.

I've had bad luck with jungle val, but that may be my own fault. I ordered it during the worst of last summer and i think the roots cooked during shipping. Plant still looks awful. I've had great luck with crypts, anubias, cabomba, and dwarf sagittaria. Been meaning to try some buce, didn't realize it was iridescent tho. Gotta get it now lol.

@Aquapros: Buce is almost all wild collected and is actually now endangered due to it's popularity in aquascaping and the fact that it only grows in a small region. Please don't 'push' it on your show. Cory (aquarium co-op) will only sell aquacultured buce for that reason and he has a very hard time finding any.

@@letsgonow5641 You absolutely have no idea what you are talking about, I have watched almost every video Cory has made (you clearly have not) and he has been very up front about his entire painstaking processes from start to finnish with all of his products. Cory has talked about why he unfortunately has his products made in China and also that as soon as he/anyone submits a well thought out plan to the fabricators his and everyone elses ideas and plans are immediately pirated and sold on Amazon, Ally Express, Temu and other sites and not with the same quality inside components but they look the same on the outside. This is a known big problem with doing business with China for all of our buisnesses and industries, including our tech industries. Point is, get your facts straight about who is ripping off whom. BTW, I only mentioned Cory's stance on Buce to Mike because I know he and Cory are friends and I thought maybe they could talk about it.

If there is a lot of moss, the light may not reach the interior.Or if it is new and bought in the store it is raised above water and consequently when you put it under water it has to adapt and should settle over time
