If you run the heat gun on the self leveling sealer,it will produce a nice slick good looking seal. The heat gun makes all the air bubbles pop out instantly, creating a seal with no bubbles.

Pete, You are exactly right as this is how it is done and what it looks like. I now know how to recreate the same exact look that is under the carpet, seats, dash and trunk. At the dealership under warranty we had dozens of full carpets to replace in 1992, a very popular 4dr car, with leather & supercharger (?&/@X) and this is exactly what it looks like, other than the hands full of bolts, screws, washers, plastic clips, etc. Of course it was the UAW workers getting $68.52 cents per hour w/free healthcare...Nice job dudes. Great job Pete and Minnie. Retired ASE Master Tech. Omaha!

Seam sealer of any type does not bond well to bare metal, the correct method is to use etching primer on the area to be sealed then when primer is dry apply the sealer.Look at new car production you will note that the body shells are primed prior to seam sealing, this method prevents the early onset of rust. Hope this helps you out.

I remember using seam sealer on a 1951 Jag. It was a lot of work hitting all the seams from piecing the whole car back together. Once all the seams where sealed up we rolled it into the paint booth and put primer on the car. The car later got a cheap glossy black top coat that looked okay for being the first time painting a car. The teacher still has the car at his shop and it still looks pretty good after 18 yr old ameture paint job.

Hi Pete, thank you very much for your helpful videos. ..few questions : 1) why you use seam sealer of two different branches ? 2) Should we repeat the same seam sealer application also on the opposite side to avoid water to go inside the gap in case the sealer did not penetrate completely ? In a video you mention to spray the body with epoxy sealer before painting the car. 3) Should seam sealer be applied before the application of this sealer ? Thank you !

I’ve had better luck pushing the gun for a uniform bead. Just my humble opinion. Love your videos and your “Old School “ ways of doing things. When I was younger and was doing body work as a amateur I spent tons of time at the library, talking to paint store owners. I remember R&M had body repair manuals along with my high school shop class. We’re talking 1970. You make it very easy for a person to at least do their own work. Also, I still have my Binks no. 7 and all my sanding boards from the 60s. I have that same sanding block you used in another video, think it’s 3M and it’s a reddish brown. Thanks for what you do.

Awesome video. Should I bother seam sealing my 1st gens drip rails? I'm planning on cleaning up my drip rails all the way from the top of my 1st gen Dodge so excluding where it starts going down the side of the cab as those parts are clean so I'd tape that off as there's only small patches of surface rust spread out from where the rail starts on both sides at the top all the way over above the windshield. Probably only about 2" up towards the vehicle of course when going around the roof as the majority of the roof is clean. Should I just stick with primer, color match, and clear? Or definitley seam seal? The rails are fairly clean I just want to make it surface rust proof and overall rust proof before it gets worse. I will just be using sandpaper by hand considering the shape the drip rail is.

sixtyfiveford make sure your seam sealer says direct to metal if you don’t have a layer of primer with a sanded “tooth” to it. Any paint supply worth their salt will have a product spec sheet that can come with the sealer.

So what I was wondering is is there another company that makes a different Dynatron that you use that I'm not aware of? I like to get the brand you say, I'm just a little perplexed by this. I just wanna make sure I got that exact sealer for my 84 4runner it's about ready for sealer.

I think Pete's referring to 3M's older product Drip Chek, which used to be all over body shops and is still available but barely still in use cause its older technology. 3M makes Dynatron as well.
