In this video I show you how to change the transmission fluid and filter in a 2005 Porsche Cayenne Turbo. I recommend changing the transmission fluid and filter every 60-70k miles to ensure a long service life. I was surprised how dirty the fluid was after only 75k miles.
Below are links to the parts and tools that I used in this video.
Transmission fluid: amzn.to/3rGebhu
OEM Transmission Filter: amzn.to/3MlGKbP
Aftermarket filter and transmission gasket: amzn.to/3K48qR4
Infrared Gun: amzn.to/3xEZBKZ
17mm allen for fill plug: amzn.to/3EzZSjx
T40 torx: amzn.to/36xhhwK
Ratcheting 10mm wrench: amzn.to/3JXeElv
Fluid pump: amzn.to/3KfR97H

You've saved me and a lot of people a lot of money, Dan! Thank you. Some missing pointers worth noting. It needs to be filled till it over flows. Then ran to temp of 90°C and filled running. Then shut down and cooled till thermostat closes at 40°C. Then quickly started and filled/topped off before thermostat opens again. You won't be changing it right until and unless you fill/test with cooler lines opened, followed by filling/testing after closing the cooler lines. Change quantity: 8.5L to 9.6L.

Very helpful video, sir. At 242k miles, I thought my transmission took a dump and the problem ended up being the CSB and the flex disk were pretty much dead. Figured I'd change the transmission fluid while I was there. I've changed fluid on automatic transmissions before without issue but it was quite nice to have a video specifically for my vehicle. With the new fluid, filter, CSB, and flexy boi, the car feels brand new again. Now it's time for an alignment and tires.

Thanks again for this video. I replaced the fluid on my Turbo S yesterday. I was able to get 5 quarts out and was only able to put in 5 quarts. The pump worked great. What I did during filling was put a clean pail under the fill hole so that any fluid that drips out will be deemed "clean" instead of being wasted. The tranny now shifts so smoothly. It used to be jerky from 3rd to 4th when not accelerating hard. Now, it's all good. Even the 1st-to-2nd and 2nd-to-3rd shifts feel so much smoother. Thanks again for your Cayenne videos. And thanks for the tip on the cheaper fluid where we don't have to pay some $58 for the plastic Porsche containers.

Thanks for making this video!! I wish someone would make a video to show changing the Cayenne transmission fluid lines and/or cooler. I need to see what sizes and direction the flow is because I'm interested in splicing in an aftermarket inline magnetic transmission filter. Can't hurt! Also installing a few extra strong tiny magnets to the inside of the pan in addition to the 4 there from the factory.

Very helpful but some details are confusing. How did your wife go through all the gears on a lift that has the car sit on the tires (from what I can tell)? Also: you first put about 4 quarts in, then driving through the gears while further filling until it oozes out - I get that. But did you end up refilling all the fluid (8-9 quarts) during this process? I didn't see it. What did you use to clean the magnets and to clean the oil pan? Thanks!

I own a 2011 Cayenne Base and I am thinking about doing this service myself. Is there a capacity chart that tells you how much it hold empty? If so I was thinking of buying another transmission pan, installing a barbed type of drain valve to thread into the place of the drain plug, use a vacuum pump to pump X amount of trans fluid into the pan and when enough fluid have been filled based off the capacity close the valve and leave it in place of the drain plug. Do you think this could work? It would definitely make for easy filling and draining if there was a open and shut valve in place.

so you keep adding fluid until it starts pouring out, then turn on the engine and cycle through the gears spending at least 4 seconds in each gear until the pan reaches 104 degrees. then keep filling the fluid until its pouring back out of the filler hole? i hope i got all the steps right, i just wanted to confirm i have it all right before i attempt this. how long will the car stay at 104 degrees usually? does it have to be exactly 104? if it starts to go over, do i just turn off the car to get the temp back down? do you use any sealant when reinstalling the gasket? sorry about all the questions, but it kinda daunting

Great Video Dan. When you are at the stage where you are filling the transmission and cycling through the gears, I assume you are keeping the brakes engaged so you didn't drive off your hoist. Are you then shifting the transmission using the tiptronic through all 6 forward gears as well as park, neutral and reverse? If you do this with the brakes engaged do you run any risk of stalling the motor in the higher drive gears, or does the torque converter keep you from locking things up with the engine. Just looking for a bit of clarity for when I do this on my Pepper. Do you need to rev the engine at all, or just keep it at idle while cycling through all the gears and waiting for the fluid to warm up.

@diydan when doing the final fill and running the gears, are you going between reverse and drive the entire time, or cycling through those gears a few times and then leaving it in park and waiting for the temp to rise? I've done the change, and my test drives would indicate I've either got too much fluid or too little, and I can't figure out which.
@DIYDanCars
@DIYDanCars 3 жыл бұрын
For the initial filing process I have my wife run through all of the gears(PNDR) until the transmission won't take anymore fluid. Once it won't take anymore fluid, it becomes a waiting game until the fluid reaches the desired temp. Fluid should star oozing out as you get closer to the desired temp. I thought I had explained all that in the video?
@gjkMN

@@DIYDanCars I should have been more clear, I was asking in the context of doing the fluid change alone; could I cycle the gears, put it in park, then go fill until it oozes out and finish from there? But, I did recruit my wife and tried a second time, doing it like you and having her cycle gears continually as I filled. My test drive is, again, resulting in a weird grinding noise. @@DIYDanCars coming back to report I figured out what happened, and it is not good. I didn't have a fluid pump on hand, so I made one out of a chemical sprayer that I had laying around. Of course I made sure to rinse it out very well to clean it of all past substances. Unfortunately, after draining my fluid and dropping the pan, it was apparent that there was some left over water in that pump that I didn't get out, because there was a thin foamy substance on the bottom of the pan, and a little in the transmission itself. It seems this is a pretty serious problem, any suggestions for a remedy? Do I need to have a shop flush it, am I in for a complete rebuild?

Hey I have an 06 cayenne turbo I’ve been told transmission fluid changes can amplify problems for bad transmissions my trouble is occasionally it shifts hard and shifts at a really high rpm almost redline but only when your flooring I’ve heard spark plugs can do this what do you think should I try a transmission fluid change I have 110k miles and no engine light and everything seems normal and Porsche says that you can do 155k miles on the transmission fluid any ideas?

I would start with a fluid change, but it sounds like you might have a bad valve body in the transmission. Unfortunately, this is another common Cayenne problem that is more prevalent in the 03 and 04 model years. Good luck!

Thanks for sharing your experience. It appears that you were able to drain about 2/3 of the fluid from the system. I assume getting the remaining 1/3 (about 4 quarts) of fluid from the cooler and torque converter would be a major process? I'm wondering if it's possible to hook up a compressed air line to either the return or suction line and "blow out" the remaining fluid?
@Paulo01111
@Paulo01111 3 жыл бұрын
just stumbled onto this from utube algorithm, so sorry if it's too late. You can drain all of it (ie flush it) by disconnecting the (return) fluid line from the cooler. Then just add more fluid until new fluid comes out of the hose. You'll end using about 12l of fluid in total.

I have been thinking of trading my Cayenne TT for a while due to poor downshift to 4th gear. I can't even sell it because of that. The rough downshift issues happen only in automatic mode, never manual, and only once the tranny is above 185F. I am gonna try this as instead of taking the $2000 trade-in offer from CarMax. I love the Cayenne TT acceleration and can't really part with it.

Have you thought about replacing the valve body? That should take care of your harsh shifting. RevMax makes a re-manufactured valve body for the Cayenne that has received a lot of good reviews from other enthusiasts. I heard the job isn't that hard to do either.

Hey guys please tell me if statement made by my mechanic that it’s best to leave the tranny fluid as it is if the fluid was never changed before. The car is a Cayenne 2008 Turbo with 230000kms on it. Shall I insist on tranny fluid change or not bother? I am afraid they will do it but blame it on me if the tranny behaves worse than before. There is back n forth knocking sometimes between 4th and 5th gear at moderate speeds and with 6th gear even at highway speeds. At 6th gear it happens only sometimes. Any comments and ideas welcome. Is this the same transmission as the PDK transmission in a 2010 Turbo Porsche Panamera? And is the procedure the same? Last question may be stupid: What stops the fluid from backing out of the fill hole while you're pumping it in the fill? Thanks.

No! This is not the same as a PDK transmission! The Porsche PDK transmissions use a totally different fluid and have a different fill process than my Cayenne Turbo.
