In this video I show you what steps I took in order to service the transfer case in my 2005 Porsche Cayenne Turbo. Believe it or not, changing the fluid in my transfer case is easier than performing an oil change.
The fluid pump I used can be purchase here. amzn.to/3vBQDeJ
Redline D4 ATF that I used can be purchased here: amzn.to/38Z8mFc

Sorry if I am being dim - is the transfer case the same as the centre differential? I have a 2003 VW Touareg and am changing the transfer case fluid and wondered if the locking centre differential is the same thing, or a different piece of hardware? Thanks.

Hi Dan, I’m really enjoying your videos particularly those on the Cayenne. I purchased a 2011 about a year ago and I love it. I’d really like to hear if you’ve had any problems with yours. I keep waiting for something to go wrong, but it just hasn’t happened yet. I haven’t had a single issue with mine. I did an oil/filter change myself and will probably do the transfer case after seeing how dirty your was. I’d like to see a video on the lift you have in your garage. Do you like it? Did you install it yourself? Where did you get it, cost, etc? Just an idea. Keep up the good work.

Thanks Mike! It's comments like these that keep me doing this. I hate seeing people getting ripped off for such basic services like this and hopefully my videos will inspire them to work on their cars. Some issues I have had are typical of a car that is almost 9 years old (when I got it), the other issues are from Porsche being a cheap skate on the materials. Cool expansion tank, coolant T's, plastic vacuum lines, coil packs (21th revision really??), coolant vent tube, wiper motor, water pump, tensioner pulleys, idler pulleys, rear hatch struts, valve cover gaskets, cracked Y pipe intake manifold, and intercooler seals all done by 62k miles. I think that pretty much sums it up so far. ;) I'm pretty anal when it comes to service and i'm sure a lot of mechanics would of said you don't need to do that right now but that's not me. Don't get me wrong I really love this SUV, however I miss the good ol days of premium materials under the hood, like metal. I bought my red 944 Turbo and my Cayenne Turbo around the same time...guess which one has been more reliable? Yep, the 944 turbo. lol! Porsche isn't the only one using so much plastic under the hood either, I guess it's the times we live in now as cars become labeled as throw aways. I had the lift installed by the dealer. I wanted to make sure that if anything happened with the lift while I was under there, my wife would have some type of recourse. So far I love my Direct Lift and its been the single best investment for the garage yet. The lift set me back around $3200 installed. Take easy Mike! Dan

Thank you for the video, truly helpful. Where can you find the spec sheet that you show at the beginning . I have a 2010 cayenne and wanted to make sure I am putting in the right fluids. In your transmission flush video you used toyota fluid would you use toyota fluid for both?
@DIYDanCars

No problem! That spec sheet is from the shop manual. I would not use Toyota fluid in the transfer case. I used Redline D4 fluid to fill my transfer case and have had no problems. The fluid I used can be found by clicking on the link in the description or by clicking on the link I pinned.

Can you overfill the case? Or does the drain plug location keep that from happening. Thanks - great video Dan
@DIYDanCars
@DIYDanCars 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Phil, the fill plug located at the top should prevent somebody from over filling the differential. However, i'm sure over filling can be done if somebody was really negligent during the filling procedure. If you follow my video you will be fine. Happy wrenching!

No problem! I would also change the fluid in both differentials. If you haven't changed the transmission fluid yet, now would be a good time to drop the pan, change the filter, and fill it with fresh fluid.

Question: When it comes to changing the front & rear diff and transfer case fluids, what do you think about the idea of driving the car around for a few miles then doing a second fluid change? The thought here is that you'd slosh the new fluid around the internal components that still have old fluid and dirt stuck to them thus "washing them" off better than a stationary drain ever would. Then, you drain the slightly dirty fluid while that dirt is suspended and able to come out. Fill with new fluid and voilá! Yes, you'd have to maybe buy another bottle of product and it would take a bit longer, but maybe the ultimate way to go, no? And, of course, you'd not put the plastic aero belly pans on until the second drain was done!

Redline D4 meets Porsche's "Esso LT 71141" transfer case fluid requirement, but always use what you feel comfortable with. Color has no bearing on the performance of an oil. The fluid is dyed whatever color the manufacture chooses.

You did notice the 14" long ratchet/breaker bar I was using at first, right? The fill plug is made out of soft aluminum and was starting to strip. Porsche uses a thread locker that needs heat in order to deactivate. Without using heat you run the risk of stripping out the fill plug (which I almost did). However, do what you feel comfortable with on your car. I think my video illustrates how helpful adding heat in a situation like this can be.

Gotta agree. Also reduce the risk or damaging/stripping the head of the bolt. Great videos! I know the Touareg isn't the same but it gives me a good starting point!

You're wrong! The transfer case calls for a "Esso LT71141" specification fluid and Mobil 3309 does not meet this specification. Redline D4 does meet Esso LT71141 specification and is safe to use in the transfer case, but feel free to use what you feel comfortable with.
