BEFORE you paint upholstery and fabric with Chalk Paint, watch this video! Learn the process and what to avoid when selecting an upholstered piece of furniture to paint. Plus, answers to Chalk Painting upholstery FAQ’s.
Leave your questions in the comments below!
In this video, Deanna used Chalk Paint by Annie Sloan to paint the fabric on a mid century modern slipper chair. It is upholstered with a textured fabric called frieze*. Using the same paint, she also paints the wood legs that have been previously stained dark brown. All with no sanding, no priming, no prep work!
Watch to the end of the video to hear her honest review of the process and results.

I tried painting a chair, and it looks beautiful, but its so "crunchy" that no one will sit on it. What did I do wrong? And more importantly - is there anything I can do to save it? But that's just my story...yours turned out great! good video, too.
@chiron591

Margaret Colasont rub it with a paper bag or a fine sanding sponge. Takes the crunch out. Vacuuming after to get rid of dust.

Margaret Colasont lightly sanding like chiron591 suggested can help to soften, great tip!! Just be careful not to sand through your paint! As far as what might have gone wrong, in my experience the more you sit in the chair it will start to soften up, however, too many layers of paint or not enough water can create a “crunchy” texture just like the chair in this video.

Lol, I haven't tried painting upholstery fabric before, but I HAVE painted fabric....I repaint forgotten dolls, more into creepy dolls, lol, and I needed to make one of the clown outfits my dolls was wearing to not be so right and airy, hahaa! So, I just painted it over on one side with black chalk paint and even though the coverage was great, the fabric was VERY stiff. It was fine bc it's a display doll, but I am thinking maybe if I had wet the fabric, it wouldn't have been AS stiff. Next time I need the same outfit but dulled down, I'll def try wetting it first and water down the paint a bit! Thanks so much for this!

Hi Deanna: I painted a thrifted wing chair in French Linen years ago, and waxed it. The wood legs were dark brown, so I painted them with Provence, Florence and a bit of Aubusson, and distressed them showing more of the original brown, and used silver leafing for a metallic edge. Annie Sloan is absolutely the best and you are too. Nice tutorial and a lot of information. Thanks for a clear, concise presentation.

We recently bought a used RV. I want to change the outdated gold/velvet on the dinette bench area. Since it's too much work to take the entire thing out, the chalk paint appears to be a fine solution although it will definitely take longer. Your presentation and sweet smile made this as easy to follow as any video I've seen. The review was extra helpful as well. You're a wonderful & knowledgable professional. Keep up your great work and thank you Deanna.

Hi Bonnie, Good luck with your RV dinette cushions! Sounds like a large project but lots of people have done entire sofas before so its doable, just may take longer like you said. If you can flip a cushion over you can start with a test patch to see how well it covers, get a feel for the process and decided if you like the results. I didn't apply clear wax in this video because it's not the best option for very textured fabrics, however, on fabrics that have less texture I like to apply the clear wax after the paint has dried. The clear wax seals the paint and gives a leathery feel. I'm glad you found this video helpful and I appreciate your kind feedback :)

All the lessons you mentioned were the same for me and now I know how to scout for undamaged fabric, choose tight smooth fabric not like this with the large pile, and use darker paint than the original fabric- first hand. I've never used chalk paint before but may look into it now that I've seen this video. Thanks for a wonderful lesson. Will be following you for more advice. @DIYDEANNA
@DIYDEANNA 4 жыл бұрын
I'm glad you found this video! Chalk Paint is a fun and easy to use paint! It's primarily used to paint furniture (dressers, tables, accessories, even walls!) There is little to no prep work before you start and so many possibilities when it comes to the look you want to achieve. I have painted a canvas drop cloth before, I even used a stencil to create a fun pattern. It worked great... the only difference is I used this inside as a throw rug. I love the idea as a canopy over a deck but I'm not sure if the paint would hold up in all the elements. I have successfully died fabric with chalk paint (watch this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/f6qWeomEn7hol9k ) and it has held up in the washing machine. Because I haven't done exactly this idea I can't tell you what the long term results will be, you might get a little colour bleeding or fading over time? I'd suggest a test piece: cut a piece of drop cloth and paint it how you plan on painting the actual canopy. Avoid making your paint too thick, if it's really thick on the surface it may just flake off. Let it sit for a couple days to dry. Iron on warm setting, the heat helps to set the colour. Then throw the sample piece in the washing machine and see how it holds up. I'd love to hear how it goes, please let me know if you end up doing the project!

I have painted various fabric chairs and sofas…I painted a cotton flat fabric love seat that had a white background with light blue pinstripes. The fabric only had the pinstripes printed on the top and the underneath fabric was plain white. I thought this would be easy to paint over….nope! 5 coat and 3-4 days -And you can still see the printed blue pin stripes. I don’t skip steps as I am ocd! What I realized is that a lot of fabric furniture that you purchase new or used is scotch guarded (water repellent) to protect against pet stains and kids. This is why people including myself are struggling with getting the fabric to take the paint. After much trial and error this is a simple test that I’ve come up with; 1.) spray a small area of your fabric w/water. If it beads up or sets on top of the surface it has been scotch guarded or protected with a similar chemical. 2.) if you have painted wood furniture -you know that scuff sanding gives better results as it helps with paint adhesion … so lightly scuff sand the scotch guard off IF your water beads up on surface when you test it on a small area. (Prep work is everything just like cleaning a old dresser with TSP and rinsing the residue off.) I know this seem like more of a process but it will save you a lot of time, paint and money. I have learned this through trial and error. Hopefully these two simple tips will save someone from the Headaches & frustration of your paint not covering.

I was thinking of painting my dining chairs but after seeing this I think reupholstering would be a lot less work, plus prettier! I can easily remove the chair pad and the way my chairs are made is very different than most but It has a fabric covered panel on the front and one on back that I think I could remove, if not cut to fit then pull up edges then add fabric and glue back down. Have you ever tried the spray fabric paint? Just wondering how that works. If so many layers didnt have to be done this would not be a bad way to go especially since you could match paint with wall color!
@epavek
@epavek Жыл бұрын
I have used the spray fabric paint. It end up being very expensive. I did a chair with a small ottoman and used 6 cans. The fabric really absorbs the paint which is why you use so many cans.

Your explanation is so good! I'm really glad I came across this video, just 15 minutes ago I didn't even know that painting upholstery is possible!! I have a follow-up question though: I want to paint my bright red armchair in a dark emerald green. Should I use one or two layers of white (or a different lighter colour?) in between or can I just gor for the green right away?

I didn't knew I have to wet the couch before painting n I tried once n a little spot n it felt so hard n like it was gonna crack, that I got scared n never painted it! Lol I been trying to fix my vintage sofas, but it's so expensive n I refuse to buy new ones lol With your explanation I feel more confident to try it n since they are like dark beige, it shouldn't be hard to cover them with a darker beige!😉

I like you and your show, I am type of person the I need step by step instructions. You take your time to explain things. I love it thank you very much. Do you have videos to paint piece furniture and applying a transfer. My question is applying the transfer and using clear coat for seal and wax. I get mess up on those two things
@DIYDEANNA
@DIYDEANNA 4 жыл бұрын
I do have a video about applying a transfer, I'll leave a link below! In my video I did not put a sealer on the transfer because it wasn't a high use piece so I wasn't too concerned about it getting worn off. I also don't mind on this piece if it wears away a little and looks more distressed. If you want to make your transfer more durable then yes you should apply a sealer. You can use either a clear coat or wax on transfers, I have used both. Since the wax is usually rubbed on you have to be careful not to rub too hard or you can rub off your transfer. I suggest looking at the instructions on the transfer package, they usually tell you what is recommended for that brand. Glad you are enjoying my videos, here's the one about how to apply a transfer. Thanks for this...I had my doubts that this painting fabric technique on this fabric was going to work and I also knew ...this ones going to be tough...OK I dont think this was a good result...and others below have said they would have simply recovered the chair with fresh fabric ..100% so would I have done too... but the point you are doing is "testing out" a technique that is an option to re upholstery I get it and its an honest review... It could have been amazing but...the pointers were there... The type of fabric and the fact it was worn so badly should have told you... But; Thank you for showing us.... Mallorca. Spain.

Hi! Thanks for watching from Spain!!! Glad you get the point of the video, I am happy I did this test. Awesome thorough video, thank you! Would I be insane to attempt a whole loveseat with this technique? It has some kind of soft, low pile synthetic fabric which sounds like it may be an ideal choice for painting, but the cushions are deep and soft which seems like it could take forever to paint (and require lots of paint too)...the original color is a bold medium red and I would like it to be a caramel brown or tan color if possible, but have you done or seen any red upholstery successfully painted? I’m also wondering if I could modify the technique by using the watered down paint in a spray bottle and working it in with a brush, and also removing the cushion covers and submerging them in the paint solution, similar to how you’d dye fabric. Any suggestions would be so appreciated! Thanks again for your great video and channel!!

It was very interesting to watch. I've been wanting to try chalk paint on fabric. It does seem that given the high cost of Annie Sloane paint and the labor intensive nature of the fabric on this particular chair I would have chosen to reupholster the very basic top and bottom of the chair especially since the fabric had some wear.. It appears it would have been just basically a staple job after disassembling the chair. Using a whole can of very pricey paint would have been upsetting to me.

maureen howland thanks for watching. I agree with what you are saying. I’m glad I made this video so I could teach others the process but also what to look for and avoid ie: worn fabric, synthetic fabric, trying to hide a mid or dark colour with white etc. I will be posting a video soon where I demonstrate on a smooth fabric, more of an ideal situation. Stay tuned!

Although I'm demonstrating with one colour in these videos you can layer colours one on top of each other and paint patterns or sections different colours to get the boho look you love.
