Today we share how to properly cut and prepare your house wrap to install a new window. This is our preferred method and is superior to the X-cut and I-cut methods. An important part of a successful home renovation or build is having a basic understanding of how the different home systems work.

So there's no spray foam? I'm genuinely asking..hahaha..not setting you up for attack..haha..I saw you illustrate how the foam causing the house wrap to pull away and I saw it there...I saw you caulk the flange of the window but I didn't see anymore use of foam..Is that only used when you do trim work? This is so interesting..I just subscribed to watch the motherload. :)

Great job guys !!! Some people can't or won't accept change which is pretty amazing given that we live in the age of technology and things change daily. Change brought us indoor plumbing and running water. As well as defeating disease with water purification and medicine. So how can we not accept change. What's inspiring here is that u took the extra time to show why a new way was better to help improve the outcome for others. U didn't have to do that. I found this channel looking to help some friends with a bathroom floor in their mobile. Watched many then OITC. I discovered we could do the task properly, simply and without cutting corners. I know u have already researched and watched tons of videos which is why I'm comfortable following ur direction. To do a project properly and feel good about it IS the inspiration. Many thanks to Doug, Ashley and family.

Seems every time we turn around they invent a different way of doing things. I am not suprised. I often wondered why they did it the x way. I did it like he did on our home back before I even knew about it. I didn't work for a contractor eather. I did it the way I thought it made sence to me.

Haha - nobody is going to stop questioning. This is the nature of absolutely any DIY videos on KZbin. Woodworking videos: "You're being super unsafe! You're going to cut your fingers off!" Welding videos: "Your welds look terrible! You obviously don't know how to set your machine up!" Home renovation videos: "I know a better way! You're dumb!" It's never going to stop, no matter how much the video demonstrates the right ways to do things.

Doug, You said in previous videos it was better to cut the wrap the way you were doing it & when you showed us how you taped it, that was good enough for me. Sometimes you tell us this might not be the right way, but this is how I want to do it because it is behind a door. I started watching your videos when I recognized my wife and I nearly 50 years ago. I would tackle almost any job mostly for the fun of doing it. My wife stopped being amazed a long time ago. I was a medical technologist for over 50 years. When we would get a new piece of lab equipment I would come in in the evening and sit down with the manuals and slowly dissect it to see how it worked. Keep doing what you are doing. YOU ARE DOING GREAT. (it's also neat to see your wife doesn't mind getting her hands dirty)

LOL I saw your window install last time, then saw someone else on another channel install windows with a modified x cut, and I thought, "Well, that doesn't look right." LOL. Very good explanation. Hoping I never have to do it myself, but I enjoy watching you work.

Me too... I think it's because Doug and Ashley don't talk to us like we are ignorant, they are very informative and kind at the same time. This is the only channel I watch that keeps my interest on stuff like this.

Me too! I’m a retired nurse. Husband died a few years ago and I sold our home to downsize. The new one needed a lot of repairs. I’m remodeling it myself. It’s amazing what a person can do when they just get started and don’t quit. I’ve learned so much from this channel. Love Doug and Ashley. Respect 😊

Everything you just said sets people up for failure , once you stop listening to peoples idea's or methods for doing similar things you stop learning or create problems for yourself . Critique is exactly how codes and building science were created in the first place .

Great video. It is a shame you have to explain in great detail why you do what you do to your house. All your work seems very professional and well thought out to me. I just wish I had your energy.

The naysayers sometimes need to realize that the way things are done are always changing and improving. Just doing it a certain way because you always have done it that way is foolish. Thank you Doug and Ashley for teaching us new things. That's how we grow. God bless you in your endeavors.

I think people should mind their own business when it comes to the "how to." It's your guys house, do what you believe is the right way. It's your house, time, money, and effort. Keep up the good work.

Work smarter, not harder....agreed. Totally. AND use common sense. It just makes sense that you wouldn't want something that is supposed to repel water to create an actual water issue for your windows, the frame, and the wood surrounding it. Great job!

Inspectors have always had a terrible time getting people to flash windows correctly. Flashing goes on the bottom first, then the window... the sides next, on top of the window frame/flange, extending over the bottom flashing. The top last, on top of the window fin, the side flashing, and under the house wrap. It's not new, it's just finally getting through to builders. I was doing this in the 80s. The material was a little different, but the system was the same. Along the way, someone got the idea that doing that X thing was cool, and made other people feel they were doing it wrong if they complied with the required 'layering' requirements for windows. Thank you, so much, for showing this in detail. You're going to save a lot of people from air and water intrusion, rot, etc. So well done.
