On my project, the waterproofing consultant is always beating me up about running seam tape over the cap nails, and not weather lapping the tape intersections properly. I observed both of these install issues in this video.
@WeatherizationPartners
@WeatherizationPartners 5 жыл бұрын
Cyrus, thanks for the response. Running seam tape over the caps is not needed and the consultant would need be updated. A simple solution is to reach out to your local Tyvek Specialist and they could consultant with your waterproofer and provide any necessary materials: bit.ly/2OZTJqz. The weather lapping of the tape is “splitting hairs” but we get why some may request that. Your local rep can help there as well.

A friend of mine is a builder here around Chattanooga and he thinks I’m crazy when I say something about how your air barrier needs to be continuous. Nobody around here tapes any seams. Heck, they don’t even put the housewrap over the top flangers of the windows.

Does it matter which side faces out or can I install with words upside down
@WeatherizationPartners
@WeatherizationPartners 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Charlie, as long as it's Tyvek it doesn't matter if the words are upside down or inside out. So, the short answer, it doesn't matter. The long answer, the material is a nonwoven, nonperforated sheet with high-density polyethylene fibers that are fused together to form a strong, uniform web. DuPont™ Tyvek® HomeWrap® is the only product manufactured using this unique process.

Thanks for this clear presentation. What is the best way to fasten the HomeWrap to a layer of 1.5" rigid insulation to be installed outside the OSB sheathing (with lap siding to follow)? Tape? Capped nails into studs?

no one ever answers my question so please answer... i dont understand putting so many holes in tyvek? when you put the tyvek up you use tape and are very careful... why then is it ok to fill it with holes when putting siding up? i am not talking about you specifically i mean when ever i see some one put up tyvek and siding. the question is why fill tyvek with holes? is it ok
@WeatherizationPartners
@WeatherizationPartners 7 жыл бұрын
Colin, thanks for your comment. No matter what weather barrier is used secondary fasteners for cladding puncture them. It's the reality of construction. With Tyvek installation we recommend proper 6" overlap of the material to create a good drainage plane for any moisture that may get behind the cladding. Secondary fasteners will most likely not be the major concern for water intrusion. Here's a link if you would like to reference DuPont installation guidelines: www.dupont.com/products-and-services/construction-materials/building-envelope-systems/articles/how-to-install.html?src=partner_install
@artdeco18
@artdeco18 7 жыл бұрын
the simple answer is that the holes are sealed. He's using cap nails that have a plastic cap between the nail head and tyvek. if you go to the dupont website, it is the recommended fastening system.
@abitacat
@abitacat 6 жыл бұрын
I agree with using minimum number of fasteners to secure the wrap...the dozens of nails holding the siding will surely keep it in place....unless along delay time between wrap and siding...
@robertfranks3828
@robertfranks3828 6 жыл бұрын
I agree with Colin its the dumbest thing in the world.. you spend so much time and money to make sure this stuff goes on perfect. then ruin it with siding... i think the reality is some code requirements are so stupid.

I am using Tyvek Commercial wrap on my project and the modern day reality is that Building wrap has become an inferior product to protect against draft and the elements. Other more expensive products that have begun replacing Tyvek commercial/home wrap are products such as liquid applied and peel and stick asphalt membrane WRB's. These newer systems are self healing; so that when you fasten in a brick tie or shoot in a siding nail the material mends around that penetration. It's called a (weather Resistive Barrier) for a reason, not Weather Proof.

how far past the bottom of the house should the wrap be? should it extend a certain amount below the bottom of the mudsill or be flush to the bottom?
@WeatherizationPartners
@WeatherizationPartners 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment. Per the DuPont Install guide it is recommended to have the bottom of the roll extend at least 1" over the sill plate (2" or greater is best practice).

Aren't you supposed to line up the caps with the studs? It seems like the installer is just worried about the spacing to support the tyvek and not getting the caps into the studs
@WeatherizationPartners
@WeatherizationPartners 2 жыл бұрын
Hey John, thanks for your comment. The Cap Stapler length is enough to go into the OSB that is covering the studs and no further. If the Tyvek was to be applied directly to the studs with no sheathing in the back, then, definitely want to make sure the cap fasteners will go directly into the studs. You can learn more about the tool he is using by visiting StingerWorld.com.

Can I use a regular staple gun?
@WeatherizationPartners

If staples without caps are used we recommend covering the staple with a piece of Tyvek® Tape. If you are not concerned about warranty it can be done but it is not recommended in the DuPont installation guide.

If I am installing house wrap prior to hardie 5/16 cement siding do you use staples for the house wrap or cap staples
@WeatherizationPartners
@WeatherizationPartners 5 жыл бұрын
Barry, best practice calls for cap staples. DuPont prefers staples to be used as temporary fasteners. Details here on page 20: www.dupont.com/content/dam/dupont/products-and-services/construction-materials/building-envelope-systems/documents/K16282-Residential-WRB-Install.pdf

is there a R value to this product or is is for moisture mostly
@WeatherizationPartners
@WeatherizationPartners 8 жыл бұрын
+LTDanno360 DuPont™ Tyvek® HomeWrap® will protect the insulation's R value of the wall system but the physical material acts to prevent air and water infiltration and contains no actual R value within the product material. DuPont does makes a product that contains R values. That product is Tyvek THERMAWRAP R5 (Info here: bit.ly/1lnSnTu). Further details on HomeWrap here: bit.ly/HomeWrap

Anything that is a barrier has an "R" value of 1 and the dead air space created by that barrier also has an "R" value of 1. This wrap installation is tight against the sheathing so it only adds an "R" value of 1 min and 2 max. For heat loss calculations I would give it a 1.5 to split the difference.

No where does anyone actually come out and say "lettering must go out" .. Not even the manufacturer instructions. I am assuming it must have the lettering out to work. Can you confirm my thoughts.
@WeatherizationPartners
@WeatherizationPartners 5 жыл бұрын
Mike, thanks for your question. DuPont™ Tyvek® is equally effective in both directions and the logo may be on the inside or outside. However, Tyvek® StuccoWrap® and Tyvek® DrainWrap™ have a specially engineered surface that should be placed with the grooves facing outwards in a vertical direction. Other microporous or perforated wraps have to installed with the lettering out as they have a coating only on that surface. Tyvek is a unique building material.
@AceDublB
@AceDublB 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you for clarifying that Tyvek lettering can go on the inside against the wall. I am doing a cottage shed and don’t intend on adding vinyl siding so prefer a uniform white colour on the exterior to give more of a ‘finished’ look.

I posted the original comment several years ago, since then I have come to the conclusion that Tyvek is designed to act as a liquid water shed on either side and allows vapor to pass in either direction, that would be determined by the which higher or lower concentration of moisture. In other words it works either way. As the manufacturer stated, it is a specially designed material that allow vapor through not water and works in either direction. @@ninatrabona4629
