Few tips from a former autobody painter for years, More hardener will make the final product more brittle and subject to chipping, slightly less will cause it to be more resilient. You should follow up this video in 1 and 2 years as that is when the lifecycle of the finish will be much more evident. Adding heat after the curing process gets going it can cause solvent bubbles to form under the surface. This is because curing happens from the top down and solvents take ages to fully vent. If this happens there is nothing you can do but start over completely. Last tip I'll add, when mixing the epoxy, mix it in one container, transfer it to another container and mix a bit more. That ensures you do not have any pockets of unmixed parts.

If the surface is still soft to the touch, you will get a chemical bond when you reapply a second coat. If it isn't soft it will need a mechanical bond to adhere. 'fine grit sandpaper' is 600+ usually 800. when reapplying a second coat your extremely subject to solvent bubbles forming under heat. Alternatively, spraying them with a cheap primer gun will make a huge difference, but it is a big step. The pink Chinese spray gun from harbor freight here in the US is good for this kind of application.

One of those silicone baking sheets is a godsend when working with any kind of resin. Any drips or spills on it just peel away once cured, exactly as if you were making candy on it. A cheap kitchen scale makes getting the resin mixed perfectly equally. Just put the mixing cup on the scale, zero it, add part A, zero it, add part B, done.

Hey, I just heard about James and I want to say that I am praying for you, James and your whole family. I have been through a ton surgeries and the thing that helped me the most was keeping the thing Iced. You are probably already doing that but I had to offer it up. Again warm blessings to you and your family and especially for James. I love your vids and the way you teach but more important in this world is your family. Take care of them!

1. Blue tape would work to hold resin on top of the pedal. 2. Hot air gun works great for getting bubbles out.
@RegularFeelings9 ай бұрын
A couple tips: 1. Use a small medicine cup (like the ones that come with cough syrup) to measure your resin. 2. Use a heat gun/hair dryer to level the resin and remove bubbles. This will ameliorate little dimples that happen when the bubbles rise as the resin cures. 3. A heat gun can also replace the toothpick. Simply pour and then hit the resin with the heat gun. It will spread more quickly and give you more control over the medium.

Have you tried using the epoxy method over a water slide decal instead of paint?

Have you tried putting masking tape around the edge leaving it 1 to 2 cm above this will cut out fiddling with a toothpick.

I was hoping to see a demonstration when the tape gets removed from the holes. I assume you drill the epoxi resin?
@axedoc20104 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the video! Do you use the drill bit again to drill the holes through the epoxy or can you cut into it with a blade or something? And if you drill again is there any risk of the finish cracking?
@stevm01235 жыл бұрын
Hey Paul, thanks for this! I just did my first one and came out great. I pre-taped my drill holes from the inside, just wondering if you had any tips for drilling out the epoxy that's filled these holes afterwards - any safety concerns?

Is it possible to sand the resin if it does not spread perfectly on a flat surface but with slight concavities ?
@ehafh7 жыл бұрын
a digital postage scale can be good to weigh out your mixtures.
@UpcycleElectronics7 жыл бұрын
ehafh This is not always the case. The product to be mixed must specify it can be mixed by weight. The harder most likey contains the solvents, a small amount if silicon for preventing fisheyes, and an accelerator. The epoxy resin is mostly polymers with a small amount of solvents with binders so it doesn't separate and form solids in the container. It all depends on the formula and what compromises were made to make it more user friendly. The professional stuff uses separate solvents to control their evaporation rate in different conditions, a few separate hardener speeds to control several different properties from lifecycle/durability to film thickness/surface leveling, and lamination adhesion, then there are several other optional additives like fisheye removers, accelerators, and specific solvents to alter the spray viscosity. The weights of these components are not equal. This is why they are usually specified by volume, and why pros use clear ratio mixing cups all the time. That said, no pro epoxy that I've ever seen is mixed 1:1, so there is a small chance they weigh the same.
@volcomstoned8766 жыл бұрын
There’s also an order to adding them together as well, also you may want to consider two spoons, the one spoon will give you less as of the second product as it ends up coated completely by the first. Two cups as well to ensure it’s actually mixed with no pockets of unmixed stuff and your good. Should look like milk almost when your finished mixing for 5-7mins If you do use tape to ensure to mess on the sides then be sure to pull the tape off no earlier then 3:30 no later then 4:30 hours after application

Hi, i am trying to made a footswitch for my amp an "peavey envoy 110". At the back of amp there is a input for a jack for the remote control. i had try to insert a jack with a buttom but the only result that i have, is that there is a reduction of amp noise and not the switch from distorsion of amp at the clean sound. Where i wrong? thanks

Hi, do you have any Facebook page? I'm going to use this tutorial, but I will modify it a little and I would like to ask you what you will think about it. First I will drill the holes, then paint. After that I'm going to print a label and stick it on the front. After that I want to use epoxy. The holes will be covered by label. At the end I will cut the holes in epoxy using Dremel. I just wonder if it would be fine.

Hi there, love your channel, thank you for sharing your wealth of knowledge, you've inspired me to build my first pedal (which I'm doing in the morning!). Anyway just thinking out loud here because I don't have any experience with this, but what if you poured the mixture into the plate and then dipped the enclosure face down? Again don't know if it'd work, but if it did you could potentially prepare a larger batch of the mixture, pour it into a tray or something and then coat several pedals very quickly and all in one go.

Hard to believe you dont have a hair dryer, heat gun. Even a soldering iron should work if you slowly scan the top. All these seem safer and easier then a lighter.
