This is still one of the best DIY Hanging Garage Shelve video. I used this to build my garage shelving about 4 years ago. In hindsight, 2x4 wood was overkill. I saw your other video using the metal pipes and I like it. I've recently moved to a new house and have a bigger garage with higher ceilings. I again will use something similar to buld mine. Thank you for the great videos over the years!!

Thanks for sharing this video. I'm working on a similar project, and this showed up in my feed. I did basically the same thing, but mine is 8' tall, 16' wide, and 30"deep (4 shelves). It's designed to accommodate totes. I completely built out the frames on the floor and used load straps as a make-shift pully system to hoist the shelves into place. I'm using 19/32 OSB for shelf material. I used mostly scrap 2x4s for the 24" on center supports. Other than the supports, making cuts was minimal because I used 16' and 8' 2x4s. I'll rip the OSB and use the remaining for other 18" shelves. Yours looks very nice and sturdy. Because mine is so wide, I'm adding toggle bolts to the back side for added strength. I might do a couple of your hanging shelves as well.

On my last garage that had 10ish foot ceilings, I built shelves/racks for all my extra lumber and sheets of plywood. Saved a ton of space. The plywood was good for me because all i had was extra osb, but if you had different kinds of plywood, then getting to the lower sheets would be difficult. As for stick lumber, it was perfect because I kept them sorted by size.

I like the preparation of measuring and pre-drilling the holes on all the pieces - some relative to the ceiling joists/truces and some relative to the wall studs, some to the frame of the rack. Then pre-installing the right screws/lag bolts in the right places. Pre-assembling what makes sense in each case. Very simple and efficient. Nicely done!

Very nice. Thank you for sharing! If high torque and stripping screw head is a concern, could consider using socket-drive hex head bolts instead. To avoid the hex head sticking out from the 2x4, can drill a slightly wider hole to recess the hex head. Doing so also allow you to drive a much longer & beefier bolt through the shelf’s base frame. Even if you put really heavy stuff on the shelf, don’t need to worry about over loading the screws.

Thank you for the tips!

@@DIYHomesteadProjectsDIYHP10 Not at all. Glad to be of help. 😎 Thank you for sharing your tips. I came across this same problem when tackling "how to anchor firearm cabinet to wall stud", specifically against burglars crow bar attack. After a lot of search, high-torque socket-driven bolt was the only thing that appeared strong enough. Buried it 3" into the wall stud. The additional length to account for dry wall, space-block, the cabinet thickness, and a massive washer, made the final bolt length (4.5") look humongous. Something that massive, need to pre-drill the wall stud, so don't risk splitting the stud itself. I have that project video on my channel if you're interested.

Smart leaving the front 2x4 off until mounted, dropping the weight by about 1/3. I would suggest filling an area (taking the shelf the rest of the way to the window and overhanging all the width to the edge of the garage door opening) because you will want the space sooner or later anyway. I would also recommend more head clearance than 6'1". I have a little concern with how it is tied into the ceiling. I like to bolt a single drop into the ceiling joists and the front shelf support board. To get joist access, I cut out a small square in the ceiling drywall, then use molding to frame it back in like an attic access panel and let the drywall rest on the molding. This also has an advantage of needing fewer drops from the ceiling.

I absolutely love this video out of all that I seen because it's so practical when you're working by yourself. My question is would a ledger board have made things easier when installing the first part of the shelves against the wall? When I hang cabinets I usually attach a ledger board to the wall and sit the cabinets on there when I'm working by myself
@DIYHomesteadProjectsDIYHP10 Жыл бұрын
A ledger board would have made it easier for sure. I was trying not to put extra holes into the drywall so I opted to do it this way for that reason only.

A small amount of liquid dish soap on the long wood screws makes them much easier to drive in and the soap dries and disappears. Just makes it easier than stripping the screw head in some cases. Many driver bits are worn.

Good clip. Nice Job. In Canada, where I live, we prefer screws with a Robertson head. A Robertson bit in a cordless drill for instance secures the Robertson screw on the bit so it doesn’t fall off when you go to drive it. You’re not required to use one hand to hold the screw and another to hold the driver. The screw stays put on the bit. WAAAAAAAAY easier than those annoying Phillips heads. And the Phillips heads strip out too easily. Due to the huge American market, most packaged items containing screws that we buy in Canada come with Phillips screws. They go straight to the trash bin and I sub them out with Robertsons. Makes like easy. You can blame Henry Ford for the fact that Americans use Phillips screws. But that’s another story.
@DIYHomesteadProjectsDIYHP104 жыл бұрын
I couldn't agree with you more. Sometimes my thriftiness gets the best of me and I cave and get phillips head screws. I usually regret that decision when I'm working on the project. My last project I used only Robertson head screws and I didn't regret it one bit.
