I think most of us with mobility issues have already installed a quick hitch on our tractors. The extra length the adapter adds will make up for that extra length the quick hitch adds.

On the older tractors you need something called an "overriding clutch" which is like your pto extender, but has a ratchet system built in. This is used for implements such as brush hogs that can on some of the older tractors actually push the tractor through the pto shaft as the implement winds down. The overriding clutch simply freewheels when that happens. Seems like this would be a much cheaper solution. (It's only about $85 at Tractor Supply at the moment.) You can line up the splines simply be rotating the clutch in the direction that allows it to freewheel. Yes, you still have to grease the splines, so you run the risk of getting grease on your hands and clothing. In my experience that is the least of your worries with respect to getting grease on your hands when attaching a PTO shaft. Maybe I don't swap out my implements with a pto enough to make it a frustration factor, but I've always found that the easiest part of attaching a 3 point implement... Takes about 5 seconds.
@DIYMyWay
@DIYMyWay 3 жыл бұрын
I’ve always heard it called an overrunning clutch, but you make a good point that it would give you the play you need to easily line up the splines. Thanks for watching!

@09:53 the plastic PTO shaft cover should be secured so it does not spin. The covers make it very hard to grease the u-joints or work the connectors on either end. I hate the damn things. When they wear out I do not replace them. I have a rule, I never do anything with the PTO shaft when the tractor is running. That is all the safety I need. Also, I noticed that my big tractor, a JD 5085 does not have that stupid shroud that hangs on the back of the tractor over the PTO output. My JD 4300 had one until I ripped it off one day in a fit of frustration.

Two safety suggestions. The pto plastic shroud has a chain to clip to implement so shroud does not spin while shaft inside does. Also, the chipper is supposed to be on the ground while chipping, not held in the air by 3point assembly. Great video, thanks for sharing.

Hi Stephen! Bending over is rough on my back too, so the less time I have to wrestle with the PTO connection, the better. I think if PTO shafts had better designed slip collars that were easier to operate, there wouldn't be near as much need for products like PTO-Connect. Thanks for watching!

So if the PTO had more clearance say 0.010" between the splines ie play it would be the same principle a little freewheel, dia. would still be the same so as to run true. That was quite a lot of movement to help engagement, wonder how acceleration and deceleration affects coupler. Unit did look very well made, but in dirty farm environment kinda sceptical ?

Hi Bryant! If you mean taking the PTO shaft off of and implement, no I don’t have a video on that. It attaches with the shear bolt and the protective shroud on the brush hob gear box makes it difficult. Thanks for watching!

@@DIYMyWay Good morning Sir, I kind of agree since you are into a warm environment that noting will freeze and you keep your PTO shaft very clean too. That is very logical to have more splines and have that mechanism that can free rotate as much as the rotation needed to match the closest spline... without rotating the whole implement.
@DIYMyWay
@DIYMyWay 4 жыл бұрын
Exactly, Joe! The design let’s you get the two adapters together before lining up the radial spline so that you’re not having to hold the weight of the PTO shaft while aligning the splines. With the regular PTO shaft, I have to hold the shaft up until I have lined up the splines then push it on. The PTO-Connect is a lot easier on my back.

@DIYMyWay 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Brandon! Yes, it expensive, especially if you buy separate male adapters for every implement. I wouldn't do that, since it is so easy to get the male adapter on and off the implement PTO shafts. I'd just leave my one male adapter connected to the female adapter on my tractor until I need it. It still ends up being faster and less hassle than wrestling with the stock connector. I think the price will come down as the market grows and production scales up. Thanks for watching!

Martin, After watching your video I purchased one for my 2501. Excellent video! Question though. How tight should the two SS screws be and what keeps them from loosening up and falling out without the male adapter connected? Is blue Loctite a good idea for the 3 allen set screws? Lastly, why does TAO's recommend the plastic collar? Maybe a "design flaw" when mowing heavy brush? Thanks.
@DIYMyWay
@DIYMyWay 3 жыл бұрын
Hi David! I hope you have as good of luck with yours as I have with mine. On the SS screws. I don't know. I imagine they use Loctite on them. As for the Allen screws, Loctite blue certainly won't hurt, but it is unnecessary with the snap rings. The explanation I was given for the safety clip was this (quoted from and email from TAO): "The safety clip is due to our product insurance. Our insurance provider wanted an extra layer of security to prevent any accidental disconnection of the adapter, because the product is so new and there is no history of it or anything similar on the market to compare it to. Please note that we have NOT received any report of the adapter coming apart or damage any equipment." Hope that helps! Martin

Interesting... But I can't really justify it and it's not a cheap date... especially when you start adding male adapters to everything you own. For my stuff, I would also have to cut a couple of the shafts on implements and then if you sell them someone may have to replace the drive shaft. (And what if you own more than one tractor... Then more $$) Most times I have little trouble hooking up a pto shaft as long as I have remembered to keep them lubricated and clean them now and again. But hey, it looks very well made and if you like it and can justify the cost more power to you!

Ordered one today. I'm tired of breaking my knuckles getting under the BX PTO. I tried a quick extender with the Pats system, but the spring loaded balls worked themselves loose, and the extender rubbed against the rear PTO seal, causing it to fail. $500 later, I'm looking for a better solution. I hope this is it.

@@DIYMyWay Talk about great customer service. I sent them an email to let them know the issues I had, and I got an immediate response asking for details, and pictures of the PTO area. I sent them pictures of my setup, with the Messicks stabilizers and the Pat's easy hitch. They responded within minutes that the modified design would work well. This was all after normal business hours. I'm looking forward to trying it out. Thanks for the heads up.

One question, with the additional length of the PTO connect do you find your top link also needs to be extended? My top link is already near its max extension. Martin I truly enjoy the quality of your videos and the wealth of information they provide, you should be very proud. I can only imagine the time and effort it requires to produce such a fine series of videos. Keep up the good work. May God continue to bless you and your family.
@DIYMyWay
@DIYMyWay 4 жыл бұрын
Hi bwise! No, it should not affect the top link because it doesn't extend the distance of your implement from your tractor, which is determined by the length of your 3 point lift arms. However, 3 point quick connect systems like a quick hitch or Pat's Easy Change do extend the distance of the implement from the tractor by about 4 inches, which is why I had to get a longer top link when I installed my Pat's Easy Change system. Also I added a PTO extender to keep my PTO shafts at the same relative length to avoid risking them being to short. Your main consideration will be whether you have to shorten your PTO shafts to prevent possible binding due to being too long when using the PTO-Connect. Thank you for your kind words! I really appreciate the positive feedback!
@bwise114
@bwise114 4 жыл бұрын
Yep, now that you pointed out the length is a function or the tractors 3 point hardware its obvious. Three years ago when I installed the Pat’s easy change system (that I love) it did require my toplink to extend almost to its limit. I guess that’s what gave me immediate concern before fully thinking it through. Thanks again for your help and guidance. You’re a good guy!
@DIYMyWay
@DIYMyWay 4 жыл бұрын
Ah, you have the Pat’s system too! Well, if you didn’t have to replace your PTO shafts due to being to short, then the PTO-Connect will allow them to operate at their original pre-Pat’s length, so it would act like a PTO-extender. Thanks again for the kind words!

where can i have my pto shaft cut if needed. Also how will I know if it needs shortened?
@DIYMyWay
@DIYMyWay 3 жыл бұрын
Hi David! Any metal fabrication place can do it or your tractor dealership, but you could do it with either a metal chop saw or an angle grinder with a metal cutting wheel. Just file the cut edges smooth afterwards. The PTO shaft is too long if during the movement of your 3 point up and down it collapses all the way and binds up. Ideally you want the length to be no more than a couple inches of fully collapsed throughout the motion of the 3 point. There are some good videos on the topic on KZbin. Good luck and thanks for watching!

Starting as a 12 year old I would haul 30 loads of silage a day, each load hop off the tractor and hook up the 540 pto as fast as I could push the button. I don't know how it could have been any faster. I don't see the point of this.

@DIYMyWay
@DIYMyWay 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Samuel! I'm not an expert on this and haven't had to do it, but generally speaking you pull the two sections apart and cut both section by the amount you need to shorten it. I'm sure there are KZbin videos on how to do it correctly. Thanks for watching!

If you don't have the equipment to shorten the shaft, I would google driveline service and see if they will take care of the job. I have a company with that name in California that does my PTO work for me. They also repair and fabricate drive lines and PTOs.

I am kind of disappointed with my PTO Connect, as while it looked easy and convenient in theory, it wasn't so much in my actual reality. I still end up having to wrestle getting the plate on the implement's PTO shaft to line-up and mate to the plate on the tractor's PTO. I have a JD 3032E, and it's been the same experience on several different implements.

@@tractoradd-ons2686 What ended up the conclusion to the challenges of connecting? I would be interested in knowing. This isn't an inexpensive product and although we only have a PTO snowblower, getting the stock shaft collar to snap into locked position when cold/freezing is always a challenge. Thinking this might be easier with this product. But connection challenges are not encouraging me to buy considering the cost. First of season connect and when PTO shaft shear bolts break would be the benefit for us if we chose to buy. Again, has this issue been resolved?
