A couple of other things to do if you know you have time: 1) Get the laundry caught up! You don't know when you are going to get another chance. 2) Take a shower. Again, it might be a few days until the next one. 3) Throw a few containers of water in the freezer and in the fridge. That extra thermal mass will extend the time for the other important items to stay cold, and you'll have the extra water too!

My cats and I had to evacuate last year from hurricane Ian and went to a shelter. I was ready and had a good experience. I was able to see where I was lacking and get preps for next time. When we got home the electric was back on so no problems there. The time we evacuated in 2017 there was no electric for a few days when we got back but I had everything we needed. I am always learning and prepping

I don't live in an area where I would have to bug out, and I'm not leaving our livestock. Our natural disasters would be blizzards, and I've lived through those for decades. Thunderstorms or blizzards may knock out power. I have many various ways to heat/cook/light a living space. What I really recommend is to keep bottles of water frozen in the freezer, or bag up some of your ice. Before a rain or wind storm, I will take the most used items out of the refrigerator and put them in coolers with stored ice so I don't have to open the refrigerator. I'm not running the generator if the power is going to be out for a few hours. If there are severe thunderstorm alerts, I get all my water buckets, water troughs filled up to water livestock, and put water troughs under the eaves to catch runoff. We also have totes for water off the sheds. In the house, I fill up jugs, and those spigot containers that some people use for parties. It's pretty hard to wash your hands with one hand. Put these on the side of the sinks so you can have a continual stream of water. In the fall, these are often on sale for really cheap. Fill your coffee pot for tomorrow. I have large water tanks/bottles with human drinking water, and I have a bailer bucket for the well if things really go down. LIGHTS: I have a bunch of various solar lights. The strings of them are strung down the barn aisle with the little solar panel on the south side of the barn, up high. Portable solar lights are always in the greenhouse so I can bring them in and either put them in something like a canning jar, or hang them up over the kitchen sink/stove. Pay attention to the amount of light they put out. A tiny one in the bathroom will suffice, you want more powerful ones in the kitchen. Have cots, sleeping bags, and some type of cushions to hunker down in one main area.

Food in a refrigerator should last up to three days providing it is opened rarely. The foods which would go bad more quickly would still be OK for 24 hours. In a freezer, food will remain frozen for 2-3 days and edible for 2-3 days past that. Keep the doors closed.

Hey J.R. and all...the first thing to do is not panic....or the first thing not to do...😉 Information is part of being prepared. If you are prepared, there is no reason to let the situation dictate a reaction in a negative manner. If we are prepared, we can act on the information and up our chances to be safe and get through the crisis. 👍

Thanks, JR, for some more great prepping tips. I would like to emphasize for everyone how useful a full tank of gas can be when the power goes out, even if you're not going anywhere and even if it's only for a few days. First of all that gas can serve as reserve fuel if you have a gas-powered generator, and in the gas tank of the car is about the safest place you could store it. Plus, it would be good to have a syphon type pump so that you can get that gas out of the car when you need it and practice with the syphon ahead of time so that you're not fumbling around with it in an emergency. Lastly even if you don't have any outside use for that extra gas, your car can idle for a few days on a full tank and be a great lifeboat if the house should become too hot or cold to stay inside. I only ask that you have the car out in the open to reduce the risk of having the exhaust fumes get into the car or the house.

The day you have to relay on your preps 100% is one day from them being depleted. Because we don't know the extent of SHTF, its difficult to plan for how we will replenish/scavenge to replace those preps your using each and every day. The new normal for survival will be very labor intensive 24/7.

Make sure you have some detailed, paper, road maps of your area as well as a national road atlas. A Garmin or other satellite-connected navigation device is good under normal circumstances but is of limited value for finding alternate routes when all lanes in one direction of the best route are suddenly closed because of a major accident, landslide, etc. A paper map can show you where the nearest highway exit will take you and where those small roads connect to larger roads. We travel across country multiple times each year and there have been times when a section of the interstate was closed for hours because of a major pile-up. Being able to quickly find an alternate route early got us out of there well before the Highway Patrol was able to divert traffic on a detour route. And because we were ahead of the diverted traffic, the small fuel stations along the detour route still had fuel, food and no wait to use the restrooms. Always have a low-tech alternative to that Garmin because you never know when you may have to evacuate ahead of a wildfire or create your own detour route if an accident closes a major roadway.

Have a back up plan for your back up plan. I live in wildfire country. Had a plan that should a fire come near us, that we would preload the utility trailer with as many of our dry goods and as camping gear as we could fit. Upon voluntary evacuation announcement we would bugout. Well now the truck has died and we have no other vehicle capable of hauling it. I downsized and went on a camping trip. Definitely have to do some more prioritizing and purging to fit what we actually need in our small SUV. 😢

Great video and great information that we can all use. Looking over my preps I know that two way communication is lacking. I have the Midland ER310 emergency radio, but I'm looking at getting a GMRS or a ham radio and really don't know enough about either to make a good choice. I plan to stay put under any circumstances short of my house being on fire so a base type set up would work best for me. I would also like to be able to scan police, fire and EMT channels for any information I could gather in an emergency situation. I imagine I'm best off having a dedicated scanner along with either the ham or GMRS radio. Any suggestions from others with more knowledge on the subject is always welcome. JR, thanks again for all you do.

I know that a lot of agencies are moving to digital comms, so traditional police scanners may not be able to do what they used to. GMRS is good for close to mid range communication. They require a license to use but no exam. I’ve been able to get around 5 miles out of my mobile setup without upgrading the antenna. Eton makes a radio that can pick up most frequencies but it’s expensive and only receives. You can’t use it to transmit.

@@diypreppertv thank you so very much. CB radios are OLD school. Trying to get everything ready. Husband is extremely ill and is pretty limited. Love your videos, God bless!

Call pawn shops. If in U.S. go to any travel stop truck stop. Any truck stop by an interstate will have cases of them. Don't forget to get a good antenna. While there look around. They sell blankets ,small battery refrigerators. Good luck and prayers for your husband and you ANGELA

You mentioned a good knife under $20 in one of your videos. What was the name of it? Started with an M, I believe.
