Hi from Sweden. We harvest rainwater and I purify using the following methods: I filter it through cloth first into a large pot, then boil it for three minutes (altitude). I use the kitchen cooker for that but also have a working woodstove if no electricity is available and if need be, will use a fire outdoors. I have a two-bucket set up..the top bucket contains layers of fine sand, clean gravel and activated charcoal, each layer separated by cotton fabric. I pour the cooled, boiled water into the top of this and it trickles through and filters down into the bottom bucket via holes in the base of the top and in the lid of the bottom one. In winter, when it doesn't rain, we process snowmelt in the same way, though of course it takes much more snow to make a boilable pot of water than it does rain. As back ups, I store (short term) bleach, water purification tablets, a portable filter straw and of course, more activated charcoal.

Thank you for showing people that no one filter is enough to make water safe and that filtration and purification aren't the same thing! I stock up on zero water filters because they are the best when it comes to PPM without having to use any electricity or fuel but the water does in fact still need to be boiled or treated with bleach. I love how you break that down and make it super clear to people who might not fully understand. I have to get better at explaining that.

I live near the sea and so, as well as the fresh water purifaction set ups (including the low priced virus removing "pure clear life filter" straws), I have a simple portable desalination set up. Simply made from Stainless steel funnel (which goes over the container to be heated) and a copper coil held in place at the neck end using a champagne cork with a small hole in it. Have tested and it works a very well (salinity tested using voltmeter and taste).

My friend was stationed in Dubai and stopped in India a few years back. He said people would literally do all their business in the river, then only a few feet down someone would be washing thier clothes or filling up a bucket of the poo water for cooking/drinking. Even thiugh i live in America, i now use a reverse osmosis system because it grossed me out so much.

Hey JR! This is great info, and many ways I could have clean water. I bought a Zero water counter top filter to use every day since our water is weird. However, I also keep stored water so if I feel uneasy about it, I can run it through my Zero Water system and feel like it's safe. I have stashed the Sawyer filters since you suggested those a long time back. I appreciate you and your info! Take care!

A special piece of equipment I never see mentioned, one obvious reason most are made of cast iron and are very heavy. But if your homestead/hunkered down in place and have a existing shallow well...get you a Ole school Pitcher pump, have several packing for replacement and or leather to cut some. Tractor Supply is a good source to purchase one.

Depending on source and available time, a settling tank can help save your filters. Just let water sit in a bucket for a while so that sediment can settle to bottom of bucket. Pour, siphon, scoop or otherwise get top water without taking gunk from bottom. Some contaminant float. If you see anything on surface such as oil slick or soap scum this may not be an acceptable water source but you can reduce concentration by discarding top layer from settling tank.

Absolutely. I used to use one when traveling to Africa. It worked very well, and should be part of one’s backup systems for a severe disaster. The Grayl is superior for short-term use because it also filters out industrial chemicals but their filters only last a short time, even with pre-filtration.

If your bottled water is in a cool dark place out of the light, then your bottles are probably off gassing. I wouldn't drink it. You could use it for washing dishes, bathing, cleaning. Sorry, if you stored a lot. The off gassing, can't be boiled off.

I recommend powdered bleach. Longer shelf life vs bottled liquid chlorine. Also, for those interested in longterm solutions when you must rely on your own resources, look up on yt videos/instructions for MAKING chlorine bleach! From sea water and a car battery I believe. Chlorine bleach in bottled eventually turns into water I believe.
