Great timing, ya rodents can be a issue. A tip to keep them away from your stuff is lavender and/or mint leaves. I combine the 2 in tea bags and suspend them around my shelf close to the floor. Keep the area clean vacuum every weeks and wash the floor. Thanks for upload and have a nice week. Peace

I have put Bay Leaves on every shelf in my pantry for years. I do still put my bags of flour, etc. in the freezer for a week just to be safe! I also put one in the bottom of the trash can and corners of all doors. Cinnamon, underneath small appliances on countertops can deter ants. Stay safe everyone!

Luckily I bought a lot of #10 cans Augason Farms Cheesy Broccoli soup because it's become a new favorite. I've also discovered Hoosier Hill Farms white cheddar powder makes the absolute BEST mac & cheese!

Great info here. Nothing worse than prepping a lot of food, and find out a year later, that insects or mice ruined it. I use a vacu-suck machine to portion and seal my dry preps. Hopefully, that's sufficient ? As far as vermin are concerned, I have numerous peppermint plants (and cotton balls soaked in peppermint oil) scattered around the house to keep them away. They hate it, and will vamoose pretty quickly. One note... peppermint doesn't repel your in-laws at all !!? 👴🏼 Thx JR. Cheers 😎🦅🇺🇸

Take heed to what DIY Prepper says here, you never know when or how you will be tested. Spent some time in the military and know what destroys a home and everything in it and because of that I had no plans to watch this post. Then I went to the cellar and was greated by 2" of water and spray from a fitting to the pressure tank. Thankfully most things were protected. So aside from clean up and repairs we only lost 4 boxes of mac & cheese and a container of quick oats. Thank the Father!

Keeping the cats in the neighborhood alive might help to deal with mice and rats. At least a gardener, who put meat into his compost pile, described how nothing really helped in the long run, but having two cats on patrol.

Living in colder climate means that there is a danger of freezing water damaging the cans. I'm not sure about food with smaller water content, such as spam. May be somebody could tell what happens with it in freezing temperature. In worst case situation you won't have electricity, nor fuel, so you won't have controlled temperature - in which case a root cellar might be the best option.

I accidentally left several cans of food in our camper over the winter in the upper peninsula of Michigan (think 20 degrees below zero). We ate everything the following summer; no noticeable difference with the fruit, mushrooms were tough and rubbery, green beans had no flavor, baked beans were a little mushy, and tuna seemed normal. None of the cans were bulging or looked different except rust had just started to form on the bottom rim of the fruit cans. Bottom line wouldn’t recommend it, but the food was still edible.

@diypreppertv2 жыл бұрын
Not sure, it would just depend on how hot it got and how widely the temperature fluctuated. Being under the bed may have protected it a little since it was shaded and had some insulation above it.

Another item learned the hard way: buying cases of bottled water. We live in the Chihuahuan Desert on the Mexican border where many days are single-digit humidity. Less than a year after purchasing several shrink wrapped cases of 24-30 (11-12 oz) bottles, I noticed that almost every bottle only had about 6-7 ounces in them. Dried right out. Actually, those bottles are made to degrade rather quickly. So, house plants and dog watering bowls got filled for 'free' for a few weeks, then invested in serious water containment. Friends who live in 'normal' places haven't noticed this problem. Seems to be just the bane of us desert rats.

@@ericarnaud7983 I've never heard the government say that self sufficient people who are prepared for emergencies are the enemy. Only those who are threatening violence. Most of those people aren't preppers. In fact, from what I've observed, most of them don't hardly have a pot to piss in. If you didn't watch Biden's whole speech about that the other day & only caught cherry picked snippets, I recommend watching the whole thing. He clarified multiple times that he was talking about the violent extremists, not conservatives. We have a democratic process in America that has worked well for over 200 years. There's no need to talk about shooting those who think differently. We swing right, then we swing left & we have always managed to achieve balance in the country where the needs of the vast majority are being met. We've prospered peacefully under that system & I, for one, don't want my grandchildren growing up in a country that resembles Afghanistan, with warring factions & strife. That's what the government is trying to avoid when they say that violence will not be tolerated. The majority of Americans didn't want it from the left in 2020 & we don't want it from the right.
