Great video! After paying a shop to diagnose a stuck fan on, I watched them slap on a new solenoid, then new high pressure switch and charge 2 hours of labor. They swore it was fixed... Didn't bother diagnosing the fan clutch with a vacuum guage or pressure test. 20 mins down the road fan was stuck on... I drove home and personally removed the fan clutch and hub from the engine bay. Not a hard of a job. I opened the fan clutch on a table and found the 20 cent o ring falling apart, not sealing air in. You couldn't hear it leak but it was enough to force the fan to run. Folks, tips in this video will save you hundreds of dollars in bad repair service bills and the frustration of trusting unskilled/ lazy mechanics with your truck.

Great video. I subscribed. My 2017 Cascadia sat on my concrete driveway for a month (my bad for not starting it once a week for 30 minutes) and yesterday when I took it for a ride I noticed the fan was on all the time. Watched your video, verified I had air going to it with the ignition switch on, no air leaking, so I tapped on the fan clutch last night,but it would not release. This morning I started up the truck and aired it up to the 140 psi max (last night it was 110-120 psi), shut truck off, turned ignition to the on position and tapped the fan clutch 8 to 10 times and it released. Whew!! Seems to be fine and I will be starting the truck at least once a week from now on. Thanks again. Be safe. ✌️

12-19-2024; temperature 9 degrees;sitting at truck stop and my fan clutch was locked. Engine temp was at the bottom of the gauge (100*). I did the diagnostic as explained here (including tapping the back of the fan). I couldn't hear an air leak from the fan clutch, so I unplugged the electronic connection and tried to rotate the fan by hand. The fan was stiff but became free. I reconnected the electronic plug and started the engine. The fan was no longer locked and the engine was able to build heat. I believe the fan clutch locked from previously driving in a snow storm, but who knows? Regardless, the fan clutch became unstuck and I didn't have any more problems.

Some trucks like paccar may have two high pressure ac switches. One thing with Cummins isx if the fan clutch is bad it will stay in the on position. Also if the clutch is thin enough it can separate and now you have a clutch, fan and radiator to replace. I had the clutch fail in that fashion on my isx

perhaps it wasnt a bad switch. You could actually have high ac pressure. have them throw some gauges on and check. If it never ever shuts off, do the checks in this video. see if it is capable of shutting off at all. clutch or solenoid could be bad. see if you can spin it with the truck off key on

Great vid....my truck started making a high wind noise while driving. Could it be the fan clutch? The mechanic says I need to change the fan clutch solenoid....but he said the clutch itself is fine. I just wasn't sure if thats the reason for the high wind sound. But what I did notice when he checked and tried to spin the fan by hand....it didn't spin. But he did do air pressure test.....and his suggestion was getting solenoid replaced....it's a 2012 cascadia dd15
@DIYSEMI4 жыл бұрын
did he have the key on and air pressure built when he tried to spin it by hand? give that a try. if it spins by hand then the solenoid is releasing the clutch. If not, could be solenoid. try to walk thru the steps in the video. if he did test it with air then he is probably right. He looked at it hands on so I would probably trust what he had to say.

I have the Detroit D15 and some pressure is building up in the cooling system that pushes coolant out of the surge tank. Engine's fan looks OK. What could cause that problem?
@DIYSEMI4 жыл бұрын
that's not good news. without knowing all the details, the first things that come to mind are: bad air compressor, bad head gasket ,or cracked head. If you are looking to start looking for something simple first, check the cap on your surge tank...make sure it is the correct psi, and that it is functioning...or spend a few bucks on a new one. I'm not all that experienced with the dd15, drove one for a bit but never had to work on it. sorry to say, if it's not a faulty pressure cap, then it's probably an expensive fix. Someone more experienced with that engine would be more qualified to help you.... but that's just my first thoughts on it.
@namentatic49784 жыл бұрын
@@DIYSEMI , coolant is pushing and leaking through the little, overfilled hose. I noticed silicone under the heads. It says to me there is not head gasket, and somebody put just silicone. I do not think it is original. Truck is 2016, and has just around 300K miles on it. Thanks for your good advice. I appreciate it.

On my KW T800 the fan functions fine until I plug the new AC compressor in. It worked fine with the old compressor cycling on at 320 PSI and off around 150 but now if that new AC compressor is plugged in the fan stays on whether the AC is on or off.
@DIYSEMI3 жыл бұрын
It's gotta be reading high pressure? That's really weird
@RC-Heli8353 жыл бұрын
@@DIYSEMI Do mean like false high pressure? I let the pressure down thinking it might be over charged and now its not cooling at all where it was blowing ice cubes. This compressor cycles on and off constantly where the other one would not cut off unless high side dropped to 100 psi on the high side. This compressor cycles on at 230 or 240 and off at 420PSI on the high side. The old one worked great but I could not find a slow leak to save my life. The compressor was the only place left. The system would hold 220PSI of Nitrogen for 1 hr and gain a psi but not hold a charge but 2 days. 3rd day dropped off slowly to warm air. With dye I found a slow leaking shraeder but fixed it, charged it and the same thing 2 days cold and downhill from there. I could smell freon strong standing on the ground with the hood open the last little bit I ran the old compressor.
@DIYSEMI3 жыл бұрын
Had you checked the evaporator in the dash and Bunk for leaks? Usually if you can't find it, it's in there. I'd have to say there is definitely a problem with that new compressor 420psi is quite high. Surprised the relief plug doesn't release on the back of the compressor. I forgot... Have u replaced the high pressure sensor? Usually short cycling is a sign of low charge,. But doesn't sound like that's your case. It should not be kicking in at 240 either. It's hard to tell what's happening here. Seems like it functioned right, except for a leak. Until the new compressor was put on. I assume that you pulled a vacuum on the system and all that before you charged it? Just asking cuz this is puzzling
@RC-Heli8353 жыл бұрын
@@DIYSEMI Yea I took the evaporator out and soaped it good with lower pressure in the system. Yes I vacuumed the system down to 250 microns and its stayed 10 minutes while getting ready to charge it. I hooked my charge line up and vacuumed it down to 250 microns as well. What I did this evening is let the freon pressure down lower than would have ever worked on the old compressor and it seems to be working. I've been running with the thing unplugged so my fan don't burn up a lot of extra fuel. I'm gonna try it tomorrow and see if it will work. This is so crazy though static pressure right now will be 52.5 psi. The Kenworth T800 maintenance manual says it should be about 66 psi. And that's why I tried letting down the pressure. I think I let off just a little too much and will freeze up, I do have a freeze switch so should be fine. Its blowing ice cubes right now. With the old compressor it ran best before at 105 static and 25 low side. High side varied from 150 to 320 with the fan cycling. The compressor almost never shut off though. And that blew ice cubes.

Have u checked to see if perhaps you actually are running hi ac pressure. Maybe switch not bad but pressure is actually high. Also, ecm can cause this too only computer can chk that. Watch my video on using ac gauges to check pressure. Look for 150 -250 on the high side....see where fan kicks in at. Get it good and warm.

@@DIYSEMI okay thanks man. Ecm is not throwing any fault codes at all but I haven't checked the ac yet but will do so and post an update if that solves my problem. Thanks man, appreciate your word.

2013 Clark diesel 12.7 glider like this one. Fan stays on about 30 minutes and then releases. Today the fan hub is leaking air when it’s not released key on (I tried tapping with hammer) but when I bypass the solenoid by connecting supply air directly it releases and doesn’t leak. This is a new solenoid. A bad solenoid or do I need to rebuild fan? Can I get by with just cleaning and o ring kit or do I need to do a full rebuild?
