My bedroom wall was very cold last winter as wall was 42 degrees with (5/8" drywall) using radiant oil heater when it was in single digits outside I recently cut a small hole in dry wall to see that there is NO insulation in the walls as no surprise as home was built by very unexperienced builders back in the mid 40's. I may try this on my walls this winter.

Well I just watched part one and now part two. How did it work out when you covered it with the contract paper. How much did the temperature come up in the room. Did heat better without covering the refrigerator or what. I have a room that's cooler and want to make it wamer.
@GAK1atatt Жыл бұрын
Hi Tuba. Thanks for the vid. There is radiant heat and convective heat. What you are getting is fundamentally a radiant heat barrier. There is one thing that you need to keep in mind when you measure temp with your infrared thermometer. Your own body's radiant heat will be reflected back to your IR thermometer if you stand in front of a thermally reflective surface and it will skew your readings. The R value this product is just 1 per layer for convective heat, but goes up to 6 with and air space between the wall and the Reflectix. Do you experience a big difference in your room? Is your air temp any higher or does it just feel warmer?

Reflectix should work very well in the summer time where your heat input due to thermal radiation will be high. For my windows, I used clear bubble wrap on the top panes and clear shrinkable plastic on the bottom panes. Some windows I bubble wrapped both panes (windows that aren't used or seldom seen from the street). Difference is quite noticeable. Some windows I had to place a bath towel over the lower panes (Store rant out of clear plastic). Goal is to keep the air off the single pane glass. Furnace now runs about 25% to 30% per hour instead of every 10 minutes. 100+ year old house (even has the old ceramic post insulators for some of the wiring). Most walls are not insulated at all. Going to be hard to fix that without tearing up all the wood paneling and lead abatement afterwards. All that should help in the summer time too by keeping A/C costs lower.

Also can I use it on the ceiling and walls of my crawl space? I’m North of Toronto. The area has a high water table so the crawl space gets very damp early spring when the snow starts melting.

Thank you so much for these videos! I'm going to be trying this before winter comes around since my house is over 100 years old with no insulation. The other place it gets very cold is from the wood floors since the house has a crawl space where all the cold air is. Do you know of any indoor solution to prevent drafting from the old wood floors? Thanks again, your video is brilliant!! :)
@WadaGoodIdea3 жыл бұрын
Thank you Oldiesvlog really glad that you found the video helpful! I also had a cold floor and solved the problem with the same product but had to do it from the underneath! But mine was a cantilevered floor so it wasn’t that hard yours requires crawling into the crawl space😬 But unfortunately thats the only way I dont know any other solution for the floors! Maybe floor to floor carpeting would help but you might as well get your crawl space insulated with that money!

Great video, thank you so much for sharing. Could I use laminate planking/flooring instead of wall paper over the refectix? I recently purchased an older house and my propane bill has been in the $600's every month since I moved. I could not figure out way. Only 2 people live in the house and we keep the thermostat at 60. A HVAC contractor referred me to an insulation specialist. Turns out some of the walls are missing insulation entirely. I wish the initial inspection would have found that. Having insulation put in is out of my budget at the moment, so this is a great idea.

I would love to do this! I have an issue with my living room wall... It's slanted! It's not a perfect rectangle like yours! I'm not good with angles! I'm scared I might screw it up. Plus, it's connected to dining room and there's a huge slant and very uneven. It's like the living room wall/ceiling is 2ft higher than the dining room wall/ceiling. Very difficult for me. Don't know if I can do it. But I think I will try. One day. 😭

@WadaGoodIdea3 жыл бұрын
Thank you Jayne! You can just staple it directly to a plywood I dont think you need to prime it. I did not put wallpaper over the double layered part of the wall since I lean my bookshelf against there but if you can do it flat enough and not too bumpy, wallpaper should set well! Solid wall as in cement or motar, wood or drywall. Cement use anchor screws. Wood use wood screws or staple gun and drywall, drywall screws. If you had a nailer gun it would work.

How about condensation? How do you prevent mold from forming behind those panels?
@ZoltanBalintQC2 жыл бұрын
As air becomes colder, it can hold less vapor in suspension. The degree of saturation increases until a dew-point is reached and condensation occurs. Heat flows from warm to cold by conduction. A material which is in contact with air colder than itself on one side and air warmer than itself on the other side, will continuously extract heat from the warmer air by conduction and lose it to the colder air. As the contacting warmer air becomes cooler by this action, the amount of vapor it can hold in suspension without condensing becomes smaller. The denser and bulkier the material, the more heat it can extract before attaining room temperature, if it ever does. The scientific construction of multiple layers of aluminum, fiber and reflective air spaces minimizes condensation-formation on or within this type of insulation, when installed in building spaces.
@crazysquirrel94259 ай бұрын
Note: doubling the insulation layers does not double the R-Value. Diminishing returns on thickness.
