I didnt study under Dizzy Gillespie. I studied under the upright player (Chris White) accompanying Dizzy. I earned my bachelors degree in music technology, record production, and artist development as a direct result of Chris Whites tutelage at Bloomfield College of Bloomfield, NJ. Give more props to those who performed along side "the greats". I love you professor White. Hope your reading this.

Jazz is and will always be apart of my life. Dad used to blast jazz and smooth jazz through the house on Saturday mornings while I took a bath. Can remember this going back to as early as 4 or 5 years old. I’m from the bay area(Ca) I prefer 91.1 our local jazz station over most stuff. I also fell in love with hip hop via A Tribe Called Quest, digable planet, De La Soul and many others who incorporated jazz. Check out Henry Wu and Yussef Dayes - Caligraphy live session. You won’t be disappointed! Much love! ✊🏾

Nobody can play like that,living or dead. His harmonics and rhythms are unique. I'm happy i got to see him perform in person many times and talk to him. Gosh, we were spoiled! Diz would come to our city so often. In a club setting and Jazz festival setting. Now if you want to here that type of trumpet playing you can only listen to the recordings or see video because nobody can sound like him. We miss you DIZZY!!!

Whether by accident or by design, Dizzy defied orthodoxy to become maybe the most technical trumpeter in the realm of "Organic Real Jazz" mastery.
@reservoirdogny8 жыл бұрын
you used the same term my coworker used "orthodoxy". I'm learning cello and he is a base player giving me some guidance. He in a way said jazz players do not follow orthodoxy. But how can you improvise if you are orthodox in playing. It wouldn't be jazz.
@wyndhleodumegwu2538 жыл бұрын
reservoirdogny: Great point! At a glance, it appears to be contradictory. It is "orthodox" within the confines of "the Jazz" as existed - the established norm or traditional concept and/or interpretation and presentation thereof. That apparent norm had been set by King Oliver and Louis Armstrong, Coleman Hawkins and Lester Young, Jelly Roll Morten (sp) and Eubie Blake - among many others. Roy Eldridge and Bix Biederbeck, Don Byas and Sonny Rollins and Sonny Stitt - among many others, followed diligently. A kind of (expected) "orthodoxy" was established - unintentionally so, I guess. Dizzy Gillespie would have none of it; Charlie Parker, not unlike Dizzy, rebelled vehemently with a seemingly new approach - Bebop. Presently, Charlie Parker's once "unorthodox" adventurism has become the "orthodox" crave of almost all alto saxophone players. John Coltrane, as a professional student on alto saxophone, initially embraced the (new) "orthodoxy" of Charlie Parker. He "wisely" switched to tenor saxophone, abandoned the new Parkeresque "orthodoxy" and subsequently created his own "unorthodox" style of blazing - a style which is the desire of (almost) all serious tenor saxophonists.. With so many tenor saxophonists' imitating John Coltrane's sound and style, the once "unorthodox" approach of the latter is bound to be the established norm - the new "orthodoxy". James Carter's approach is wide apart from 'Trane's. His style, although the apparent sum total of the saxophone approaches that preceded him, may be considered to be outside the realm of the now established "orthodoxy" (of John Coltrane's) With the passing of time therefore, the new "unorthodox" approach may very well be the (present) norm - or, the new orthodoxy, so to say. Merely my personal take! .

I too am a big fan of Fat girl but Dizzy influence on him and all the great players who came after is immeasurable. Fats style through Clifford became the dominant influence on the vanguard of the greats who followed Clifford i.e Morgan, Hubbard, Little etc. But Dizzy is without question the father of Bebop Trumpet and his style was revolutionary and his technique was mindblowing. He also was teacher/mentor to Fats, Miles, Dorham and all the best young Bebop musicians.

@GeoCoppens Much as I admire Dizzy, I feel that he roughly played one standard solo all the time. I agree that Fats Navarro was a greater stylist, but to be the best you have to be up against a good many players, from Bix to Miles. I don't know, they were all tremendous: Harry Edison, Jonah Jones, Cootie Williams, Jabbo Smith, Satchmo, Brownie, Lee Morgan, Art Farmer (now he could play bebop!). Best to you.
