You sir are an exceptionally good dj! I'm both a sound engineer and a dj and deal with misunderstandings about the trim feature almost every weekend. The reason for the Trim/Gain knobs is to bring all your records to the same volume level. I would like to add that you should always aim to keep your Trim/Gain volume at 0db (full green lights but not orange). This is because the output volume of the mixer depends on the Master Volume (top right knob) and going above green reduces audio quality. So never go above green with the Trim/Gain when you still have space on the Master Volume. This will truly make your music sound a lot better.

I forgot to adjust the trim during my pannel assessment 🤦‍♂️ and one song overpowered the other. I blame the nerves, however, lesson learnt. We grow, forward we go. Thank you for the vid.

Thanks! Just discovered this when I was researching recording techniques so maybe you can answer a related trim / gain staging question? If you're recording a set with an external recorder (through the "REC OUT" RCA jacks), do you still adjust trim? If you don't then of course it'll still affect what the crowd would hear, but I guess for this assume that its not a live set and you're just trying to get the best recording. I always adjust trim like in your video, but I notice when I record the peaks of my waveform are all over the place so I wonder if its because I'm adjusting the trim or if I just have a bunch of other mistakes I need to fix lol

Hey Arman, love you videos! What are your thoughts on platinum notes? I have used it a couple time on sets I have recorded and love the fact that I don't have to adjust the gain at all. Have you ever used it? If so, do you think it is a good tool?
@SoundofArman
@SoundofArman 5 жыл бұрын
I've never used it so I'm afraid I can't comment - that said, I'm kind of skeptical of anything that claims to be able to make music sound better through some kind of automated process - is it really going to be able to do a better job than the engineers who mastered it?
@SuperEmanuel98
@SuperEmanuel98 5 жыл бұрын
they compress the audio in different ways, for me it is destroying the sound quality and what the artist and engineers had in mind when making the track. Same reason I don't use spotify, they also do some volume automation thing to keep the volume appear even
@SoundofArman
@SoundofArman 5 жыл бұрын
@@SuperEmanuel98 Yeah not worth it. Especially if you are paying good money on Beatport for lossless files like WAV or AIFF - then you would just be losing quality you are paying for. Best to use your ears!

This question is unrelated to this post, but I was wondering if a song is about to end, and the NEW track you want to bring in has only 4 bars before the melody starts to begin, how do you go about beatmatching it perfectly on the very first try? I've seen your beatmatching videos; however, the music I like to listen to is more darkwave/industrial, and many songs do not start or end with 16 bars like your examples with house music (a lot are 4 to 8 bars in my case). Because I wouldn't have 16 or more bars to work with, transitions would have to be made quickly. Take for example the song "Take Me Higher" by Qual (116 bpm). The first 4 bars also contain bass, and I would also like to bring this track in at full volume to hear that bass as the other track is ending. How would I achieve this without trainwrecking on the first try? Would you recommend looping the beginning of the new track first through the headphones, then once beatmatched, bring in at full volume once the other is ending? Is there another efficient way to beatmatch tracks with 4 bars? Do you have any examples of this? I appreciate your videos and hope you can provide some advice. Thank you.

I think you could loop the beginning as long as it sounds fluid and start to mix that loop in until you hear a good place to bring it in fully. Or you could set hot cues and bring it in with a little more flair, although this won’t be as smooth or natural

Why should i not EQ the highs ?
@SoundofArman
@SoundofArman 5 жыл бұрын
You can, but you don't hear much if you bring in a track with mid and bass killed. I like to have the highs so I have the high hat as a bit of a beat matching reference as i mix in.

false. matched key doesn't change the fact that the two songs have different overall volumes and therefore different energy levels.
