Learning to properly set the volume, also called gain structure, of the DJ equipment you are using can be the difference between sounding incredible and sounding like a complete novice.
With so many different places to set your volume - your PA speakers, master output on your controller, channel gain, volume fader - it is worth taking the time to learn the right settings for each so you can sound your best.
Here's how to set volume levels the right way.

@@dj_paultuk7052 the fact of the matter is that nowadays too many dj's are dumbed down, so they don't know or don't care about good sound. That's sad because back in the day almost every dj knew how to properly tune their equipment and was proud of it.

One of the things I like about traktor is the extremely precise gain staging it has. Volume can be adjusted by as low as .1 db increments. When combined with the onboard limiters and autogain engaged, the sound is very level, yet sonically pure. Now when it comes to gain staging, dj's need to gain stage INSIDE the software first. This prevents sending an already hot signal to your hardware. Inside traktor, with all mixer controls set to zero, i adjust track gains to just above zero. The master output I adjust to just below 0 db. Next I adjust the levels on my controller to zero. Now I have software and hardware both calibrated to just below zero

I notice a lot of ppl asking about adjusting the volume in the DJ software. I use Serato DJ Pro. Setting the volume is part of my import process. I set volume, cue points, & color tags for every song, when I DL into Serato. Those features will then be permanently imbedded into the song file until you change them. It is important to program the output of each song , because depending on the file source, genre, and era of music recording volumes & quality often times are different. When you cue your next song in the headphones, watch the meter on that channel. If it matches the song currently playing, your golden! 🤘

@GjerrusAllMighty
@GjerrusAllMighty 4 жыл бұрын
@@kikizomba_on_googleplus yeah, no worries. So say u subscribe to a DJ pool. U see a song u like. DL that song to where ever u store ur music. I keep all my music on my hard-drive in my music folder. When I pull that music into serato. I organize it into crates depending on the genre & music situation I see myself using that song. But before I finish depending what software u have, in the offline player, when u load that song u can adjust it for volume, set cue points, & also in the track listing u can color code the track on the far left to further help u remember details about the track. All this data is stored permenately into the song. Even if u back it up onto another computer. Serato has "ID3 tags" that are embedded in the files!

0 db is called the unity reference. The level at which your channel or outputs from the mixer outputs at 100% signal. Anything in the red will be over 100% exponentially, so 3db is 200%, 6 db is 400% 12db is 800% etc... Your ear will not hear this as a doubling of output level, but your equipment accepting this signal be amplifying this signal to attain the acoustic output equivalent to unity reference, above or below, so if you had to attach an oscilloscope to the outputs of say a 200w per channel output amplifier at unity gain into the amplifier, you would theoretically see a doubling of amplifier output at every 3db, 400w at +3db, 800w at 6 db, 1600w at 12db, etc... The orange indicators in the plus db range are your crest output to your. All amplifiers have crest power (max) values or what is called the clipping level, your the amplifier or other equipment is incapable of outputting any more power/signal due to its design limitations. The output leds give an indication of your sound system output in terms of acoustic levels and headroom available at your amplifiers. The red led indicators give an indication of clipping of the output stage of that channel.

Good audio hardware does this automatically. For instance, the denon dnx1600 has this feature. It's perfect for mixing dj's. However, most audio gear, doesn't do this. I say that this is something that should be in every software and it should be adjustable.

Most of the problem with DJs out there is the gain staging from the Software. You got some good tips here but if the gain staging is bad software level then all these tips are worthless. Hitting the limiter helps to hide mixing errors but you lose a lot of quality and bass.

What if im connect to an power amplifier? Is it possible to go in the red? I had a performance in a club and the boss turnd up the gain on my controller. I know that the idividual songs i played were on diffrent volumes but even though I hit the red volume level it didn't sound bad. Im so confused If my set was bad due to the audio quality but everyone on that "rave" was going nuts...

I have an issue with many tracks sounding like high hats are being mixed over the top even if high eq is only on 50% and the track not being mixed, I don't know if this is a level problem, a setting problem in serato or a problem between mixon 4 and serato is there a solution? I don't have anything going into the red zone but the same track will sound out of proportion played through serato and listing to the track not through serato/mixon 4

@DJ Nostalgia Like Jesse said, it should be the FIRST step in gain staging your system Regarding auto gain, I use traktor and this works superbly. I set up the individual track gain, punch in auto gain and i never have to worry about mismatched levels between any track. All track levels stay constant. Obviously this is great when doing fast mixing.

What's the use of compressors or limiters some night clubs use?
@digitaldjtips
@digitaldjtips 4 жыл бұрын
That's a big enough question for another video Dawin :)
@DJActionVasquez
@DJActionVasquez 4 жыл бұрын
That IS a huge question, but I'll give you the light version. Compression is used to make sounds really pop. This is great to give the music a bigger than life sound. Limiting is done almost at the end of your audio chain, most times right before the crossover / amplifiers / powered speakers. So what the limiter does is it literally limits the peaks of the signal so that a very even signal is fed to the power amps. This prevents the transients / overly hot signals from overloading the amps.
@dawin6710
@dawin6710 4 жыл бұрын
@@DJActionVasquez I know what compression and limiting are. My question is (and I think Marc Santaromana understood it) What's their use in that environment where you are playing song after song . Why night club use them. To make song the same terms of loudness? To make songs more audible and larger than life etc..? Some of both and more? By the way I would like to also know what models/brands are popular for this application. Thanks

Everything makes sense accept running your faders al the way up to the top. I would never recommend that. When you start to see red the meter is letting you know that you're about about 6db below distortion (on pro audio gear anyway). Give yourself that headroom you were talking about in your faders. Get close to your unity gain stage at about 75% fader throw and you'll have the headroom you need when you need it.

We agree DJing like that is a good idea for some, but still worth setting your levels with everything wide "open" (in our view).

I have a sort of unrelated question: What is the main benefit of using Rekordbox or Serato while DJing? I feel totally fine with just using my CDJ's and mixer to DJ. I don't feel any need whatsoever to have a laptop with Rekordbox pulled up on it to control while DJing. Is it just to see the wave forms on the computer? It seems like virtually 100% of DJ's NEED to be controlling Rekordbox or Serato in order to DJ. I'm not seeing the reason why; it seems like more work and more money than just using a USB, CDJ's and a mixer.
@digitaldjtips
@digitaldjtips 4 жыл бұрын
Increased functionality (unless you're using top of the line CDJs which a lot of people are not), much bigger screen which is great for track searches (not to mention a proper keyboard), often it's a lot less money as well not more, again if you're using top end Pioneer CDJs and a mixer that's around 5k worth of gear - you could buy a laptop a DDJ-1000 and have thousands left

So....this video is great if your controller has outputs and inputs for XLR's & 1/4"....but if you have the following set up that many DJ"s have disregard most of what he's saying. Set up being: Laptop out to Y splitter in to sound board, then sound board out it's L/R Mains to your powered speakers. Having a soundboard opens up an entire other world of gain staging that has to work in conjunction with 1.) Laptop volume setting 2.) Laptop input stereo volume setting 3.) Controller trim/gain/fader settings into laptop 4.) Speaker setting itself. This isn't a bad video by any means but if you're a wedding DJ like I am, most of us have sound boards/desks and the gain structure has a few extra steps that can make or break you live.

@@digitaldjtips For instance, the "Numark Mixtrack Pro 3" connects to your laptop only with a USB cable.
