Earworm is a talented DJ, and his annual effort is always appreciated. But every year I know fewer songs than the previous year's mashup. Guess I'm officially "get off my lawn" years old now. 🙃 BRB. Gonna go listen to the 2009 edition for the gajillionth time.

I think pop music was catchier back then, nostalgia plays a role. And for the first few releases he did, it was unique. After some time, you associate the older mixes as the definitive versions of his craft. As we age, we lose touch with the current songs, so there's less familiarity to them. To say which is the better mix is subjective. I think streaming has diversified our listening habits. It's so easy now to live in the few genres of music we like without the radio hitting us with the same 12 songs every two hours. Tik Tok is kinda like that now. Remember the high pitched "oh no" song? That was on nearly every video. Maybe mix together all the trending Tik Tok songs every year as a spin off release to the top 100s of the year.

You know those times when you're all alone philosophizing (read it as philosophy + izing). I was doing this the other day and was trying to figure out if music has lost its optimism. I was thinking back to those songs from 2008-2012 (my highschool years) and thinking about how upbeat and party oriented they are and that I hadn't heard a song like them in a while. I first started to wonder, am I out of touch and just don't know modern music well enough. So I called my best friend who actually listens to hip hop and pop (I'm more of a rock guy myself) and is a middle school teacher so he has daily interactions with the youth ( quick reminder, we're both 30 as of this year). He defended the fact that no it's just we're both old but then I made the case that these DJ Earworm "End of the Year Mashes" would be a good study (that's how I ended up on this video) and that's when he was like OMG I think you're on to something. And my example for the difference was actually the 2011 one so not even your favorite one . Anyway I guess that was my Ted Talk

2023 was a year of very cautious music. Nothing big. Nothing flashy. Nothing nasty. Nothing godawful. The fact that DJ earworm was able to take such a timid year for music and make a halfway decent song mashing it up is a credit to his genius. Much better than 21 and 22.

Unpopular opinion, I like it. The selection was great this year, 80% of the songs hit hard, they flow and blend well together, it sounds like a Labour Day barbecue. I think the problem is people keep expecting the 2009 one every year, but music has changed. I'm nearly 30 now but I gotta say the only thing constant in life is change. Back in 2009 people swore music had died and "real music is from 1995" it's because our minds always like the music from when we were teenagers. But overall it's been a good year in music

Give this mashup a decade or so and you'll find people longing for the music of SZA, Olivia Rodrigo, Rema, PinkPantheress and Zack Bryan, and coming back to this mashup to comment on how nostalgic it feels. I grew up listening to your songs. Back in the day, with our super slow internet, the only way to catch your mashups was to download them at internet cafes. My brother used to snag them and load them onto my MP4. It was 15 years ago, man. I can't believe it. Thanks for all your hard work.

I looked at the list and I noticed two examples of Kpop boy group mediocrity reached #1 in the US. Does anybody outside of the BTS cult even know those songs?

I think this is a nice mashup with some of the biggest songs of 2023, according to Billboard charts. The only thing that would have made it better would be including "Dance the Night" by Dua Lipa instead of a song like "Rock and a Hard Place". Just my opinion but other than that, the instruments go very well together! Thank you DJ Earworm for your hard work!

I feel like Dance the Night would have been replacing Need A Favor, which was less popular. Rock and a Hard Place and Something in the Orange charted high up the Billboard year end, but it was because both have stayed long there since mid 2022. But 2023 has been a confusing year for the charts, i can see why Earworm went so random with his list 😂

​@@wijayaretroclassic Yeah both RAAHP and SITO were in my predictions. That being said there were plenty of surprising entries IMO, and the two that really caught me off guard were Need a Favor and Lavender Haze.

​@@wijayaretroclassicYes, that is true. RAAHP did pretty well on the charts, but there were some years where DJ Earworm would surpass certain songs. For example, "Wasted on You" lasted 52+ weeks on the chart but was not included on the 2022 mashup. I know RAAHP performed well, but I don't think it was necessary, especially since it was only used for like a second. I was surprised to see Need A Favor as well. But Dance The Night did pretty good on the charts and was a highlight of 2023 for sure. Thanks for your response!

I thought he would have used Dance The Night or maybe even Ella Baila Sola as an instrument or something lol But all in all it was pretty good. I wish Vampire was used more. I predicted Vampire to be used as an instrumental in the intro or outro.

@@jesseluvsmashups ​Yeah I expected Dance the Night, Ella Baila Sola (despite the language difficulty), fukumean and I Remember Everything, and maybe Is It Over Now? and Loving on Me (the latter probably left for 2024). I was already expecting Vampire not to be used so much lyrically since it sounds like a difficult song to use (same for Kill Bill), but I also thought he was gonna use the instrumentals, specifically the riffs after the second chorus. I'm not complaining though, I really love this mashup.
