Thanks so much mate, great video! YES PLEASE, make an amazing video on how to categorize music and genres! :)
@meegasx78074 жыл бұрын
invulsion I would suggest going with folders by sub-genres and not getting too caught by categorising strictly. The use tags that work for you such as "melodic", "aggressive", "banger" etc so you can find a vibe you want quickly either within one genre or all of them combined. It's working out a way that works for you which can be tricky at the start.

I have 2 folders, house and trance as that’s what I play. If I’m just playing to myself I just open and folder and see where it takes me, if I’m making a mix or playing out I will make a new folder and add the tracks I want to play. Once I’ve finished with the folder I drag the tunes back into the main folder and delete the temp folder as I end up with loads of folders and tunes all over the place. It a bit like packing your record bag back in the day. Yep, I’m old 👴🏻✌🏼

My biggest lesson learnt when I did my first gig was expecting the dj equipment to be in absolute perfect condition .. The CDJs I used none of the hot cue buttons worked, the tempo fader had a volume fader on it, master cue button didnt work, the time effects knob had come off, and to top it off the screens were very glitchy For me being my first gig this was the worst case scenario and I freaked out. The set i played was absolutely horrible, however thankfully, I was invited back a month later to play again on the same equipment and absolutely killed it. So be as prepared for the worst as possible

Those negative feelings/ experiences you mentioned (breathing, looking down, half-empty,etc.) resonate with my very own experience. on the same evening I did my first set infront of friends which I planned down to every second, I played the same set about 2 hours later with incredible relaxation, fresh ideas mixing up the prepared list and suddenly an almost empty room turned around into a few friends dancing. Now I'm an Ok-ish DJ teaching a friend of mine how to DJ since 9 weeks. Thanks to this video, I now know how to prepare her! I tried to explain and motivate her , but now you taught me (as so often) a new way of motivation, security and how to unleash the superhero in her! I need to thank you for being so full of joy in your videos. just watching/ listening you explain is .. priceless! thank you!

This reminds me of a time I was playing a student gig, the crowd was warmed up and the dance floor was full but I kept getting asked by a couple of girls for My Chemical Romance. I kept saying me it won’t work but maybe later. They kept coming back and one of the girls said everyone would love it. I was playing house at the time! I loaded oat and thought this won’t work but seeing as they asked so many times I played it. I’ve never seen a dance floor clear so fast in my life! No matter what I did after I couldn’t get it back to were it was. You live and you learn but it still haunts me to this day.... 😭 keep up the good work ✌🏼

Haha thanks for sharing, I feel you and I think many DJs have and this story sounds way too familiar to me. The truth is my partner requested Nine Inch Nails and I managed to incorporate Closer as it has a beat I could mix in, but I had to return to the initial vibe of the party.
@stuungar33903 жыл бұрын
Yes, those experiences are widespread, lol I had a large energetic crowd dancing to a jive master mix, when a girl asked me to play a song I'd never heard of, was about to listen to it on headphones, when the sweat dripping of my finger caused a double click and abruptly played some god awful, depression on steroids whinge type music Dance floor cleared. To top it off, the DJ I was filling for, came shortly afterwards (his Gig had been cancelled) sat behind me and just criticised. Ended up losing the fanny (girls) had about 300 blokes standing around drinking, beer sales went up though, on the positive side lol

@M P Personally I use the rating system to sort by energy level, I think 5 steps is just perfect for classifying everything. Then obviously everything by genre and if you know your library you should be easily able to find stuff you need. Whenever I teach my friends a little of what I'm doing they all seem to intuitively understand it so I guess it's not a bad system

I recently came across your channel and it inspired me to get out all of my old equipment. Two 1210’s and the original Technics mixer from the early DMC days. They haven’t been used for around fifteen years so you can imagine my horror when running into problem after problem. Tonearm skating, height adjustment wheel seized, intermittent wiring, crackly mixer pots to name but a few. A new mixer and full service on the turntables later and I’m back in business. I was only ever a bedroom DJ but you have brought me back to life in enjoying something again that I didn’t realise I missed so much.

Bro - I cold have used this video & our current tech way way back when I got started in the 80s and 90s - ESPECIALLY since back then we lugged “crates of records” - worst nightmares ever included: [1] preparing for a block house dance party, I’m loaded with Yaz, Jellybean Benitez, Cameron Paul set lists (my early heroes), but BOOM 💥 instead everyone wanted hip hop hard core gangsta rap a la NWA or DISASTER #2 outdoor stage no tent middle of august over 110 degrees Sacramento & every record I dropped heated & warped before I could beat sync the next one...great video great ideas great advice in this video brother!

Btw my back up plan was on cassette three x 90 minute sets, all pre recorded, 1)rap hip hop 2), danceHouse and 3) pop/billboard 100- I had an AIWA deck underneath the table with my amps and EQ stack and i played whatever tape in whatever 911 situation - then for crowd used the MIC to hype and effects 1000 and turntable tricks like scratch etc over the AIWA cassette tape with various vinyl / it only happened I think like 4x then 2 positive outcomes (1) I learned how to communicate with the customer better so I would be prepared and (2) I eventually was proficient On spin live across all three genres and new 90s and early 80s. A 20 year music spread that always unified any crowd with something for everyone

I used to have a DDJ-RZ running rekorbox and similar to your idea of loading a track on a 3 deck I used to use the preview function in the track library to scan through tracks really quickly, great function. Have a Denon SC5000 setup now and that has the same function. I'm very much a play in the moment kinda DJ whereby I might load up a track but then see the mood of the crowd changing, toss the loaded track and go with something totally different. I think you are absolutely correct you just need to follow you gut and if you have a track loaded up that your not sure about, toss it out and go with something different.

Love this video, your content is awesome man. Any DJ with significant mileage knows that feeling when it seems like things are going from bad to worse and your soul is sinking. And you've hit the key point: you need to turn yourself around before you can turn the dancefloor around. In regards to finding the next song and not knowing what to put on, an experienced DJ may have the opposite problem: too many tracks to choose from. In my experience, the easiest way to get around that is to place some restrictions on the selection: mix in the same key (or one above or below on Camelot wheel) or same BPM or same genre or same label or same year. Suddenly, you're left with 5 tracks to choose from rather than one hundred and it makes it much easier. Finally, getting a good USB makes a world of a difference, I just upgraded from a "standard" 3.0 USB to a SanDisk Extreme Pro and the difference is mind-blowing in terms of load times, giving me more time and less stress for track selection.
