playing to the crowd at any specific event is kinda the point, so rotating the bar and not leaving out any one specific portion of that crowd is good too... i can't imagine only playing one style of tunes for an entire night, and i don't to that very often....only when hired to play specifically one type of tunes, and even then I often sneak in a few that fit well enough to not get noticed as being way out of the ballpark, but ones that some might appreciate if the type of music I was brought in for isn't their typical style.... like a few southern/70s rock songs or blues songs on an all country night... one song I love playing at some point for Halloween parties, Tom Petty - Zombie Zoo .... you kinda gotta fit it in with the right song leading into it or follow it up with the right song, and I usually play it pretty early on, but... this year I did a "private" party at a local spot, and it wasn't a HUGE turnout for this spot, but was good fun... there were lots of parties and such elsewhere as well... but, I was asked to play 7 until 11 or 12, and didn't turn off the music until about 2am, and people had good fun... thanks for sharing your playlist! cheers

Hi Brian. Love watching your videos from the UK. Your advice has been invaluable to me. Just one thing though. The song Ghost town, by the Special's. Great song! But they are from Coventry in the Midland's. Keep up the great work, thanks ❤

I knew a successful promoter, he did a hip hop night and he told me that you need to play a slow song to get people to the bar to spend money every once in a while. That's how he stayed in a single genre. The venue is there to make money and he said they expect the dj to help in that way.

My company is called Boogie Time and the founder's theme song was 100% "I'm Your Boogie Man". Absolute anthem for him. Rasputin has made a big comeback.

Noob question for you. We play music for other people but everything we play often has to be filtered through our own sensibilities to determine if it works for the attendees and when/how to play it. So on some level you are playing music YOU think is good. But what you think is good may not be what the attendees think is good. I haven't done an event yet where I had to keep a floor filled and I'm a little nervous that my song choices will either be too obscure, too dated, or too out of sync with what people want to dance to. Curious what a veteran's thoughts are on choosing songs?

Think of it as playing songs you think your audience will think is good. That's empathy. Putting yourself in the audiences place & playing to them is what I believe makes us DJs
