This TTM finally allowed me wrap my head around the scribble/transform combo. Thank you!!

This was great!! I guess I never listened hard enough to his stuff to notice there are chorus scratches that use only one sound, and so could be performed in one take the way you did. My picture of his model is making up phrases from multiple scratches. PS: good work animating the notation thing, must have been brutal - owch
@BeatsBeneath3 жыл бұрын
Ha thanks! Yeah animating scratches isn't too fun. I've got a much better way of doing it now using illustrator. The hard bit now is working out the TTMs and if I'm even writing down the right thing!

I think I picked up somewhere once that he would ordinarily record his scratches into the sampler as bits and then trigger them from there, but I timed you @ 40secs, which is way above the sampling time of the MPCs at that time afaik. Long story short, I think he must have done it the way you did in one take onto the DAT

Heh yeah I never really knew either. I guess what you said makes sense though! I just did them all in one go because I could ::)

I'm trying to get to that level of speed on my forwards like you did at the end. Any advice on the platter control mechanics needed to achieve it?
@BeatsBeneath4 жыл бұрын
Try experimenting with different hand positions. The closer to the platter you are, the more movement you get (but the harder it is). Likewise, if you use one finger not 2 ,you get more of a pivot going. I tend to use 2 mostly, but it sounds cleaner with 1, but I can't keep it up long. I have the timing down now so that it feels like everything is moving in the same direction. If you watch both my hands, they're both going left at the same time. You can kind of 'force them' like I do in this vid, but they're actually better if you're more relaxed. It's just practice though dude, I spent a long time really practicing them to get them down. When I first did them, they felt super robotic and I couldn't get my body to relax whilst doing them.

@@BeatsBeneaththanks for your response. In your opinion, should getting something like that down be a higher priority than, say, learning how to flare? I'm a novice scratcher and I seem to be picking things up out of order. For example, I can chirp and crab better than I can stab and transform. I want to solidify my fundamentals before focusing on advanced scratches.

@@NOCDIB 100% mate! It will pay dividends later on. Most Beginners try and learn to flare etc too early on (myself included). You can always tell a scratcher who has worked on their foundations properly though. You can do so much with them if you know what you're doing. Work on your weaknesses I'd say. If you're not so great at transformers and stabs, do those all day till you've got them smooth and second nature. I've not done a vid on stabs, but I think its mostly just a practice thing and trying to relax a bit.
