It's not about living in the past it's about keeping an art form alive..

Fuck yeah Primo with the realest talk about Serato vs. Vinyl. Still hate digital DJ systems unless it's for studio work and you are sampling yourself. Even then you can get like 100 dub plates cut before you'd ever hit the cost of a a Serato. Still for studio work I can see it's instant-ness a useful feature.

Annual record sales increased in the past decade. I think Serato is partially the reason of that. Instead of moving on to CDJs and Traktor S4 DJs are still DJing with turntables.
@EStLouisAsassin8 жыл бұрын
I understand DJ Primier's point. There are certain experiences that DJ's should be able to relate to in the DJ art form since it's inception. 1000 seems like a lot, but it's not that many if you are really into your craft. Professionals in any field respect peers that pay dues to get their recognition / props. In the digital era, you really don't know who's really serious about the music because people can just buy some mp3's and say I'm a DJ without paying dues or have any idea about the classic DJ experience. It's kind of like someone rapping about the hood without spending one day in the hood. That's not authentic. If some people are so butt hurt by his analysis, maybe adding the word digital in front of DJ will help clarify things. Since the 1st DJ's were analog, no further distinction is needed within the DJ title.

As far as I can remember Premo used Serato, aka digital vinyl emulation, on the BET cyphers. I'm pretty sure he started using Serato on live gigs instead of real vinyls years ago after Jazzy Jeff convinced him.

+patcol82 I don't like using CDJs but they run Serato better than turntables (for variable club environments/booth setups/bass resonance pickup) and pretty sure that CDJ playing a lossless audio file off the CDJ/USB without Serato is probably utilising a better quality pitch algorithm considering the dedicated hardware inside the CDJ for the purpose of pitching. And there are many times I will prefer the audio quality of a well produced and mastered web audio release than a vinyl copy of the same being played on an average, sub par or even high quality analog playback system. There really are some GREAT sounding CD and WEB releases. There are some VERY BAD sounding vinyl releases (and a lot of bad vinyl setups in the world). However I am a luddite when it comes to mobile computing. Give me ethernet cable (NO WIFI) and a computer that stays at my house for using the internet. For phone communication, give me a landline or a mobile that just does that, along with text. Mobile internet? Death of the world as we know it imo. I like having the restriction of only being able to access it while at my designated office and via wires, not radiation pollution spread across the world, masking the natural resonance of the Earth aka the Schumann resonance..

+TheGreySea2 woah woah, waaaay too much greek for a rookie lol however, as a "screw" dj, I like vinyl for the old popping sound and the feel of the record (I use ns7s). CDJs do have excellent quality but I like the rotation of the record when it comes to timing my scratches hence why I went with ns7s.

If Vinyl records was the only thing we had now days then everybody will be rocking vinyls. Its not fair that the old school djs judge the new generation just because we didn't go thru the hassle u guys went thru. Turntables were the only technology you had and caring crates was the only way to bring the records. Now days we have cdjs, dvs, mp3 controllers, I don't see 1200 in clubs that much now days I only use them when Im in my studio practicing or recording a mix tape.
@Maftiosi12 жыл бұрын
I think you're right, but flip the coin: Today only a few albums are released on vinyl and I am sure that DJing wouldn't be as big without serato, as it is now. The record-industrie is dead, nearly nobody produces vinyls any more. I also do not like this, but I rather prefere timecode-vinyl than compact discs. And don't forget: Rane did a very good on Serato, it feels like a real record.

I respect his viewpoint although the number '1000' isnt so important. I probably had 1000 records, half of which I sold in my time hehe.. but anyway, I do respect the 'serato must be earned' ideology, however it really doesn't count with Serato DJ nowadays (with a sync button) as it's pretty much becoming the same as Traktor (more focus on ease to 'sync' instead of vinyl/DVS beatmatch - at least SDJ has the option to REMOVE sync still...). Mostly though, I find it hypocritical that he released a half music / half timecode Serato pressing picture disc.. that has some awesome tunes on it but comes with a whole lot of surface noise throughout all the music tracks.. just to make it a pretty picture disc. If either he really didn't like Serato probably wouldn't make a Serato product, if really loved vinyl so much would probably choose a plain black Serato pressing over something that looks really cool with his face on the records. I'm not sure if ALL the pressing had the surface noise issue but my copy sounds pretty bad (it's just a given that coloured/picture discs are NOT for quality audio, they are for collectors/looking cool...). Another thing to add to this is how Jazzy Jeff just did a Serato pressing, but while he did it right, as he put no 'real' music on it it's kind of a silly purchase. I mean, he designed the cover. But inside is a record with two sides Serato control tone, no music. And it's plain black (so it will last longer / work with Serato better and for longer than coloured or picture disc vinyls, due to better quality black vinyl substance over coloured vinyl materials), so that's good, but why pay extra for a fancy cover?? I mean it's nice and all, but since you're not actually getting any Jazzy Jeff on it..... you're paying a nice surcharge over the standard vanilla 'control vinyls' or performance series controls, just for a special cover. MAYBE there is something to it, in that they are a specific thickness that Jazzy prefers (some DJs prefer to control with thick vinyl, some thin, some in the middle) but otherwise, I don't see the point. Just something I felt I should raise since it was only a few years after the statements in this video that Premier decided to do a pressing for Serato.. kind of telling people not to use it, but hey if you do buy my vinyl for it haha.

Here is a secret: Flex, Premier, Flash, Capri Red and even Jay successfully suppressed and controlled the path of the dj. They used thier influence to keep the Dj culture from developing by making fun of and dumming down the likes of rob swift, Steve d, roc raida and the whole scene by referring to them as "flashy DJs". They only was worth a little when they held down the u.s. In Dj battles. If the skills of these guys came out in the 90s, the Dj of today would be 1 million times better.

if your goal is just to have a tons of songs on a little usb drive or hard disk, yes it is reliable, however, if your laptop hangs on you or you have a corrupted USB or HDD, then say goodbye to your gig, not to mention if one of your Serato vinyls got busted and can't play Timecode then you're one hand man.. In the real vinyls, break one if your records you still have tons of them to play with, plus the sound quality no matter what song you play it will be the best experience of audience ears.

@mikejackson58810 жыл бұрын
I don't agree with some of the things Premier said. Maybe Premier was smoking a crack pipe and that's what came out of his mouth. If you know music and can rock a party, you can be a great dj. Owning more than a thousand records is not grounds to be a great dj. I know lots of people with a 1000 copies of vinyl. Who is the authority to say who is a dj or not. Point me in that direction and I will consider who that is. Technology is here to stay and those who don't like it will be left behind. I love my 12s and will have them until I die, but don't knock new technology and improvements to the craft, again you will be left behind. To each his own in rockin a party or whatever event you put on. There are all types of djs out there and to say who is or not a REAL dj limits our craft! Now that's enough of my soap box...Peace to all DJs out there ONE LOVE!!!!

And there are plenty DJs that did everything Premier said... and still suck. I respect him and believe in some of what he said, but to say you have to have 1000 records and carry them up/down stairs or you're not a DJ? Whack. I got rid of my records because what's the point of having that much stuff you won't use anymore? I get the nostalgia and I kept all my exclusives and gems, but not all of them. Why have doubles of records when I can just download and have doubles? Very few records get pressed anymore, so what about DJs who weren't born in the 60s and 70s? So basically, if you were born after the 80s you're not a DJ because you don't have money to spend on a ton of records or because you rather not lug 400lbs of shit around. That's stupid. I've got a ton of records I use for sampling or when battles are all vinyl or even all vinyl sets I perform.... but to say someone isn't a DJ because they don't have the luxury of having 1000+ records is bullshit. There are DJs who've been at it for 20+ years and get their asses handed to them by DJs half their age on vinyl and serato. I respect the DJs in the 80s & 90s who did all vinyl but the majority are just like the majority now... they did it because it was a fad and they only did enough to be considered a DJ. Most didn't scratch, beat juggle, or anything other than the basics and some of them couldn't even master that. Whether it's vinyl or serato, the techniques are the same. Scratching, beat matching, choosing songs, reading the crowd, mashups, blends, and whatever else. There is a lot more to DJing than having 1000 records.

+Dj TeeOh Vinyl purist DJs are kinda funny really. I like the analogy of how the original rotary mixer and belt drive guys see slide faders and direct drives decks as cheating, back in the day.. then you got the original DVS crew looking down on Virtual DJ and Traktor sync, then you got the CDJ crew looking down on the new controller crowd.. want true analog go grab some sticks and find a log to beat on xD
@Ninja_Gaijin8 жыл бұрын
+Dj TeeOh he didnt say carry 1000 records though, he said 'lift speakers out of the club when your homies all there at the start to grab the free drinks but gone by the time you need to be packing up..' or something to that end. Which is technically not entirely about DJing, more about putting on events, which the oldest DJs HAD to do to get shows, since there weren't clubs backing them when they were birthing the styles.. so you had to carry your turnies, speakers, amp(s), cables, records for the night (generally a few crates depending on how long playing.. at least 1-2 crates for an hour worth of possibilities) and lights, the table to set up on, could go on and on. I was lucky I got to experience all that at a young age putting on band shows... it really does help to know your equipment back to front. If you just buy a controller and rock up to shows and never figure out the differences in mixers, speakers and setups where you play, you are missing out on a lot of stuff you really should know
@Ninja_Gaijin8 жыл бұрын
+Dj TeeOh One thing pro Serato I like to add though (and the reason I use it) - SPEED. I used to do the same things pretty much on vinyl - I'd put sticky tape for cue points, write the BPMs on the labels etc. But now I do it with tags and on the computer. It takes a lot less time and effort (as well as to utilise in dark club environments at the actual club set, as well as in preparation) which ends up meaning more time to be creative. For me, I still value manual beatmatch (nothing worse than an automated/sync of miscalculated BPMs...) but I love that I am not fiddling around with my crate and record sleeves/liners to get to my records and that time lost putting the needle back to the start while beatmatching (if want to bar drop / double drop a specific section and you are using that drop to beatmatch with..) and taking records on and off. For me, that gives me more time to make sure the double drops are ready to hit and less time with a track playing by itself. For me, the John Cage definition of DJing is the most 'true' - to play two or more pre-existing pieces of music at the same time and have some new, third thing come out of it, from the 'thing in the middle' that is created when two things are overlayed (he was one of the first blending/creative DJs, in the 40s, dropping a Mozart and Beethoven record in a blend, as well as doing cartridge noise experimentation). To that end, I feel bad (and hate seeing) DJs play a tune then fade to the next. It's about riding two tracks for as long as it works / sustains 'wow' factor and keeping that 'third thing' train moving on an interesting journey.. Serato can really help that. I love how it helps me keep my 'tracks per hour' average speed/pace of dropping new tunes higher than ever before..
