DJ Solitare's Retro Goa Explorations, Episode 54 - Pleiadians: Time Dilation

The 54th in my Retro Goa Explorations series of videos in which I present some of my favourite 'Goa Trance' tracks from the '90s.
In this series, I go back to my first experiences in the Goa Trance electronic dance music movement starting in late 1994, drawing upon my recollections of hearing specific music at certain events and using my classical music background explore the elements that I believe make these tracks so great.
The current series of episodes covers tracks I first encountered in the '96-97 season, this one featuring an epic production that I got my hands on just before I moved to London in September 1996 and that is forever etched in my memory of that formative time: Time Dilation by Pleiadians. After I present my observations while listening to the track, I then give a few closing comments before sharing the music without any commentary.

🌌 This track was always my favorite and I mostly listen to it with my headphones on, more than dancing. I mostly automatically start imagining Galaxies while playing it, particularly the image of Crab Nebula keeps coming to my mind for what ever reason. After countless listens, I thought I knew every twist and turn, but your analysis opened my ears to a whole new dimension. The grandiose structure, the cosmic soundscapes, the tension that builds and builds-it’s truly out of this world. Your insights made me realize just how mind-bogglingly intricate this track is, and I can only imagine the awe a first-time listener must feel, after your breakdown. Mark thank you for doing this and waiting eagerly for the next one.

One of my all time favorites, not just for the structures, textures, and harmonies that you point out but also its surprisingly restrained BPM. I find that the CD version is a little hot in the mix but the vinyl mastering is actually feeling less crunched. And as to what you do after that.... more Etnica/Pleiadians/Crop Circles, of course =)

you clearly know this track and basically the tracks you talk about really by heart, you almost take words out of my mouth which were my thoughts for so many years. and the fact you're unapologetically stoned at the same time in a good way makes it a great video. you clearly know music, and not only trance music, and its cool to hear someone like you talk when most of the scene are narrow minded folks.

Hey Mark, Timothy here. I’m still in Arambol, here in Goa. Welcome back from Goa. It was so amazing to meet you and dance to your incredible set of Goa Trance at the Ver festival early February. Peak experience of the 3 day festival for me. Glad you survived your inaugural initiation into India and more specifically, your 1st visit to the motherland of Goa Trance……..Goa!! So great to see Time Dilation as your first review after Your trip to Goa. Very fitting in so many ways. I’ve certainly been vibing on Time Dilation lately. At the beginning of January, I purchased my second vinyl copy of The Truth of Communication comp to go along with my CD copy and my promo vinyl copy. So why am I buying all these copies? Well, first of all, Time Dilation, as you have accurately expressed, is another one of those rare, perfectly composed Goa tracks that does, as you say, leaves you wondering how is it even possible to follow that. How do you follow Mozart? It’s like that. Fortunately there are a couple handfuls of perfect tracks in the Goa Trance catalog that have this vibrational immensity, so all is not lost. The biggest challenge is refinding them in the collection. When I do find them, I’ll let you know. The second reason I bought my second vinyl copy of The Truth of Communication is because Time Dilation is only found on Vinyl on that comp. Hard to believe I know. The Pleiadians did not release Time Dilation on vinyl. So…. My second vinyl copy is waiting for me upon my arrival back from Goa in April. Time Dilation, for me, is definitely in my top 50 Goa Tracks of all time and it would be difficult to not put it in the top 25. Your review of Time Dilation is spot on and I really appreciate your continued discernment and ability to detect and express the refined nuance that are in these great Goa Trance tracks. Regarding your take about Goa Trance events needing open access to the stars. You are right and I’ve been looking around here in Arambol for a smallish venue on the beach where something, as you suggest could take place. Goa Trance, to me needs a more connected, intimate and curated space and atmosphere for the full experience of the music to actualize. It’s really not festival music. I’ve been thinking about that a lot in the past few weeks. Thanks again for your review……..and for your set. Cheers…..
