DJ Tutorial for Better Mixing - Don't Wait Too Long to Mix Out!

A tutorial on smoother and more seamless mixing by starting to mix out earlier, not waiting too late until the track has resolved to only a beat.

I don't think one should be following these tips. There is no right or wrong, obviously, but there are mistakes and I think there are quite a few of them made here. First thing: a dj can and should learn how to create tension even if he mixes in late by using cuts and creating fake drops. When you do b2b with someone you don't have the luxury of controlling how much of the track is left to you. Some djs play nice and have shorter mixes but some actually take their time and give you the last 3 minutes of a track when they hand off the headphones and decks to you. So if you need more time because you want to mix in early you can kiss bye bye enjoying a b2b set. And those are actually the most fun to play. Also, in a club situation you will rarely have enough time to plan stuff. There is loud noise, pretty girls coming to talk to you or people who just want to talk to you, there's alcohol and whatnot involved. If you are disconnected from that because you need to take time and mix in early you lost 80% of the fun of being a dj and you're just beating yourself. Put yourself in uncomfortable situations, learn how to exit nicely from them and that will make you a better dj than these geeks on youtube teaching you how to perform robot moves on the mixer. Secondly: I noticed in both of your scenarios that you lost energy in the low ends when transitioning the tracks. It's not a good idea to do those full mid and low cuts as the highs will sound too washed out and metallic when you bring them in. Also, changes in the low ends are very noticeable on big sound systems. Small mistakes on small sound systems sound very dramatic on big ones. Know that there is a connection between the frequencies and bringing in more highs can actually enhance some mid frequencies and low frequencies on the other track. Or worse, it can actually decrease them. There is no written rule on how a mix should be made but one thing is certain: the more you cut in the EQ the more work you have to do on the mixer and the more noticeable the changes in frequencies are not to mention that every cut in EQ you make alters the output volume of the track. A pro mix is learning how to maintain constant output volume while the frequencies blend in nicely and one song transitions to another. I cannot stress out how much it matters to maintain a constant volume, that is what is going to set you apart from the "djs" (notice the quotes) who use a technique they picked up in a youtube video and the ones who actually use their ears and develop their djing style. With that being said I would say that if one wants to become a dj start by practicing at home for nights and days. Forget about traktor, serato and other shit software. Buy the cheapest CDJs that support rekordbox, buy a cheap 2 channel mixer and learn the basics. Learn how to use your ears and the EQ, record your practice sessions, listen to them over and over and be your own worst critic. And most importantly: don't hurry up to be on that stage, don't kill it for the rest of us, djs who are present in the club and want to have fun ok? // rant over :)

no need for pitch sliders i see ;p... most music is made of bars that will come in sections ( 4 beats are one bar ...1...2...3...4..) theyll prob come in 8 , 16 , 32 section etc.... youl prob be able to hear a new stab , sound , vocal or something get added or taken away at the point throughout your tracks . as u get to know your songs youl get used to if the a 12 bar or 24 before the drop and if they are very busy with lots of melodies and sounds in the middle section etc.....what ya do is slot ya nice next tune that got a 16 bar into before the drop into one that got around that in the section after its done it main bit everyones loved it and ya wanna hit em with the next drop befor things cool .... as the song your done with is playing its bit leading up to the second little break before the end section your new tune will be building up to its first break in the same sort of manner . one may lose a sound like a voice or bass note or gain a string or lead as the build up or deconstruct...... either way where you have chosen places that arent too busy (or chosen a nice simple dub to blend in to that tune with lots of melodies and just wont shut up so mix dont go OTT and sound awefull ) it will sound right like they are changing just right for each other and where you know its a 16 bar section (ish) on both they will go out and drop in at the same time like clockwork so instead of the 2nd break of ya first trackthey just got dropped into the new tracks first big drop etc and it all just sounded like it was ment to.. I WROTE THAT AS retarded andd simply as i could for a begginer , im sorry , after a few years u will litterally shape the songs and frequencies to do and go in as you please like a god , it just takes real practise in the hardest most rubbish club and sound systems to make u ready for dam right anything and still sound good lol remember not all are like this musics diverse that why its wicked but basically for a learning routine find some basin generic tunes watch the busy sections too much is too much sounds bad , if its missing a bass give it one with a dub next track.... if its a dub and you got a track where she sing nice in the intro and you know whats coming when ya hear the tune the fit it in next track over that dub that playing. blends together and youl be safe hopefully. if not just keep trying again n again trial n error . its the way 16 bars 8bars 16 bars 8 bars 16 barsintro ... break .... middle..... 2nd break ... outro slot em together , even edit how many bars on serato rekordbox and make the songs fit lol .. times have changed there ;p

Great advice and video. I've djd for over 25 years and underground music so have always used long transitions. Its how I learnt in the 90s here in the UK. So your video is spot on and new djs should take a lot from it.

Great video. This technique works great for progressive, deep, trance, techno, and tech house where you will find melodies and sounds that work well together (in key) and don't clash. Vocal house, soulful, afro, etc. you will need to wait until the very end in some cases (about 1:30-1:00 min) to mix in because you don't want vocals to clash or have too much going on when you bring in another track with a lot of elements. also, I did see a comment where coming in a little late to give new "energy" to the room is great too. every mix is different, every DJ has their own style so just have fun with it. keep the crowd guessing is always the fun part. The key is to always listen to the tracks once you purchase them. I purchase 10 to 15 tracks twice a week and listen to all of them before I select them for a set. It allows you to know exactly where to bring in another track.

That is where you extend your transitions into mashed up, original, unique ones.. The outro of any given tracks gives headroom for your own creativity instead of just doing the typical transition-to-the-next-track type of set..

I prefer to switch it up! There are times I would mix in late and there are times I will mix in after the second breakdown. I notice most NYC House DJs allow 2 tracks to play together. That's cool. It's your preference and how to music speak to you when you are playing. What you should not do is allow a track to run out of melody before you bring the other track in.

I agree with him it may sound good for the DJ to mix late because it is easier to EQ when there is not much colliding stuff. Dancers notice energy leaks and you will see the floor emptying very fast. Melodic techno and Deep house tracks need more energy regulating while mixing. Hardcore, trance psy and stuff like that tend to keep their energy levels very long so you can run them longer. But I that hi-hats tend to add to the energy and they are most of the time active on hi-energy parts. And they do not go very long. Listen to your songs when hi hats cease you feel it that the energy is gone.

I do agree with Arman on that. I am a House DJ so I do give myself on adv 2min before I bring in another track. That is not set in stone for I notice difference DJ's have difference ways of bring in tracks. Like most of the people on the comments agree, there is no right or wrong way but if you are starting out, I would use Arman's method til you feel comfortable in bringing in tracks earlier.

There is no 'always do it like this' in mixing, that's bullshit. Some tracks bang straight into each other, sure. But then there are some that need the break. Some you wait for the break down to mix, others you might even just use the build up and then substitute the drop. The name of the game is great track selection (of course), variety in those tracks and different transitions. If you just bang tracks into each other for an hour and they are all perfectly key matched phrase into phrase it'll start sounding boring as bat shit really fast. You seriously cant get hung up on key matching, especially if you aim to play to a crowd for an hour or more. Some tracks are great friends and you can bounce them off each other beautifully, some tracks don't get along but taking that contrast and putting it in the right place can be the difference between a good set and an amazing one.

Hi Armin, is it possible that certain genres are harder to mix than others? I am no professional, just really passionate about mixing and how it sounds - full on in 2006 -> when i used to listen to alot of mix sets. Now i do not have a demanding job so i am trying to set up and use my DJ gear when i can. I have been fidling with old tracks i have and new tracks and i have been trying to re-create pieces of sets i made almost 7-10 years ago. At the same time, i dont know if i can really mix well, but i belive i have the potential. Anyhow, i just wanted to know whether mixing general popular dance/club tunes which are 3-4 miutes long, are harder to mix than say trance which is 6-8 minutes long. I would imagine Trance and Progressive House is very very similar structure... i will try to get the tunes you have in the video and see if i can do what you did. I mix like , i am not sure how, its really self taught- but i dont know if what i do is right. I dont use the volume sliders, i use the crossfader... and i have a strange way of doing the fading, where i use the volume sliders also to assist in volume control. Not sure if i have asked 1 question here , but probably many different , apprecate whoever can reply - thanks.

The way I solve the problem of not knowing which song to pick when it's almost time is use mini tracklists for parts of the mix and build my tracklist as I go, adding and removing tracks as I see fit, using the side list in Virtual DJ. I know this can be hard with CDJ's or vinyl, and I and others are spoiled with VDJ, but this can be done in your head, or in a folder in your music files for mini tracklists or songs that you know go well together.

I really get what he wants to say. Starting from the point that youre a beginner in djing, you can feel intimidated by all the stuff you have to do in the right order, you don’t want to make any mistakes in beatmatching and mixing. It can easily happen that youre too busy first and miss the right point letting the new track fade in. Of course you can also make a good transition with a very late fade in, but what I can say as a passionate raver and dj beginner, it makes sense (or at least I prefer this) to give the audience that kind of break rather at the end part of the dj set. I really love to dance all the way through a dj set. I kinda think that this „early mixing“ makes the power of the tracks stay more present. But it also depends on how your set is built up, what feeling you want to transport, . . . I really like the way you describe your techniques and it definetely makes it easier for me to understand how all this works. It may not be the best for everyone, but for Techno I must say, it works very well. Even though you take a lot of time in your videos just to talk without showing any EQs, its a good tutorial for me. This technique works for house & most EDM, but it will not necessarily work for mixing Top 40 & Jimmy Buffett. Generally, it's easier to mix house EDM compared to shorter tracks with vocals throughout (Top 40 / Country / Oldies, etc). Great vid by OP, but keep in mind that techniques vary by genre & scene. This may be why you don't hear a hip hop dj doing a 2 minute mix.

Once I'm doing HipHop, RnB, Reggae, if the song is on for any more than the first chorus, ITS A WRAP, folks get bored and start to drift. Gotta power mix like crazy. In an hour I can go through like almost 60 songs EASILY. Is exhausting, hahahah

DJ Sure Shot yes is very exhausting but after the party I feel like I did a great job cos I never plan my sets I have like 1Terra of music on my laptop and only read the crowd if I see people get bored I play two more and than change style of music. I never got time 2 talk to bizzyy searching for the next song. I play 6 to 8 hour sets. Wasted every weekend 😴

I'm sorry but if a DJ waits until the end of the other track all the time, that DJ is tracklisting NOT DJ-ing. Yes sometimes letting the old track fade is a cool effect, is in fact a cool effect if you want to jump a few keys ahead, but bro, those DJs who you say are not EQ-ing next racks in, using the beats of another song on the other, or melodies on top of beat-oriented songs etc. layering even sometimes more than one track at the same time, they are not DJ-ing.

Ya I beg to differ. Firstly, my opinion reflects on what this guys is saying already. Second, a good selector who doesn't have technique never makes it to the world stage. Most importantly, A DJ is not serving anyone; he/she is the artist, she or he has the power. You either like the art or don't. It's completely subjective.

thats real , real djs who feel it are artists. somethings different . and its something you cant tach or learn , ive seen a million technical wizards who are literraly so clever and skilled its just degree level , but they absolutely just cannot do thing like someone whos got that artistic side, expressing shit coming up with something original , putting feelings out thru out , its crazy , if its off key and not supposed to work that way on paper but it sounds good and your hooked hearing it . chances are it came from the heart. not a sync button and a sample pack lol

What exactly is djing? The origins of “djing” came from radio disc jockeys that, let a song finish and play the next song. So there is that. I do believe that djaying has become for some an art form. Artists take different approaches to their own artistic expression. Sure you can use science and theory in your practice but there also has to be freedom of expression. This video takes a certain approach that may work for some but not for all. We can’t just put everyone in a box and say this is how you should do it. Where is the art in that. So to say something is not djing, maybe elaborate on your personal idea of djing, if you are saying something is not djing.

A J well i think what I said applies mainly to dancefloor djing and when you really want to lead a crowd and layering it does help with expression depending on how you have connected with the songs. I do take a different approach in my radioshow. Also the point of digital is also to exploit these abilities that come with it.
