I read last night, *Philadelphia soul* musicians refused to play on *David Bowie's 'Young Americans* ' album, recorded there. He was looking for a soul sound. One black soul musician who was big on the scene ("who shall remain nameless," said another Philly musician in this book), said Look, why should we give awhiteboy the secrets of our music ? A difficult question about not being co-opted. So Bowie got session musicians from outside. This was 1974. A year later Elton John recorded 'Philadelphia Freedom' - - so Philadelphia, a place I've only passed through switching airplanes, must have been the Place in mid-70s. This is from a 2019 Bowie oral history *RAINBOWMAN* - - another book to put on the request card at the *Norman Maslov Public Library* . We were crammed like sardines in a *propeller plane* made out of tin. I sat knees-to-knees opposite the stewardess by the *emergency door* . The engine rattled the tin fuselage & the sound reproduced - - & I mean Exactly reproduced, from the better ' *Alternative* ' version - - the intro sound of Simon & Garfunkel's ' *Big Bright Green Pleasure Machine* .' We were worried & distressed. When the pilot banked dramatically just for the hell of it, the wings aligned vertical with the ground a thousand feet below, & me & the stewardess leaned into the emergency door. Flying out of Philly, it wasn't soul but gospel music on my mind.

What particularly tickled me, before I boarded the Tin Machine, was the verbal agreement I had to give the desk in their cockamamie overbooking passenger scheme. I had to say "Yes" to the woman asking me: " *In case of emergency, will you agree to be of help to the other passengers disembarking first?* " When I saw they'd put me by the emergency door where the staff sat practically on the pilot's shoulders, I understood. They had conscripted me as crew to board the flight I paid for. For all I knew the pilot got on board the same way. Naturally I said "Yes, but of course" in my most believable English accent to get on my flight. And if there really had been an emergency egress? But of course I'd have bailed first out the emergency door, pausing only to say, down the aisle, " *SO LONG, SUCKERS!* " We could be Heroes!

Harry killer picks Prince was a monster live I saw him 4 times he stunned me all 4 his guitar playing is so underrated IMO. That Earth Wind & Fire That’s the Way is a must have one group I need to see live . Truly noted I’m definitely going to check out Billy Paul on your recommendation great tag Harry.

You hit it on the head with Billy Paul. “Me and Mrs. Jones is one of my favorite songs of all time.” I first heard it back in the 90’s on my favorite movie’s soundtrack which is “Beautiful Girls”. A great movie and soundtrack. That movie introduced me to The Afghan Whigs as well. Anyway, great tag!! I may have belting out Me and Mrs Jones the other night after a few drinks. Oh my goodness! That Stax oven mitt is awesome! Great to see classic soul albums and Billy Preston mentioned with the Beatles. So good to hear someone note "When We Get Married" by the Intruders. Another wonderful soul group.
