Part 31: • Teddy Riley on Aaron H...
Part 1: • Teddy Riley on Growing...
--------
In this clip, DJ Vlad asks Teddy Riley a very compelling question about R. Kelly and if he believes that the three-time Grammy winner ripped off Aaron Hall's persona, bald look, and vocal style back in the early 90s. To that Teddy says, "R. Kelly saw the shot and took it...you can read between the lines." He goes on to explain that much of it had to do with the fact that R. Kelly's manager at the time, Barry Hankerson, worked with his former group, Guy, first. From there, Teddy states that R. Kelly is one of he greatest R&B artists ever and that he wishes he could erase his sketchy past.

Aaron Hall's look and style was a moment. Once New Jack Swing started to fade a lot of those artists who were known for that sound couldn't transition to the next phase of their music development. R. Kelly was a chameleon similar to Michael Jackson so he was able to adapt and eventually conquer whatever sound was relevant at any particular time in the music industry. He will be greatly missed.

@@Lmiller83 Stop 🤣 The second guy Album was trash. What songs have replay value other than Let's Chill and I Wanna Get With You, which was mostly sung by Teddy? Not knocking Teddy's tracks, they were great, but Aaron wasn't anything special. Any competent male singer could have did those songs, as Teddy proved with Black Street. R. Kelly's first two albums, 12 Play and Born into the '90s sounded nothing like Guy. They weren't doing no Jack Swing. Aaron Hall definitely influenced R. Kelly. But the originator of that style to me is Stevie Wonder. Maybe it's someone before him that did it that I'm unaware of. But that style can be heard in Stevie's song "Love Light in Flight" from about the 3 min mark on. Then Charlie Wilson's style is somewhat influenced by that style of Stevie Wonder. An example of this is Zapp and Roger "Computer Love". At around the 2:45 mark you can hear Charlie with that same kind of trilling mix of forceful and soft tone notes. Then Aaron seems like he took some of that style from Charlie and applied it to his repertoire. Guy "Piece of My Love" you can hear that similar style around the 3:15 mark. But R Kelly came with almost the same kind of tone and cadence as Aaron. The beginning of "12 Play" seems like Aaron Hall could of sang it. Couple that with the look, and it seems he was really trying to mimic Aaron. But Kelly only used that as a springboard and was talented enough to hold his own with his style. Songs like "The World's Greatest", Ignition", "Fiesta" and many others showed that. Like Teddy said; sad he was such a talented but flawed individual.

Trey is good bruh lol .. he challenge Kells to put out better music, and the challenge was accepted gracefully. Trey was a RAPPER and signed as that before they rerouted, and tried to push him as a full on singer. Once he dodged the end of the Thug n B era, he was solidified. He never was a big seller, but he's remained relevant by at least having charting records when he releases. He's nothing like Kells, and tbh I've never heard any comparisons made or resemblances. Teddy Riley is correct, R. Kelly straight up took Aaron Hall's entire style. Just go listen to his music in the early beginnings, they sounded just alike. The musical artist JOE, also adopted the Hall style, go listen to his first hit songs. In fact, go listen to Jodeci, they did the exact same thing, took the Hall style as well. True fact, Kelly tried to ruin Joe's career, even telling DJ's across the country not to play his music, and that if they played his music, not to play his. This has all been documented. Kelly threatened those that played Joe's music, because he was THAT good. Aaron Hall had the voice and sound artist were duplicating. Jodeci, Kelly, Joe, all adopted that same voice, replicating it to making major hits.
