Ren has a good write up in the comments about losing his friend Joe to suicide 13 years ago, this song is about him. Ren was contacted by a mutual friend that Joe was on the bridge...Ren ran to him but was too late (Joe's body was never found). From this song, and the other tribute "For Joe" you can really hear Ren's pain, and I think ongoing guilt he may feel (can especially be heard in his song "Suicide").

Ren's childhood friend Joe, jumped from a bridge. He was depressed after 2 heavy breakups. Ren got a call that Joe was on the bridge and ran to try and stop him but got there too late. Joe's body was never found. Six montgs later Rens other friend Callum died in an accident. Those 2 events gave seriously impacted Ren and his music is heavily influenced by them. The freckled angels album is named after Joe. And several tracks by Ren speak about this. And recently Ren made a piano track that's for Callum. You should check all of thise out.

This song is incredible and it can be read at many levels as you said, because it speaks to our hearts. As many already said it's about one of Ren's best friend, Joe, who, sadly, passed away in a terrible way when he and Ren were still 19 (I think). Ren lived nearby the bridge where Joe died. He received a phone call late at night from a mutual friend saying that Joe was calling them, saying he was going to jump. Ren ran as fast as he could, while trying to call Joe on the phone, but midway he received the unavailable signal. When he arrived there was no one there and Joe's body was never found because that's a place with a very strong water flow. But this song also gives you the perspective of someone who has lost themself, who can't remember how they used to be before. I think everyone, sooner or later, happens to feel like that. But there's also this vivid description of how you see the world around you when you have a psychotic breakdown: bruises on the walls, he sees bodies on the floor, he talks to the dead... Again my view on the line "have I lost the Mida's touch" might describe the sensation that you feel when you lose your youthful sensation of being invincible and life beats you to a pulp. For Joe is a beautiful homage to this friend, a mashup of the last part of Su!cide and Freckled angels (both dedicated to Joe) and a third new song that connects the other two. Every time I listen to it I end up tearing up because it's really heartwrenching. Moreover you get to hear Ren's beautiful singing voice live. I think you still haven't heard his full potential but, even if I like his rap songs, his singing is on a whole another level

This is so beautiful. Chalk Outlines is, as well. The songs about his friend Joe, are Freckled Angels, this one, Su!cide, and For Joe (which has parts of the other 2 in it). Ren has a ton of songs that will rip your heart out: Chalk Outlines, Depression, and Dear God are a few of them.

As someone else already suggested: Freckled Angel - Su!cide - For Joe is the order you wanna do. I personally would go with the official video for Freckled Angels and not for the live but both are awesome. The live was only 8 months after he lost Joe and he is so nervous, almost rushing through the song hoping to make it without crying You will absolutely love Chinchillas own music! Please start with Fingers (live)!

Hi! As you delve more into Chinchilla, you will find that she is a beast of a writer, producer, and performer in her own right - Ren’s female counterpart, or musical siblings, as they refer to each other. Their collaborations are co-written by Chinny and Ren, so calling it "Ren's song" is a bit of a disservice. As I understand it, only the last part is about Ren’s friend Joe Hughes. I think Ren has said that he wrote this one though, afaik it was too personal to collaborate on. But that doesn't take anything away from his awesome and talented Chinchilla is in her own right. 😊

@@ElleScamp - just to add that when HtbM was released on the 25th December 2019 (the original studio version) - the links published by Ren, Chinchilla and XVII (their management at the time) all link to a version on sp0t1fy that credits both Ren and Chinchilla as the songwriters. This appears to be the official release version, dated the 25th December 2019, that was uploaded via the Spinnup distribution service and is still accessible. Both Ren and Chinchilla asked their fans, shortly following the release, to support the track on 1Tun3s to push the song to the top of the songwiters chart under their joint names. Both artists seem to refer to the track in the plural when describing its ownership (e.g. "mine and Chinchilla's song", "my track with Ren", "our song", etc.). These posts can still be found on Ren's, Chinchilla's and XVII respective social media channels. Chinchilla also has images on her socials of her and Ren in the studio producing/mixing the studio track together as a teaser the day ahead of its release. The song is credited to both artists on its official BMI listing, which helps track royalty payments for music airplay in the States. As I understand it the live version, played here, was developed by Ren and Chinchilla a couple of years later on from the studio version.

For me, the whole song up to the last lines can be viewed from the perspective of the person planning to leave, or the people they leave behind. Then the very end comes together from Ren's perspective alone.
