UGH! I work as a “Cartoon Yourself” artist at my local park. People pick the cartoon they like and I draw them as that. It’s been my main income for two years which is GREAT but now I feel like I’m stuck haha.

Dude, you’re preaching to the choir! I have told young artists this for years! I was a professional, caricatures entertainer, called myself subway surfer, because I started drawing when it rains initially but that’s another story. I found that caricature was the fastest. Most lucrative way to make money immediately as an artist and although I was very good at doing lightness is doing cartoony style doing highly exaggerated doing semi portrait style. I found out though that you don’t have to be a virtuoso to make money on your Worst drawing day. You are better than your potential customers on their best drawing day! They look at us like we are magicians

Funny cause my first ever commissioned artwork was for Caricature Art posters for an event. I hand drew them then Vectorized them for various reasons you probably know print wise and biccity bam uncles sam i nailed it $$$ booyah! Now the road is filled with fantastically green grass and rainbows and butterflies 😂 nah still gotta hustle but I am loving that I took that step for myself and am now obtaining clients left, right and centre since then which was 2017. Newer to the You Tube scene but grateful for all these awesome clients and experience to get me to this point! I am glad the algorithm sent me your way because I always love following and supporting other artists! Love your video and will continue to view more! Have a great 🐰🐣 Easter! 🙏🏼🙌🏼❤️👌🏼

I like your strategy for raising quick money by drawing to profile caricatures. Can you really solicit people randomly like this? I’ve tried advertising, prints And have gotten shut down. What am I doing wrong?.

Thanks for sharing this helpful advice! As an artist, drawing people is hard to get it right. Drawing cartoons and animals are more fun to draw. But I still try to draw them to get out of my comfort zone. What's stopping me from trying is how can I get these drawings done in a timely manner? Will I be quick enough to do it? Will I be able to draw what the customer wants? How much should I charge? How many days should it take me to draw it? Should I charge per hour? Or charge how many hours it takes me to complete a drawing?
@DJCoffman2 жыл бұрын
Good questions! I do have some other videos that tackle how to set your rates. As far as speed, it comes with practice, which is why I encourage all artists to draw something every day’! Likenesses can be tricky at first but once you learn how to “see” and capture a likeness it becomes easier and easier. Stay tuned for future videos that can answer these specifically!

I love this idea and don't know why I haven't taken advantage of online platforms to sell my cartoon caricatures! One question though, if I book some caricatures, do I ask for payment upfront, half up front, or all when I deliver? What do you recommend?
@DJCoffman2 жыл бұрын
Yes! Try it! For bulk orders do half down. For single order caricatures, just put up a BUY now button and charge ahead of doing the drawing. offer a satisfaction guarantee maybe.

I’m not sure I would signup on any sites that sold the same thing. You may be surprised if you follow through and put listings up what comes through. You’d be better to build your own channels. As the video suggests you should start with your own network and grow from there.

Can you recommend the right brushes one can use to draw comic characters?
@DJCoffman2 жыл бұрын
For digital brushes, you might try mine at gumroad.com/comics - but traditional brushes you'll want to just do trial and error and test. The most expensive are not always the best for you.

When setting a time limit will a month per client be ok cause ill be honest my weakness would be hours to weeks and im not that fast.
@DJCoffman Жыл бұрын
It can work! I've done some jobs where I just negotiated the timeframes, even if I was a bit slower in a process. Having clear deadlines and schedules set from the outset really helps to set expectations. BUT... you should work on getting faster if you feel you're too slow.
@MCAP887 Жыл бұрын
@@DJCoffman Thanks for the advice bro really usefull to be honest, the only genre I'm working in being fast is character design in manga comic, I'm already fast on classical comic book character design, do you think there are some people who actually buy comic book characters from character designers?

How does your method translate to non digital portrait artists?
@DJCoffman Жыл бұрын
It can work fine, perhaps if you want to have them cover shipping. Also you can easily do it on zoom calls if you draw love. I have seen caricature artists offer physical drawings through the mail. Up to you on your prices or turnaround time
@TheSubwaysurfer11 ай бұрын
Sorry I’m commenting so much. I’m just so excited to find a like-minded cartoonist and you bring up tons of memories. I hope I’m encouraging other orders along with you. If you would live in New York City and control, likenesses hook yourself up with a local synagogue in New York City someone is always turning 13 BARNBAT mitzvah‘s are big in New York City. Because of the Jewish population. You do one party good and your name will get passed around more than a pack of smokes in prison! You’ll be busy for years to come.

I am just watching a year late. And though AI art was a thing a year ago, now most of these services u talk about offering people can do on their own now with an app and make themselves look like any animation style. Do you think it is still a valid strategy?
@DJCoffman Жыл бұрын
Absolutely! In fact, AI art makes HUMAN art even MORE SPECIAL. AI cannot replace "style". Also think of it this way, something that is HAND drawn, on paper, or having the "process" video of a digital file, it's just more special and human than anything "artificial" - If people are giving a gift, will they want to give something special, or something artificial? Would you give someone plastic flowers, or fresh cut and awesome smelling flowers? Cheers!

Does anyone have any suggestions for me? I have a four panel comic strip that's so far 366 pages, I have 16 parts completed and two colored. The dialogue is smart and quirky and the characters are like Garfield meets the Simpsons. I really think this could be made into an animated series possibly but I know nothing about animation. I just draw and add dialogue. Also, I'm not a digital person. The cartoon is drawn in black ink outline with colored pencil inside.

If I were you I would learn how to use Amazon KDP and self publish volumes there. Choose the 8x10 book option. You will need to do some formatting but then your work will be on a mass marketplace and more easily discoverable. A good start kzbin.info/www/bejne/rZzdnKOkhsSmbdUsi=0aPAbL4wQRfqKnkg
