@Hellkat99405 жыл бұрын
If I recall it's a play on the traditional German wedding vows.
@prophetzarquon5 жыл бұрын
I believe the official translation is 'You Hate Me'. "Du Haßt Mich" BUT 'ask' is "fragt", so tacking "gefragt" onto the end _can_ change the meaning, & it _is_ based on wedding vows: The translation I come up with is "You asked & I did not hesitate".
@ZenoDovahkiin5 жыл бұрын
@@prophetzarquon TL;DR: your final translation is wrong, it means: "You asked me and I said nothing." Also you misidentified which part of the song is based on wedding vows. Read on only if you care enough to have the mistakes explained to you in detail, else ignore. First off, "you hate me" is spelled "du haSSt mich". Double s, no 'ß'. Secondly, the song's name ist "DU HAST", with a single s, which can mean "you have me", but also is meant to be an incomplete version of the full sentence "Du hast mich gefragt", that's being built up to. The identical sound of "hast" and "hasst" is intentional, I think, not sure if we got official word on that. Thirdly, the infinitive of "to ask" in German is "fragen", "fragt" would be third person singular. Fourthly, no, it's not that gefragt _can_ change the meaning, it *_does_* change the meaning. It removes the ambiguity in the spoken/heard sentence between haben/hassen, "hast" is now definitely a form of "haben" (to have), even without seeing it written out, and "haben" ist not the main verb anymore, but is used as an auxiliary verb to form the present perfect tense of "fragen". The meaning is "you have asked me." Not "it _can_ mean that", the full sentence with "gefragt" at the end just *_does_* mean that, and no it is *not* based on wedding vows. The wedding vows are in the next line: "Willst du bist der Tod euch scheidet treu ihr sein, an allen Tagen?" is quoting wedding vows in a slightly shortened form, meaning "Do you want to be faithful to her until death parts you?", similar to the English "'til death do us part" vow. The real word play they do is later, when Till sneaks in a slight variation of the line, where "bis der Tod euch scheidet" is replaced by "bis zum Tod der Scheide", it's a bit subtle, you might miss it upon casual listening. "Der Tod der Scheide" translates to "the death of the vagina" (Scheide can also mean sheath, but that's clearly not meant here). So it could express the sentiment of the narrator to reject faithfulness or partnership with a woman who is not fertile anymore, or some such, interpret as you wish, this is where you can run wild with what could be meant exactly. Finally: "I did not hesitate"? Where did you get hesitate? "To hesitate" is "zögern", the sentece uses "ich habe gesagt", first person singluar (ich = I) present perfect of "sagen", meaning "to say", not "to hesitate". And no, hesitate is not something it sometimes means, it means to say, thus "ich habe gesat" means "I have said" or "I said" (literally the former, but you'd ignore that in translation because the norms or rules regarding when to use simple past vs present perfect are different between English and German, so "I said" is fine, hence I didn't criticise your use of simple past in "you asked me", it's not wrong). So yeah, really don't get where you're getting the hesitation from. Finally, you mixed up "nichts" with "nicht". nicht = not nichts = nothing So "ich habe nichts gesagt" is literally "I have said nothing", or if you want to be free, you could of course do "I didn't say anything", "I remained silent", etc, just don't do the hesitation line, that changes the meaning completely. Sorry for the text wall, no offence intended, I just don't like misinformation going around.
@ZenoDovahkiin5 жыл бұрын
@gblueslover2 Except everybody knows who heard the full song. :P The question the narrator is asked is a variation on German wedding vows. The narrator is asked whther he vows to stay faithful to the bride until death. That's the question. And the answer is at first nothing, then a clear *_"NEIN!"_* Hope that clears it up.
