Patrice was a child prodigy and in 1972 won a prize at the Monterey Jazz Festival. In 1979, she began to woo the r&b and dance crowd by releasing the excellent "Pizzazz" with its centerpiece hit, "Haven't You Heard", a song that is considered to be influential in the transition from disco to dance. Hell, even today this song is sampled!
Patrice Louise Rushen was born September 30, 1954, the older of two daughters born to Allen and Ruth Rushen. Patrice began piano lessons at the age of three and by the age of six was giving classical recitals.
As a teen she attended Lock High School and earned her degree in music from the University of Southern California. After her triumph at The Monterey Jazz Festival, she was signed to Prestige Records at the age of 17. After three albums with Prestige, she signed with Elektra Records in 1978. Her second album "Pizzazz" was issued in 1979 and spawned the club hit "Haven't You Heard" which went to #5 on the disco chart, peaked at #42 for two weeks on the Hot100 and #7 on the R&B survey.
It was a welcome change from the disco at the time with its jazz funk arrangement that favored the 4/4 beat that only added to it's power.

🌈😘Gorgeous remix of a fabulously delicious disco song from 1979! 45 years old and strong with beautiful vocals by Patrice Rushen and the gorgeous music to lift your spirits with this loving melody. She was playing piano at the age of 3!!! Thank you for posting!!😻👍👍

I like this song. I really, really like this song. Patrice Rushen should have the Top-40, and she came mighty close. It’s a good thing that DiscoCat found this record, blew the dust off the grooves, and refreshed it. It’s a good way to start my Labor Day weekend.

I remember this from 1979, it's a total timeless classic, still jammin' to this song, like it's '79 again, Patrice Rushen, must say this, she was and still a musical genius!!! This brings back memories from family gatherings, block parties, hangin' out in the Faimount Park, Belmont Plateau in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania!!! This Ol' Skool still rocks to this day, Haven't you heard!!!😎😎😃😃👍👍

The two most memorable songs of 1979 for me are "Haven't You Heard" by Patrice Rushen and "You Know How To Love Me" by Phyllis Hyman. Usually there's only one fabulous song I love a year. But 1979 I really got blessed. I wouldn't mind if this song were 19 minutes long.

What's so special about beautifully arranged songs, like this one, is how and when most R&B Radio stations would play them. Here in Atlanta, this song was played once a day on V103, and usually in the mornings, during the week. But on Saturdays this would play on two occasions, during the day. The Radio was our internet. I miss those days The Summer of 1979

@@brousswayne1 . Unfortunately, Alicia is another one that has fallen into the "media darling trap". I acknowledge her talent; but the industry has a tendency to over amplify certain individuals for their own benefit and profit. Decisions made in boardrooms have successfully been able to deprive the general public of an countless individuals with much to offer. In this new age of technology there is a bit more access to exposure for the many . So now there's also the chance trash rises along with the gems . And so it goes.....🙂😏🤔🙂

Picture it: Hollywood, 2010. A smaller oscar week party at an oversized and underused art gallery that had a spunky local band playing and saw Marissa Tomei ignore an obnoxious male companion (body guard? Agent? Boyfriend?) as she charmed the crowd with her magnificent smile. The DJ that night was an energetic woman of no more than 25 who had "Haven't You Heard?" rockin' the house to set the evening off right. #truestory
