I myself had a mother whose people came to this country (America) in the 1890’s from what was then the AustroHungarian Emipire which included essentially of Central Europe and the Balkans and the Slavic Countries. Nations come and go but cities do not. Today my grandparents were from four cities/villages in Eastern Slovakia and Western Ukraine. I never met any of my four grandparents as all four died before I was born. But I know that I have some gypsy blood running through my veins. My parents had a gypsy band playing at their wedding (as well as a western band - my father was Calabrian Italian. Every since I can remember I had had a passion for “Gypsy” or “Roma” music. GOD has blessed this 76 year old physician with the ability to play virtually all instruments. And I can read music for all of them. I deeply appreciate not only the LOVELY singing of our First Lady in the Barcelona Gypsy Klezmer Band but the expertise and passion of each of the band members. All are wonderfully gifted and have been blessed with the true Soul of the Roma People. By the time I was 22 I had studied and traveled in Italy, Greece, India, and in the early 1970’s also Iran. West Pakistan, Iraq, Lebanon and Palestine/Israel and Dubrovnik and then in Thailand and Hong Kong. I’ve met Roma folk in every country (except the Far East. A couple of decades later I traveled to Budapest with my then fiancée and their were the “real thing” in the restaurant nightclub including a player of a Schunder cimbolom ( which I later owned and played). When the very talented band members noticed the way I was admiring their playing (much much more do than “tourists” they invited me over to be closer to them. We experienced an instantaneous Beotherhood. “Somehow” WE know each other. In a musical instrument shop in Budapest I was looking at and playing some of the instruments. Now, I am somewhat of a multi linguist but I don’t know more than four words in Madyar/Hungarian and none in Roma. But as soon as I started tinkering with a zither-like antique instrument the elderly gentlemen (who were obviously pure Roma) immediately changed their general demeanor and having discerned that I was not one more tourist dilettante spent a couple of hours with me going over instruments and musical techniques. Somehow “we” know each other. When I was an intern at the Emergency Room at Saint Vincent’s Hospital on Seventh Avenue and West 12th Street in NYC in the mid 1970’s all of the young “Gypsy” young parents (who were generally hesitant to see doctors unless REALLY sick soon were bring their little kids but only to be seen by me! “Somehow” we understood and they trusted me. Similarly later as I studied more pediatrics but unfortunately life led me elsewhere geographically. I love the tremendous gifts that GOD has given to these “youngsters” in the Barcelona Gypsy Klezmer Band. It is good to see our First Lady pregnant at a time and still performing very seductively (I mean this in a very very Good way). They and many other Roma groups on the internet have so much to offer and share. My only mistake was not marrying a good Roma woman. Just for fun go to KZbin for Flamenco Sepharad Adio Querida (Adio kerida) with Gerard Every on the guitar. He was born in Morocco and has since studied and lied elsewhere and is a Sephardic Jew. One notes the similarities and the persecutions of the Roma and the Wandering Jews over the millennium or so. We our two peoples (the Ladino speaking Sephardim and the Roma can easily “cross over” the two musical traditions. Some of the Gypsy Street Musicians in Italy are phenomenal. When I was a boy growing up in semi rural Wallington NJ our streets where dirt. We had no sidewalks curbs or storm sewers. And I remember an elderly bent over Gypsy man with a grey donkey pulling his 30” grey round hand cranked grinding wheel to sharpens everyone sickles, hedge clippers scissor knives and axes etc. I essentially grew up in Rural East Europe only 10 miles from the Lincoln Tunnel! In the late 1940’s into the 1950’s. The language on the streets was Polish or Slovak or Rusyn. But our ours are in our music. If you study thff we life of the great French Gypsy Django Reinhardt (who only had two usable fingers on his left hand you will only understand him if you can think like a Roma. My hats off to our Brothers and Sisters in this band! May our people prosper and May the neglect and abuse and persecution’s stop! Yes! Millions of Jews died in the Nazi death camps, but so did the Roma snd certain Catholic Poles and peoples with physical and mental disabilities. May GOD bless and protect us! May the music never cease!!

The singer, musicians (Sandra Sangiao (expressive, joyful, voice, Spain), Mattia Schirosa (accordion, ltaly), Robindro Nikolic (Clarinet - Serbia/India), lvan Kovačević (double bass, Serbia), Stelios Togias (percussion, Greece), Julien Chanal (guitar, France), Vroni Schnattinger (violin, Germany)) are of course fantastic, talented! When the musicians suddenly kick in, we can't help but feel good! Lovely transition! I see a lot of admirers of her and her music. The music is 'gipsy' or 'roma' which differs slightly depending on where each 'tribe' or family is from. She is singing a song called dzelem dzelem which is known to the official national anthem of the gypsies around the world. Although her pronunciation of the lyrics are not all there she makes up for it with her beautiful voice. I myself as a gypsy am proud of her way of portraying the meaning of the song. Upre Romale and viva la gitanos.

I hope that my poor Spanish and Google translate get this right... Fue la legión negra la SS o la Crna Legija, la unidad de la milicia croata llamada la legión negra? Corrieron muchos de los campos de concentración en la región.

@@txncelt Do you mean that the black legion in the song refers to both the ss and the Crna Legija or the Crna Legija instead of the SS? cause i dont understand what you are trying to say
