I’m thinking about getting one what do you think are better meinl toca or remo?
@DjembeMaster Жыл бұрын
Haven’t tried a key-tuned Meinl, Tocas are usually cheaper and for good reason. My choice has always been Remo 🙂

I've found the the remo plastic skins to be more ringy than the Toca's. The Tocas sound more authentic (i.e. like goatskin) to my ear. The Remos are typically made fun of by serious djembe players in this city.

thanks bro got a 20 year old 14 inch djembe a few months ago I love it but bought a remo key on amazon, it's the wrench style but it already sounds so much better! appreciate you!

I bought one almost as long ago and never really played it much. I picked it back up recently and was wondering why no matter how I played it, every hit sounded like bass. Oh yeah, 20 years of stretching I probably need to tune it lol.

Can a drum head snap or tear from being too tight? How to know if it's too tight? I can't find videos on what a tuned djembe should sound like, or what an out of tune one sounds like.

UPDATE:: Big Fat Snare Drum ring I found on Amazon and it works Perfect!! If you don't have a 'DOT' what else can you use instead of the dot?

Duct tape 🦆

Any foam tape/strip. The bigger the piece the more it will remove the ringing.

Yes the thing I don't like with the syntactic heads is the ring irritates me.

Mine came with a 4" dot and a 5" ring also. Do they serve the same purpose as the small dot? Why doesn't Remo explain this in a little more detail on their card? Lol

The more drumhead surface area covered with dot(s), the more muting will take place. I'd be very chill with just experimenting - put on a dot, play, put on the second dot, play. Then compare which sound you liked more - remove a dot or add even more dots. If you don't want to waste a dot (by removing in during testing), don't worry - just use small duct tape pieces to add more mute whenever you feel like it.

I mostly play the 14” Remo djembe. Love it the most 😍

I actually like it tuned lower but I guess it’s much less “djembe” and more like a bass war drum if u do that
