The colleges once upon a time had an awful lot of power in cambridge, and in oxford too, they were in with royalty and as land owners were used to having their word treated like law, fortunately for the rest of society we moved on, unfortunately the attitude of some inside the colleges hasn't since those days, they are puffed up with their own importance, I saw it when I lived there and heard stories from many friends who went to different cambridge colleges, its an elitist place and to be honest outside the academic kudos and power that they have they don't have the influence in society they once had, don't let that put you off cambridge, its a lovely place to live just keep off the grass :)
