A switch problem at 96th Street led to this 2 train being rerouted via the 1 line to 242nd Street. To reduce passenger confusion, the train crew smartly changed the electronic signage of the train to the 1 line. Enjoy!

Glad to see a conductor and motorman who know what they're doing. A lot of times they'll switch 2s and 5s if there's an issue. Usually, it'll say, "This is a number 2 train running via the 5 line. But, a 142 on the 1? That's crazy!

Yes that's allowed. The trains are completely interchangeable (as far as the number lines go). As long as the train's length is not an issue it can operate in customer service on the line. If the train cannot get back to it's terminal, they'll use it where it is to run on another line to pick up the slack.

Transit Railfan That had to do with no service on the 2 and 5 from 3rd ave 149 to there last stops in the bronx due to disabled train at west farm/ tremont. That was around 7am which lasted around an hour which service was partially restored between 180 to dyre ave and Wakefield. Shuttle buses were provided for those affected stations between 3rd ave to 180 st. until around 9:30 to 10 am which train service resumed.

Karen Evans Not happening. The 2 and 5 trains will forever share cars, so having R62As (even two sets) will not work. Those two sets can be the difference between normal service and bad delays on the 2 and 5 lines.

Kevin B Unfortunately, if I remembered correctly, the r142s were supposed to go to the 3 line and the r62s were supposed to stay on the 4 line. Although the reason why I think the MTA didn't do that is probably because the 3 was a part time line and the 4 was an all time line, meaning that the 4 runs more than the 3 does. My guess is that the MTA is putting old tech trains on lines that don't run late nights or weekends and putting new tech trains on lines that run all the time.

Since the (2)(5) each has 34 sets of R142! Give the (1) Line 34 sets of R142's. Then let all the R62A from the 1 be free to the 2 and 5 lines. Then since its 17 Sets left of R142A's why don't they just give 7 sets back to the 6 line then keep 10 sets to the 4. Then give 20 sets of R142 to the (6) and most of the R62A from the 6 should go to the 5. That way the 6 can be like this. 20 Sets of R142 7 Sets of R142A 6 Sets of R62A Anyways i love seeing the R142 on the 1 Line

Have R62As on both lines and you will have delays on both lines from Brooklyn all the way to the Bronx. Do you even know how operations on the 2 and 5 trains work. Stop putting your needs over the needs of regular subway commuters in Flatbush, Crown Heights, both sides of Manhattan, Mott Haven, Van Nest, Williamsbridge, Wakefield, Morris Park and Eastchester. Also, sorry to burst your bubble, but NTTs on the 6 line will never happen (save for the 1 set they use from the 4). Mott Haven, Parkchester and Pelham Bay commuters know better than you.

jonathan chan History is the reason why. It used to be part of the Island, but the Harlem River was rerouted through a more direct route. For a while, it used to be an Island, but the old path was filled it, connecting it to the Bronx.

Nice catch and this line (1 train Westside local) definitely needs the R142 because the current trains it uses date back from the mid-1980s R62 & R62A which are now suffering breakdowns an example of this would be one train 96th Street Broadway to 110th Street Cathedral Parkway taking 20-25 min instead of 5-10 min if the R62A or R62 breaks down

​@@markgriffin2087 R262's aren't going to the (1) or (3) They're going exclusively on the Lexington Avenue line because they're getting CBTC first. While the (1) and (3) gets displaced NTT's from the (4) and (5). Lexington Avenue is getting CBTC followed by 7th Avenue. So while R262's are on Lexington, the R142 and R142A's will be out getting retrofitted with CBTC technology by then the MTA is gonna place them on the (1) and (3) lines and the (6) has to get R262's in order for CBTC so priority is definitely 4, 5 and 6 and of course anything the 5 gets the 2 shares as well For some people that doesn't understand. The R142's and R142A's that are on the 4 and 5 are compatible with CBTC but they have to be retrofitted. The R142 and R142A's didn't come with the technology they're 20 years old. While those are taken away to be fitted, the R262's will replace them (and are CBTC equipped with the technology off the bat). By the time R142 and R142A's are back, the MTA would've started working on CBTC for 7th Avenue. The important thing is here is that the R262's definitely have to be on Lexington. And the 42nd Street Shuttle is getting R262's as well. Remember, in the MTA the oldest trains don't always get replaced directly with newer trains. There's a lot more to it Lexington Avenue is the Busiest line in the A Divison. That's why the MTA is trying to get the second phase of SAS to 125th street to ease congestion over to Lexington Avenue. The MTA wants All R262's on Lexington Avenue (4), (5) and (6) lines for Lexington Avenue CBTC the (1) and (3) lines will get displaced NTT's from the (4) and (5) lines
