Riding the redbirds to Aviation HS from 74th street was a daily experience im the late 90’s. How crowded they were and the lights going out randomly for a couple seconds. I miss those iconic old cars

I'm always impressed when they can bring these treasures of the decades through lines that have been CBTC-fitted. How does the NYC Transit Museum make it so their equipment can run safely on the modified signaling system, or at least be picked up by it?

The NYC Subway’s CBTC system is capable of accepting non-equipped trains, as it still has auxiliary wayside signals. The signal blocks for non-equipped trains are somewhat long, but this is a non-issue on a weekend, such as when this was recorded.

@TiagoGomez-hb9te That's basically the space between trains. With classic fixed-block signals (like what we have on the San Diego Trolley), the blocks are defined by the distance between fixed signal points. Any time a train enters that block, it's occupied, and another train is prohibited from entering. Moving blocks are defined by the position of the train itself instead of fixed signal positions. Think of it like a personal bubble projected around the train, which other trains can't enter without tripping an alarm. Does that help?

@wlctransit7593 Yep this helps alot understandin CBTC, but I notice that trains accelarate and decelerate way fast and more efficently when riding subway lines with CBTC active. What's the cause of that?

@@TiagoGomez-hb9te That is most likely due to the Grade of Automation or GoA for short, and that's not necessarily dependent on the subway line using CBTC. Your train has preprogrammed instructions to accelerate and decelerate from one stop to the next, and the driver's only job is to control the doors and override the CPU if necessary. So assuming all trains ahead of you are far enough away to avoid a conflict, your train could just jump right into full acceleration as soon as the doors close. Since CBTC is more computer-oriented than traditional fixed-block signals, the on-train computers may all be programmed to accelerate sooner and faster to keep to the much tighter schedule which CBTC is designed to allow.

Non-equipped trains can safely and effectively run on CBTC lines, although it will result in an enforced separation between trains that is much larger than usual. On the 7 line, an 8-minute headway was running that day, so this posed no issue.

@@DJHTransport 2001-May 2003. When they were taken out of service out on 5/16/03, they were the last Main Line IRT cars in service, a month after the R33s left the 4. So the last Main Line Redbirds closed out on the 7. 9542-9543 appear briefly in Spider-Man, shot in Sunnyside in early 2001 during their time on the 7.
