I have to say as someone who has flown lots of drones I disagree with the idea of starting with low price toy drones. The higher end drones are so much easier to fly. Better stabilization, lower latency, longer range, better safety features, more power to handle wind. All those things can allow for new pilots to easily practice.

Thanks - much appreciated! Indeed, though, you can crop in pretty easily to reduce the FOV slightly. Alternatively as soon as you add a bit of speed, the props disappear. Not at all ideal for slow filming (without cropping), but fine for anything with some movement.

Love this drone. Yes, I've had a slew of self built and RFT drones, but there is no comparison. This is a polished and amazing product worth every penny, at least for me. Even for a beginner, you'll really have to try hard to crash this in normal mode. Yes, if you try hard enough you will, but just like driving a car, don't take unnecessary chances. When you consider you are getting a set of $600 goggles and a $200 controller, the drone is really not so expensive.

It's not quite a FPV drone with handling like a shopping cart and it lacks the camera usability/quality of other DJI drones... @Dcrainmaker 3 жыл бұрын
@@ghosttjr2 No, that's not true. Not sure where you're getting that from. As noted in the battery section, I was consistently getting about 12 minutes of flight time, in winter, flying at nearly 3x the baseline battery spec speed (roughly 100KPH, vs the 40KPH it's listed at...in summer). Undoubtedly, on a warm summer day that'll rise - as it always does for batteries.

Thanks! Yup, I think it's cool tech and I'd love to get my FPV acro skills better over time. Right now I've got a fair bit of precision flying fast and close to things, but less so with acro type stuff. I'm super interested to see the Motion Controller enable Manual mode (right now just sport mode was added in today's firmware, alongside the existing normal mode I showed). I think that's got tons of potential to really open things up.

Thanks! A lot of people start off on Betafpv products, something like the toy FPV Racing starter, which is great for understanding indoors or in your backyard. However, ultimately, I'd recommend picking up a controller and goggles and learning in a simulator. If you're ultimately planning on going with the DJI FPV system, then going to the DJI V2 googles makes sense.

@@prowlus but you'd still also have to buy the entire fpv set up for it?? And you're far more likely to crash the Emax... seems like if you're set on getting a DJI then you might as well start on one... DJI also offer the extra cover, so if you crash in the first year, they replace it... don't see how investing in an entire different fpv set up purely just to learn how to fly a 'toy' drone...

@RindoRob
@RindoRob 3 жыл бұрын
@@Dcrainmaker one step closer! Yeah I really think a manual mode FPV like this would that type of joystick controller could be a game changer in terms of "fly feel". Btw, did you notice the simulator feeling pretty similar to real life flying? I'm wondering if you get used to the simulator and obstacle proximity if you will be pretty good at gauging your distance between obstacles or if there is still some learning curve going into the real life thing.
@Dcrainmaker
@Dcrainmaker 3 жыл бұрын
@@RindoRob I'm still a bit mixed on the simulator closeness in manual mode. I think it's close, but I also think for whatever reason I tend to suck at flying in simulators more than real life. I can see how version II if this would have a basic front facing camera, and then a 360 main camera. Basically pilot the drone without worrying too much about framing the shot, then go back and set the focus points in post. Then you could essentially solve all the smart shot issues without having to put all sorts of avoidance sensors that quite frankly ruin the whole experience of squeezing through tight spots.
@Dcrainmaker
@Dcrainmaker 3 жыл бұрын
Indeed. Semi similar to what Insta360 was proposing with their DJI Mavic mod system. I’m not sure if they ever ended up shipping that, but cool concept in theory. I think execution really needed to be internal like you said though.

They've actually gotten better in the last year or two with drones getting modest firmware updates, but nothing major. However, on the FPV goggle side they do oddly have a slightly bigger history of sending updates (like the 50Mbps update) than they do on the consumer devices.

I think so. If you practiced fully in there (with a real control), to the point of using manual mode for probably 15-20 hours or so and got comfortable with controlled manual flight, then I think you could make the switch. Otherwise, I'd start off with things like pre-built Whoop drones (such as the toy racer one), and then build up from there.

@Dcrainmaker

Hmm, that's actually an interesting question. There's lots of quirks right now in compatibility. For example, in audience mode the DJI FPV v1 goggles won't connect yet to it. And other things like the Smart Controller don't use OccuSync 3.0. For the Air Units, I didn't see explicit mention of those one way or the other. They obviously connect with the FPV v2 goggles, which are clearly O3, so I'd presume there's some backwards compatibility in the controller too. Anyway, all ask...

my question is....i do a lot of flying for crop farmers... most of my drones are too slow to get decent range and get a decent view of the back ends of farms... would this be a decent drone to get video long range and at a decent speed?

Fantastic review Ray. I really really want one, but hardly use my Spark these days - and with the 2yr care and spare batteries it’s just short of €2k. I think I’ll have to be sensible this time round and walk away and get rid of this FOMO.

Yup! It's a bit hard to film, because I have to try and stick the camera inside the goggles, but you can see it in a few shots here and there.

Thank you for another great review. Agree on price and FPV standpoint- dam and dam! Think I'll wait it out for next iteration and price. From an outdoor adventurer perspective, would need it to be more portable/compact and truly a lower cost.
@Dcrainmaker
@Dcrainmaker 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Robert! Indeed, the portability isn't super ideal. Somewhat funny story: Typically I never use the DJI bags/cases that come in the Fly More kits. Yet this time was literally the first time ever I was like "Huh, a case would actually be useful", due to the awkward nature of it. But no case came with it. Thus, I literally carried the thing around in an open-top Rubbermaid container everywhere. My spotter friends were like: Ummm...dude, you need to game up! 😂

Nope, not even a prop mark. Astounding. I’m still not 100% sure what I hit, I suspect it was the props, but might have been the top shell. I’d say 90/10 it was the rear props.

Great review. I really think they've missed the mark with this one as it fills a gap that nobody wants to be in. It's not a good cinematic drone, not a racing drone, not as versatile as a cinematic gopro setup on a fpv drone, and MOST importantly it's not durable enough. Almost every review seen so far the reviewers (who are seasoned pilots) have snapped the arms off, and expensive arms they are. Fortunately DJI are kings of evolutionary design, and without a doubt their next FPV offering will be gold.
@Dcrainmaker
@Dcrainmaker 3 жыл бұрын
I agree they may have landed sorta in the middle, but I don't think it's too bad. I think this does appeal to people who were considering a higher end Cinewhoop, but didn't really want to deal with all the 'baggage' of FPV (batteries namely, but also some DIY aspects)...and of course, have more money. Whereas, I think the gap is mostly around lack of features people expect from a DJI drone in 2020/2021 around intelligent flight modes - especially kinda silly stuff like the common orbit or dronie style shots that people part b-roll from.

nice video, mixing between N and S I am getting about 8 minutes of flight time.

I think the most important point you make is how vastly different it will be in 6 months to a year. All the first adopters are sort of guinea pigs. Because I don’t have the skill level or the time to fully invest into fpv I would like more automated features that can replicate fpv cinematic shots. I know DJI is probably intently taking in all comments at this point. I would like them to integrate something similar to their waypoint points feature. I think flying to a spot then saving the waypoint and action( dive to the next waypoint?) or something like you can press record fly the drone in N or S mode then stop. Then replay the whole flight while it stylize the path with fpv motion at a higher rate of speed(around fixed objects of course). I dunno I feel they might not add any of these things because it may open them up to liability. Oh well 🤷🏻‍♂️

Indeed, I think we're gonna see a dramatic change on not just this drone, but the next. Like perhaps using Active Track to track a subject camera-wise, but then you get to move around that subject in all the craziness that FPV allows.

@12:15 you talk about plugging in to a phone. I'm new to DJI and may not even have all the needed software downloaded-audience mode to another set of goggles is working fine--but, how do you get audience mode to a phone? Neiither DJI Fly nor DJI virtual flight seem to provide this. And, I don't see another app on the appstore.
@Dcrainmaker
@Dcrainmaker 3 жыл бұрын
With the DJI Fly app, plug them into the goggles while everything else is powered on. Once that happens, it’ll both offer to update ant software, but also show an option to see the sceeen.

@Dcrainmaker
@Dcrainmaker 3 жыл бұрын
Yes and no. Today it requires the goggles, even if you use the phone tethered to the goggles. But unfortunately there isn’t a way to see the flight metrics on the phone. In the goggles section above I show an example of it.
