DJI Mavic Air 2 MALFUNCTION, Crash's into Water, LOST, & What DJI said...

IMPORTANT INFO: The drone was NOT returning to home nor was I flying the drone (note no controller in hand) at the time of the incident. The MA2 was in active track trace mode during accident. Despite the thumbnail this is actually a positive review of my experience with DJI.
I wasn't sure which way this video was going to go a few weeks ago. It was a a stressful few days while the fate of my drone flying future was in limbo. I may have been extremely lucky due to having multiple angles of the incident but rest assured DJI doesn't say all cases of "flyway's" (lost drones). I'm proof.
Ultimately I am not really sure why the drone was acting the way it was, as you watch the video you can see it acting erratic behind me. I've head speculation that flying over water disrupts the censors but nothing I can confirm to be true.
There are some what sound like extremely windy parts in the video and I can assure you that the wind was lass than 10 mph all day (just sounds loud/bad on a video mic) - I wouldn't be on the kayak during heavy winds as that makes for a crappy day most of the time.
I guess DJI will be using my flight records to improve the DJI fly app in future updates. I was in Active Track Trace mode at the time of the malfunction it should have stayed the same distance away from me as to where I had originally set it.

I crashed and lost my 2 week old mavic mini 2 in the river it was my fault as u was flying under a bridge when i clipped it and down it went in the river never to be seen again....i emailed DJI asking if i could just purchase a new drone without the RC...they asked me to send them the flight data which i did then a few days later got back to me asking for my postal address as they were going to cover the crash under the warranty...as you can imagine i was over the moon and i cant thank DJI enough for there wonderful service

As u cn see at the slow motion scene, the drone prevented the rod perfectly, but it failed to detect the tiny fishing line in which the front left propeller got caught up with, hence the falling incident.

Did you notice that he was not holding the remote when it hit the fishing rod? Did you hear him mention he was having the drone follow him using active track?

@William Warner Yes, he did indeed say that, but did / could you see him set Active Tracking? In other words, did he indeed set it in Active Tracking ON HIMSELF (or, his boat, as an object), as he stated, or was the drone "anchored" to a POI? Why would he do that, if he wasn't moving? As he said, he was floating, anchored in a mud-bottomed lake, so it might well have been that he didn't notice that the wind caused him drifting into the direction of the drone... That (as in, the aledged drone-setting), in combination with the strong wind created a situation, with a lot of unanswered eventualities, where my guess is DJI couldn't (and might have not wanted to spend time to) proove, it wasn't a malfunction in the MA2 (= DJI's responsibility). I guess DJI took the easy road by avoiding a long finger-pointing discussion, including the "free" negative publicity from a disappointed KZbinr, (who knows, perhaps he hinted to his "YT-channel with thousands of subscribers and even more viewers", as a gentle motivation / threat?) and accepted the claim as an exceptional case, with expectation of promotional benefits about DJI's excellent Customer Service. I work at a QC & Service departement as well and sometimes make the same decision, just for the sake of Customer Satisfaction. It's a game well played by both parties, but I do not simply believe that our fisherman was right. In fact I doubt if he honestly told the whole story. And before people think that I'm one of the DJI-haters: I am infact a MA2-owner, myself and very happy with both my drone, as well as DJI, as brand.

@@oscar8695 I did watch the video. The drone pitches down before recognizing the pole and trying to stop (it does appear that it actually recognized the pole a little too late). If the wind was blowing the initial pitch of the drone indicates that it was blowing in the face of the drone and it still shot forward in reaction to it. With the pilot's hands off the controller the drone should not shoot forward like it did in the video. It's good to be skeptical but in this case it sure looks like the drone had a problem. Further, the pilot indicated that DJI requested all of the flight data which would have informed him if he was pushing up and then down on the right stick (assuming he uses standard control setting) which would have easily done away with his claim. You mention you fly drones yourself. I'm sure you're then familiar with the flight records kept in your fly app.

I just updated the replacement drones firmware the day it arrived, not sure off hand what the # is (at work). I use the DJI Fly app, I try to stay within the care fresh guidelines especially after this happened. I will try turning off obstacle avoidance, maybe that was what it was trying to do and being over water may have confused it a bit. Love the MA2, will be sticking with DJI for the foreseeable future.

you are very lucky indeed to have a replacement, there are too many factors here , wind, your fishing pole and the water, all these combination is enough to confuse the drone no matter how many calculations its doing to avoid it. perhaps next time you'll not attempt to do this whlist in the water as I very much doubt second time they do a replacement.

Good thing that you have secondary camera recording what happened at that moment. I’m sure there are plenty folks out there lost their drone in front of their eyes due to malfunction, but didn’t have a backup record of happened so they gotta take it as a lost.

Your absolutely right. I am curious to know if the flight records were even scrutinized that hard due to having 2 live shots. Luckily most of the time I fly I also have my GoPro going, but it’s not like a go pro would help if the drone malfunctioned further away.

I heard they actually changed the policy to where you can get 1 drone replaced even if it’s totally lost- as long as you have DJI Care I think you should have no problem. When mine crashed they hadn’t implemented that yet. Hope for the best for ya, these drones ain’t cheap!

The drone was in active track at the moment it hit my rod, why it was so close to me remains a mystery. I sent DJI both versions of the collision as well as a full length 10 min unedited version from launch to crash. I know I am very lucky to have gotten a replacement from this- mostly why I made the video as I had my doubts given what I heard on the forums

You are lucky my friend. I bought the mavic 2 pro the day it was released. Flew it for 4months and then on a post wedding shoot on a hotel balcony at night, everything went nuts. The drone had satellite lock and everything, I was slowly moving towards the balcony in tripod mode. Suddenly without any notification the drone went into atti mode on its own and right then and there I pulled back on the stick being an experienced flyer(it was my third drone, before I owned the mavic pro and phantom 4 pro). To my astonishment the drone didn’t take the command. It flew right into the glass wall over the balcony, crashed and fell right infront of me. I gave dji all the data I had. At first they said it looked like the drone malfunctioned but later they blamed it on my phone. As I was using an unlisted Huawei phone, they said it caused the malfunction and I wouldn’t get any replacement or repairs. As far as I know, the phone only works as a display but they didn’t reply to any further queries. I got the maivc air 2 a few weeks back and this time I didn’t even bother getting dji care.

Just lost my DJI mini 2 a week ago. Was flying without issues and then went to fly back to me, snagged a fishing line that was flapping in the wind off a tree, sucked my frone into the tree and poof right in 10-25ft black gatot filled water. Immediately dove in to look for it but no way to see without gear. Packed up and left. I went and go my scuba gear and searched to no prevail unfortunately. I miss lil Gordy. I hope I can find the drone. I have the insurance I bought from DJI when I bought my drone new from DJI. Fingers crossed I recovery Gordy and can get back to flying.

Propeller guards might or might have not helped, but imho if your flying over water a lot they have many light weight(foam) attachments that will make it float.

crashed my mini 3 pro into the water yesterday and it was only 4 foot deep, very little grass and was a nightmare trying to find it with 70% clarity in the water, i wouldn't have even tried to find yours in the situation you were in. Lost cause. I actually wasn't able to locate it the first day after it went into the water and had to go back today with my paddleboard and a grabber to reach for it. Got it out of the salt water and the thing has already corroded everywhere, there's what appears to be lithium grease from the battery squirted all over the internal compartment but one thing i will say is that all the cameras are bone dry, not any moisture behind the lens at all. Impressive. But the drone is toast and so is the battery unfortunately. Ill be sending it off to dji in the next couple days for ANOTHER replacement. The weird part was how it happened to begin with. The drone was about 200 feet in the air. i got a notification that i should lower the drone and return to home manually due to wind speed. So i looked up spotted the drone, everything seemed fine. looked back at the controller, put it in sport mode and full throttle down, a moment or two passed and then the screen froze, i look into the air trying to spot the drone and then i head "weeeeeeeeeeeeeee slap!" look over and there's the drone slapping the waters surface about 30 feet off the shoreline. I did almost what you did. Just sat there for a second. smiled and then was like "well there goes that" lol.

It flies altitude on its barometer. Not laser or radio sensing for altitude. Barometric pressure changes in wind and at sea level. Its infrared down sensors are near useless looking down into water. And when it gets downwind of your slipstream it reads a slight vacuum behind you. You are at seal level and it is windy. You have obstructions between you and the drone, being multiple fishing poles obstructing its target. The drone is looking up sun to see you multiple times. You are between it and the sun so it is very difficult even for us to see anything looking into the sun. It faulted to motors shutdown (and fallout) when it hit the obstruction fishing poles between the target you gave it for active track (you). It was looking for you and the collision sensors do have mass limits probably at their minimums being thin fishing poles. There is a big list of contributive failures for it.

I experienced this exact same issue with my MA2 minus the fact that I was able to switch to manual control really quickly and while that did not completely rectify the drone from making weird movements I was able to put it in S Mode and was lucky enough to catch it. Either way, super stressed about ever flying it over water again.

The drone seems struggling through the wind. Was the wind even stronger that time? Even so, the drone shoud've kept its distance coz that's what active tracking does. Luckily you had 2 video angles of the drone drowning. the 1st angle made me think that you had control over the drone.

So the downward sensors are funky over water. I’ve flown over fast flowing water in a river and the drone would want to drift with the water. Even just hovering. So I had to place in sport mode to override those sensors basically.

I think the purpose of the requirement of the drone is to reduce the threat of fraud and someone claiming it crashed or flew but instead sold it or gave it away. Your video evidence pretty much proved to them that you in fact lost it and broke it and not sold it so they didn't have a problem giving you a replacement.

Glad you got a replacement. DJI customer support generally sucks. I was disappointed that DJI crippled the waypoints in the MA2 software/firmware. It has "Waypoints for hyperlapse mode" in the features. I didn't figure out that was some kind of bologna waypoints system and really you cant fly missions at all. Really deceptive DJI! Probably will never support Litchi because it is crippled in the SDK too. They are trying to push you up to the pro version. Mine is wonky too. Gonna eat the restocking fee and send it back. Probably the most craptacular drone DJI has made

Has anybody heard of a problem with mavic 2 . After switching to 4:3 picture mode the transmission feed gets weak the screen on my phone becomes laggy,pixelated,video tearing then glitching making the image on screen unreadable this effect carries over to video mode and also causes dissconnects . This seemed to happen after a firmware upgrade. Upon switching photoes to 16:9 there is no lagg or nothing. Its almost like 4:3 picture mode really taxes the drones processing power . I find this really bizzare and shouldnt be happening.

I haven't experimented in that mode but it sounds like something DJI should be made aware of. The firmware update after I released this video pretty much fixed the active track issue I had. I believe as long as they know about it theyll attempt to correct it.

So sorry dude my mavic mini controller got hit by a wave on a speed boat and it took 4 months to replace and now just recently my mavic mini fell out the sky and i am awaiting the crash analysis

Best of luck to ya, hopefully they replace it for you. I’m not sure if it was the analysis or the multiple camera views or both that helped my case but if you were using any type of active tracking you should be alright. Fingers crossed for ya

Glad you got it replaced; my Mini just went down all of a sudden when I was flying it back. Had about 48% battery and just started to descend and I’m pushing the stick up no no but nothing was gonna stop it. Oh well 😃 Keep up the great videos 👍 #Getoutthehousegofish

Ohh no!! We’re you able to recover it? If not do exactly what I did and you prob will get a replacement especially when they review the flight data and see that it descended for no reason. Best of luck to ya!

It’s kind of funny I ran across this video because I just recently lost my Mavic air 2 in the ICW but it was completely my fault. Now I made a Mavic air 2 floats and recovery systems video that’s going to air in about two weeks.

I'll be looking forward to that video, I bought some floats and prop guards but admittingly I haven't used them like I should. Recent firmware updates or maybe the replacement drone they sent me I'm not having the erratic issues I had with the old one. Wonder how many drone the ICW has eaten over the years haha, its cursed!

@@CatchMeInTheCreek ... I got the pontoon floats and the round ones, I’m doing flight test, water land and take offs, go over the Getterback and inflating WaterBouy key chain devices. Hopefully it will help someone avoid the same tragedy. It will air in two weeks.

What is the point of active track modes? Controller was set to the side while I was making a video. Plus, I'm in the middle of the ocean, not one else around for miles... If companies are going to advertise / make available these modes of flight then they need to work correctly and be useful to consumers. Everything worked out - DJI's following firmware update targeted exactly the cause of this accident.

I lost my drone in a lake today. I was flying and turned around in the air and then it just started going down into the water and it crashed and sunk. The battery was not low. I'm bummed.

I ended up getting the pontoon style floats for my replacement. At least if it goes down it will float, does effect performance in flight though. Fair trade off

They replaced mine after I crashed my drone It was totally my fault, flying In the dark. Did have to pay the deductible. Thanks to DJI for doin what they said they would do.

It was your fault! The Drone did everything to stop its speed in order to avoid crashing into that Stick, one of the propellers hit it, and it lost Momentum! It’s not like the drone suddenly stopped working, always make sure to cover your margin of error, even for the smallest things!
