As with your original Mavic Pro videos, your coverage is just an order of magnitude better than anything else I see on drone footage. The information on noise and shooting in high contrast scenes is essential and just an indication of the work and thought you put into your own footage. So the Mavic Air does indeed look superb, but more than anything shows that DJI are really pushing the camera/sensor/image processing technology to the point where I expect the Mavic Pro 2 to have a significant upgrade in IQ, and it's probably worth waiting on that before decided whether to sell my original Mavic Pro and upgrade. Once again, fantastic video and keep up the good work.

Hi there. Once again..blown away by the effort and in depth nature of your drone videos. I just have a few questions about neat video and final cut pro when I edit my mavic pro videos. I have been loading the noise profile onto my created video not on the individual clips. I make my cuts, color grade and add all music then export. Re-open exported video with fcpx again to add the denoise profile. Should I be denoising each individual clip separately or the created clip once at the end like I am doing? I use the same iso, and color profile on the mavic...but the lighting conditions and my nd filter selected can differ between the clips. Thank you for your expertise!
@thefilmpoets6 жыл бұрын
You''ve got the right idea. If it's all the same iso or close to it then you can do a global Denoise no problem.
@mikaelvellmun72286 жыл бұрын
The Film Poets thank you for the confirmation! I have also not tried your 100iso d-cinelike neat video profiles. I normally create my own using each video with as high of a quality rating and in an area with as high of a percent noise as possible. Would you still recommend just using your pre-made mavic pro noise profiles for every video over creating a new one for each?
@thefilmpoets6 жыл бұрын
Yes I do recommend using an actual noise profile from a chart vs using a random clip. It's more accurate and gives neat video more information to work with.

Manual exposure with the lowest ISO possible. I use the shutter to expose.

@@thefilmpoets Thanks for the fast response, on the new DJI app would that setting be ISO 100 and SHUTTER set to ?? if it makes a difference, I will be filming mostly on sunny islands.

@@ldesp3430 You move the shutter up until the exposure is correct. It depends on the light. You can look at the EV meter to get an idea, which should be 0EV if you have the sky and ground in the shot at the same time. Great video Matt! quick question. I recently got the air and have been using the setting you suggested and I've noticed when shooting in flat light, a lot of shots are unusable with detail being thrown out in the shadows creating a watercolor type effect. Is this something you've noticed as well? Any tips?
@thefilmpoets6 жыл бұрын
I've noticed that the Air does not like to be underexposed. So if you're in flat light, with no highlights, raise the exposure up a a bit to keep the majority of the image out of the shadows. Using the histogram as you shoot may help, you'll learn where it likes to be to stay clean. Hope that helps a bit. -Matt P.S. As always, I take a bow. Your analysis is the most valuable on the internet for professional shooters. Thank you for the invested time. I had exactly the same issues on the pictures in the icelandic lavafield with the same overcast weather. When I was changing my shutter speed to 30, the whole picture (or should I say codec) broke down due to the noise patterns. What do you think of the acustic noise level of the Air? Does it sound like a wasp attack or is it useable for your wedding shoots?
@thefilmpoets6 жыл бұрын
Yea the Mavic codec could use a lot of improvement, have to hear that it burned you! The Air sounds pretty loud. To me it's more of a high pitch noise like wasps. I've only flown once or twice during a wedding precessional and in those cases the bride requested it and the music covered the sound. Once that ceremony starts it'll be a huge distraction! -Matt

One more question: What is your impression with 400 ISO and above? I have the impression that we get the mushy watercolor look again once we get to 400.
@thefilmpoets6 жыл бұрын
I didn't do a lot of tests, but the noise ramps up for sure and starts to overtake the detail. It needs de-noising still, but it still seems to out-perform the mavic pro .
@-SkyHawk-6 жыл бұрын
The Film Poets Oh yes, the video quality is due to the 100Mbit definately better than what the Codec does with the output of the Mavic Pro even even though stated otherwise by some. By the end of the week I will have put the footage under stress in CC.

Yes thats the Mavic Air for sure. They were both matched at kelvin temp (6000k) & resolution. It feels like the air is a bit warmer overall but has more cyan in the sky. If you compare just the grass you'll notice that the mavic pro has more green, and a more natural blue sky.

I am having issues understanding what to do with ISO and and shutter speed auto and manual settings for video. If I use manual settings when facing the lightsource(sun) once I turn around things are too dark. Are these manual settings only good for one direction of flight then they must be adjusted during the flight if your direction changes?
@thefilmpoets5 жыл бұрын
Anytime you have the actual light source in the shot it's going to clip if you're exposed for the scene that the light is falling on. So you're right, both shots have their own exposure and you need to change exposure when going between, or find a happy medium. Then you just edit out those exposure changed in your film.

Great video! One question to the pros: I have the impression, that 1080 material is not that sharp as 4k which is downconverted to 1080. Is this true and what is the reason (maybe 1080 usues only a part of the sensor and that makes the difference). I´d prefer to shoot higher framerates as 4k allows, thats why I don´t want to shoot in 4k.
@thefilmpoets6 жыл бұрын
Thomas Kretschmer rondo 1080p mode has to bin the image from the sensor. So it takes an average of three pixels and blends them to equal 1 pixel of the 1080p image. This is vastly different than recording true 4k and then downscaling it to 1080p, which can look really good. It works differently for every camera. Hope that helps. -Matt

OK so we know that the we should set our shutter speed double to that of our frame rate to get the most natural motion blur. My question is what is the best course of action if you have your drone away in the distance and the sunlight changes. Would you adjust your EV and sacrifice the motion blur, or would you stick to the 180 degree rule at the expense of over/under exposing the video?
@thefilmpoets6 жыл бұрын
Me personally, I don't follow a 180 shutter. It isn't a rule, although its sometimes confused with the 180 degree rule for keeping proper eyeline. The only people I know who get stuck on the 180 degree shutter are newbies who read that they should do it and commercial filmmakers and cinematographers who can practically do it. Most everyone else including, live event filmmakers raise the shutter speed to expose. Drone footage especially becuase nothing is moving that quickly across the frame.
@skumavideo6 жыл бұрын
Wow that is the first time i'm seen someone come out with that opinion. Interesting when I did some research on the 180 degree rule, I only found articles regarding camera position. So are you saying you don't use ND filters on your drone? I did a little test here, the left video shows no blur (shot without a filter) and the middle video shows blur because of the fitted nd filter kzbin.info/www/bejne/q33PdmmrrpWrnqs
@thefilmpoets6 жыл бұрын
Yea your test shows it perfectly. Thats how shutter speed works. Do the same test with your drone on a normal scene and you want see much difference. Unless people are jumping or clapping their hands its not that big of a deal. Plus you can't maintain a 180 shutter on a mavic without flying it up, checking exposure for the ND, bringing it down, setting the ND, flying back up, hoping the clouds don't change etc... Feel free to do it of course but it will slow you down. At least do a test on some normal footage first. Almost no wedding filmmaker uses ND filters unless they are shooting with a c100. Just don't get too stuck on it at first.

Thanks for the video lad What tweak do you do to reduce noise on the lut?
@thefilmpoets6 жыл бұрын
Thanks. So the LUT corrects for the -3 contrast setting and gives you more dynamic range than you would have if you shot with 0 contrast. The noise reduction is separate, and is done using a program called Neat Video, which take note profiles of camera sensors and removes the noise. It's a paid program and isn't cheap, but extremely useful for high ISO stuff

HI! Great video. Thanks for sharing. I have to decide if buying the Air or the Pro. Can´t decide. I am worried about the wifi issue instead of the Occusync, however, I don´t fly long range ever, not even when I had the 4 Pro. What would you choose? Is the wifi in the city is it ok?
@thefilmpoets6 жыл бұрын
I haven't flown in the city so I'm not sure. But I can imagine wifi dropping in different situations. Even in my area there is a slight lag which I don't like at all. I think that cancels out the image quality gains, especially since you can clean the mavic pro image if you have to. I'd choose based on size. For me it will either go over my shoulder in a bag or it won't, and both of these drones will do that, so the smaller size doesn't really add much.

Thanks for the fast response. Let me ask you something else. The APAS and the back sensor doesn´t add up to chose the Air? And the signal drop is it that often, so much to make it a decisive element?
@thefilmpoets6 жыл бұрын
It's not really a signal drop so much as a lag. So push the stick forward, you don't see it move forward instantly, there's a delay. That won't bother everyone. Also I don't do automated flying and I always know whats around the drone before flying, so sensors really don't help. But I can see them being a huge help to others. I think as far as design and functionality goes, this is a wonderful upgrade to the Spark, and as far as camera goes, it's a modest upgrade to the Mavic Pro. For some people it will be the perfect drone.

I´ve been flying drones for a while now. And never had such a difficult time to decide. It will be at least for some time, my only drone. I like to travel and being portable. And battery I think could end up being a little issue but not sure if enough to pass. Damn! Hard decition.

if there's one thing I've learned from buying gear it's that you'll make whatever you have with you work. So it might be best to just pick one, start learning the strengths and weaknesses, and go from there.

Hey Matt, any plans on releasing a best setting and LUT for phantom 4 pro by any chance?
@thefilmpoets6 жыл бұрын
DJI sent me a P4 Pro + last month. I've been working on a detailed review that should be read in about a week. That thing is amazing!
@Lvl9chao6 жыл бұрын
That's awesome. Will be waiting for your video!

Hi Matt, just wondering if you still have plans on releasing a best setting and LUT for the phantom 4 pro. Thanks!
@thefilmpoets6 жыл бұрын
Hey, that tutorial is almost finished. The p4 pro is really interesting, I show some comparisons between the dynamic range vs the mavic pro when both are in d-log. Will post next week!

Hello and greetings from the Netherlands. Question: Can these LUTS also be used with Adobe Premiere Pro?
@thefilmpoets6 жыл бұрын
Yes. Just load the in Lumetri Color panel under the creative section.

hey Matt if only DJI put brighter lens on Mavic Air.. it could compete with Mavic Pro. but it's light capturing capabilities are worse than Mavic Pro., I like very detailed and very usefull settings and conclusions on ur videos. I really like that vid about best settings for Mavic Pro .. - great work! and great explanation :) thanks for sharing!

Thanks! I love the value of the Air, but the Mavic 2 zoom and Pro are much better if you have the budget.

As a Mavic Pro owner was keen to see what you thought of the Air, I've been looking at Neat Video to help Denoise, would you recommend the After Effects or Premiere plugin? any experience using Davinci Resolve instead of Neat Video?
@thefilmpoets6 жыл бұрын
I love Neat Video and use it for almost every film. It can save high iso footage from any camera. I own Resolve Studio, and the noise reduction is nice, but nothing compares to Neat Video. If you aren't feeding the noise reduction software a profile of the noise, it can only guess at what the noise is and usually ends up removing detail as well. Side note, Neat Video is also my favorite sharpening tool because it doesn't sharpen the noise. If you get it, I'd get the version that you plan to use for the final export of your films. So most likely Premiere. Also it helps support more films if you buy from this link : geni.us/NeatVideo

Do you personally recommend the air or the phantom 4 pro? Your opinion would mean a lot.
@chosenideahandle6 жыл бұрын
Those are two completely different tools, for different jobs. Do you travel and need compactness at the cost of slightly lower image quality (Mavic Air), or are you looking for more professional results, but don't mind lugging a gigantic piece of gear around (phantom series of drones)?

You are the best. Really good knowledge

Does the "Mavic Air LowLight Pack" work in FCPX ? just want to know before buying 😄
@thefilmpoets6 жыл бұрын
yes BUT you need to own Neat Video for fcpx too. The pack is a noise profile the you feed into neat video so that it knows how to remove the noise.

What is Neat exactly ? cause i really don't know sorry. And how i use it with your pack in fcpx, it's a plugin like colore final ?
@chosenideahandle6 жыл бұрын
Neat is a $75 noise reduction plug-in available for most editing programs (like FCP).
