'Return to home failure', no, 100% pilot error! Complete lack of any risk assessment, no flight plan and complete disregard for the safety of people or property. 1. Flight plan, you should have considered the wind direction and strength, if you must do long distance tests with your drone, and there is any wind, fly into it going out and fly back with the wind direction behind you, better still choose a calm day! Consider take off and landing areas are suitable? You had lots of trees, houses, property, power lines and busy roads to negotiate in the last section which you must have known would be a risk if your drone ran out of juice! 2. Risk assess. Every flight, check your drone, battery levels etc consider the weather, check your flight path is safe to fly over? I lost count of the dangers I spotted in your flight video! 3. Safety. Above all consider the dangers of your flight, what if things go wrong? respect other peoples property and the safety of others. How would you like a heavy drone falling out of the sky and landing on your car or house? What if it had hit and injured someone? You probably would have made it if you weren't in sport mode, flying faster uses up your remaining juice a lot quicker! Your flight path in both directions was a wide arc, caused by the wind but you could have compensated much better and flown a straighter much shorter path. I only fly a so called 'toy grade' very light quadcopter but I still fly responsibly, and safely! I only hope you have learned from your own mistakes? Fly safe and enjoy.

@snort01usafret516 жыл бұрын
Excellent point Anthony. Wind velocity decreases the lower you go. Also, RTH mode on the Mavic Pro will "Home" to your destination. Proceeding direct and crabbing into the wind will minimize the distance you need to go. By observing wind direction on the ground will give you a good idea of how much crab angle you will need to be able to "proceed direct".

You say the wind took you to the left, but that's not true! On the trees we can see that there is hardly any wind and in the direction of smoke it can be seen that there was a weak flow to the right! The gimbal shaking error could indicate a propeller error and should have returned immediately! The camera was so shaky that he couldn't stand sharply almost all the time. This is a 100% pilot error!

I doubt this was a wind issue. There was no evidence of it being blown by the wind. I’ve seen a mavic being blown by very strong winds and it only moved an inch. Also there should’ve been High Velocity Winds warning. I think this was most likely an compass error. Maybe didn’t calibrate it before flight.

You reinforced one thing I’ve learned after many years of flying RC, if something seems unusual or the craft isn’t functioning normally, don’t keep flying and certainly don’t push yourself and the craft to perform an unfamiliar task. Lastly, for all those out there just getting into drones, don’t fly out of visual line of site. I dont know why you keep going on about the wind. It looked fairly calm to me and the chimney smoke confirmed it. Furthermore, the drone was drifting left according to you. Yet the smoke was being blown to the right telling a different story to the one you're presenting. I've had my Mavic pro out to 2.752 miles over the sea and still had 30% on the battery once it returned.
@brucelinton30715 жыл бұрын
Wind direction and velocity can change between the surface and varying altitudes. Also keep groundspeed in mind. Flying in one direction, the wind at your back can work for you untill you have to return or vice versa. As someone mentioned earlier, planning is critical so if you don't understand the effects of wind on your flight path and ground speed, you should keep the drone within line-of-sight and not push the limits BVLOS.

I can tell you that wind was not a factor at all, you got no wind warnings or advisories also judging fro. The smoke no way the wind was more then a gentle breeze at most. I think you need to calibrate your controls or use default gains and exp. also disable landing protection is a must when smoke/fog/rain or range testing.. trust me it can sometimes trigger false positives. When in auto landing mode you can tap and hold up on the stick and over ride it but expect a massive slow down in speeds and expect it to reset back to auto landing again after a few seconds just keep pulling it back up.. 12% is the auto landing point, remember that and pull up either earlier, and get max height you can or hold and prevent it. I done many extreme range runs myself.. 3.5 miles out is what I regularly achieve.
@LiquidLabStudio7 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the tips, I see some of the improvements in hindsight of course. I had serious Yaw on it in the beginning half I think it could have been a powerful cold front... Liquid Lab Studio maybe you have or had a defective mavic pro? Mine doesn't act that way unless really strong winds of 25MPH+ and I get a red wind advisory that won't go away. Once wind is strong enough to dictation direction of your mavic your mavic will refuse to go top speed unless you are pointing it to fly directly with the wind, if you trying to crab across it or fly against it it will go really slow because it is trying fight it..or zero itself out. In the last half of your video with it crabbing slightly and going 40mph leads me to think that it's either pilot error (not calibrated controls or poorly calibrated settings) or defective mavic pro, which usually would post an IMU exception error if it can't detect wind speeds correctly or losses zero I didn't see that error either or IMU redudancy switch show up. I don't think you flew in too strong of winds by any means, I flown in 30mph winds where the mavic was barely able to fly in sport mode this isn't showing any of these signs. but rather you flew with wrong settings I'm thinking. probably setup the various speeds and gains for more smooth cinematic motion and thus your mavic was unable and unwilling to properly fly straight in a gentle breeze.. or your sticks fell out of zeroing and you need to calibrate them
@LiquidLabStudio7 жыл бұрын
I am not entirely sure what type of temperature or cold front could have pushed it It started after I entered the flooded wet land area. The drone flew slightly angled I had to constantly add a little Yaw to keep it going generally straight. Please like and Subscribe, LLabS
@Honeypot-x9s7 жыл бұрын
the only problem i have is the screen recording you posted: if wind is dictating the direction of your aircraft you would have had a red wind warning popup on the left side telling you to keep it in line of sight, etc etc.. if the wind was consistently strong enough that it was failing to correct itself or on the edge of failing to, it would put up an error on the top bar next to the DJI logo, in yellow it if could fight or red if it cant and would have overwritten the gimbal vibration error. since wind is a higher priority alert. im not doubting that there was a struggle, maybe was just enough wind to give you issues if you relaxed the aggressiveness of your mavic for that cinematic flow.. the smoke was rising and stagnant and both directions over the wetlands area and further up the smoke was rising and slowly drifting to the side, obviously was wind, just not enough wind if default settings are used that it couldn't fought off easily. that's why i suggest maybe you have adjusted your settings for cinematic movement or controller/mavic is defective or out calibration.. again i flown in 30MPH winds and at 30MPH your mavic is mostly out of control and it will walk to the side alot and swing hugely wide like yours did. 30MPH up 400 feet would still be very blowy down on ground level maybe 20MPH+ and you would know its a bit too blowy on the ground, the trees in the video were not swaying or blowing. and 20MPH winds itself the mavic crabs a bit if you leave it stationary out of range of VPS, however it would keep a mostly straight line coming back home and would be coming back much slower if it was a cross wind trying to push it to the side.. the mavic will try its hardest to fight it on its own.. as for a cold front/up/down drafts i dont know your area to well, but usually that occurs much higher up over ground level (unless at edge of a mountain) and/ or on the very edges of storms/weather systems. could it have been a up/down drafts from front changes? sure maybe... but only 400 feet AGL, that's a bit too low in my experience to hit those specially without in app wind errors., even in the winter when things settle much closer to ground level..
@LiquidLabStudio7 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching it was a very good analysis.I think it was a slow powerful cold front pushing it I had to apply lots of Yaw to keep it going straight. I really think the wind warnings are from wind gusts and the IMU, and maybe visual sensors, sonar, and compasses detect shaking. The conditions were it was a long distance for a small and light aircraft flying over wetlands, in the winter, as the sun was setting, and near mountains over a valley but at 400 feet it would have been subject to the environmental conditions above the hills and trees. It may have been a weird fluke... Please like and Subscribe, Cody LLabS

Well if you actually know what you are doing it isn't a problem. I live in the middle of the desert it used to be fun to see what my Phantom could do. Never lost one on close to a thousand miles of flight. You defeinately learn what to do and not to do. I can say there were several things here that were causes for concern. My biggest issue is where he flew and what he flew over. My flights are over the desert if when things go bad the worst thing that could happen is that I crush a mesquite bush. Not a fan of flying over property. I do think the risk is minimal but still why risk it. Distance flights can be done safely the end of the day the worst outcome should be you lose or destroy your bird.

Its important to make sure the Drone is up to date and properly calibrated before you fly. When the battery got low, I would have taken it out Sport mode to conserve battery power, and when the drone tried to ato land in the trees, I would have disable the auto land, and manually raised the altitude from near the trees, and to my location since it was that close, hopefully the battery would have lasted a few more minutes.

I agree that is what I would have done if I didn't do the stupid thing and hope it would just get a little closer. Sport mode killed me it dropped at 40 mph into auto landing in the trees. Watching the video you had to activate the button back home when the drone is used in sport mode the battery is discharged faster.When the return to the home is activated late,the percentage of the battery is not enough,that is why it collapsed. Thanks for the tip, that is a very smart practice to check the UAV forecast. That is one thing we would do for a passenger planes but forget on drones. I was thinking the same thing about the Sport Mode draining the battery too fast. I knew if I had to hover it or land it a mile out I would probably not be able to drive to it, when the RC signal cuts out it does less predictable things. I would never see it again (kids, private property, lack of roads, random crash, or bad location. That was my fault trying to push it all the way back. Still entertaining in hindsight. Appreciate you posting this, but I really don't understand why guys want to fly a $1000+ drone out of sight. I've lost a couple of Walkera Furious that cost $300 and that made me feel like a complete idiot. I noticed that you were at almost maximum height, it gets way to windy up there. I just had to use care refresh because I made a mistake indoors and that pissed me off enough. Like I said good of you to post this, but like the previous comment it is 100% pilot error.
@LiquidLabStudio7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. I usually fly conservatively, close by, and don't go below 40% on the battery. I was trying to see if the Mavic Pro could go as far as my Phantom 4 Pro. The biggest mistake was assuming it would have enough battery for the return flight home with the wind pushing it. You are right you take this kind of endeavor it could run into trouble. He was only at his set height limit he wasn't even at 400 ft I believe and this was not a wind issue wind does not cause the mavic to drift that badly and that consistently I think it was either imu or compass malfunction causing the drift.
@waynedevantier62477 жыл бұрын
Alex Rothbard, I have watched this vid several times and I totally agree with you. On the return to home the smoke direction is opposite of the drone drift. It really is not that windy - even at 400 ft. If it was a wind issue there would have been a warning on the controller as the drone has gps lock and it does sense the drift - no wind gust required. There is something wrong here - maybe send flight logs to dji ?
@LiquidLabStudio7 жыл бұрын
I can see if they analyze flight logs. I had to provide lots of Yaw on the way out and didn't do as much compensating on the way back. I wonder if it was a strong cold front coming in because the sun was dropping...
@coyhilton91377 жыл бұрын
Alan Carter I could tell he was going to fly it into the ground , not because of the title but because he didn't heed the warnings! I won't even take my 350 dollar racing drone out on a bad day, and I always have it near by, when the low battery is expected, and my racing drone will fly over 50 MPH.... I am so pissed that he shows no more respect than that!

100% Pilot error. So how many signs did you need that this was going to end horribly? Flying it out of visual sight, losing communication with controller, and GPS error. Yet you still think it’s a great idea to continue to proceed to push it. 🤦♂️ You had a compass and IMU issue, clearly needed calibration. Wind was not a factor and matter of fact there wasn’t any. Smoke was going straight up and hardly dissipated. Also the trees we not even moving. I’m glad you got her back, you really need to have a better flight plan next time and a bit of common sense. You should of just aborted the flight and returned back. Also on returning back you just should of landed in a safe area and gone to it with enough battery to locate it. You would of avoided the crash. On a second note you do know that you’re not allowed to fly over traffic which you clearly did. This is why the FAA gets so aggravating with drones.
@DroneUpp6 жыл бұрын
I have to somewhat disagree with you. I believe there was wind at the height and location of the drone. It could have been less wind in the area of the smoke. Even still, 100% pilot error and he gets an F for flying period. This is the poster boy video of what Not To Do! Great costly lessons learned!
@400AGLNET5 жыл бұрын
All of the pilot error comments are spot on, and the very first error was flying the Mavic way beyond LOS and Aircraft limits.
@alexrothbard43247 жыл бұрын
LOL yeah bro this has pilot error written literally all over it omg it was hard to watch. I mean just keeping the drone going that far with that gimble shake error on without bringing it back for inspection is dumb. The compass and IMU were probably not calibrated. You literally didn't focus the damn camera the entire time lol I just can't believe you would even try to blame it on the drone. Sorry for the rude comment but damn man read the manual plz.
@LiquidLabStudio7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. The IMU, gimbal, and compass were calibrated the day before. You can tell because it reset the video recording settings from 4k to 1080p 60fps. The gimbal shake error is a byproduct of the replaced flat ribbon cable. The gen 1 Mavic Pro focus requires constant tapping of the screen was applied constantly the camera didn't record well with the low light conditions. Thanks for watching enjoy your holidays.
@alexrothbard43247 жыл бұрын
the video should not reset to 1080 after doing imu and compass cal I duno man ur mavic is just fuked up I guess it seemed really sketchy probably a good thing it crashed get yourself a fresh one.
@LiquidLabStudio7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the video settings and gimball/reset calibration did it. I purchased the Gen 1 Mavic and it has been nothing but problems. Honesty, this is why I mostly fly the Phantom 4 Pro. It may sound like a bus but it is reliable.
@LiquidLabStudio7 жыл бұрын
Thank you for commenting. The gimbal, video settings, IMU, and compass were calibrated before the flight. I also used its required tap to focus function throughout the flight you can see in the small screen it would flash as I would apply it. The gimbal shake error was caused by a flat ribbon replacement it was never quite perfect after that. I hope this explains some of it for you, Please like and Subscribe, Cody LLabS

One thing I noticed was the smoke was blowing from left to right but when it got up a bit it didn't indicate much wind at all. I know wind speed at ground level can be quite different from wind aloft but as the smoke went aloft it did not blow flat it just dissipated. I don't think this was a wind issue. John

I find the loss of signal at under 3 miles curious, the factory claims it has a range of 4.7 miles, was the drone battery fully charged at the beginning of the flight? My Mavic tells me it is "out of range" at about 15 meters. The controls still work, the video feed to my tablet freezes, the drone continues to film, and will respond to a "home" command. A part of this appears to be DJI no longer supports the OS of my tablet. For the first year I had the drone, the tablet/ monitor worked fine but after one of their "firmware upgrades" this out of range frozen screen stuff started. It works normally with some other OS. Every problem I've experienced in 3 years of flying has been software or firmware related. (This is not only my opinion, there is a DJI shop near my house, it is also their opinion.)

might be completely wrong but, looking at the smoke I think the wind was blowing in the other direction, I've seen this before, could be a motor error or a damaged prop, wind is different at different altitudes though, glad you got your drone back
@ch5356 жыл бұрын
To be completely fair, yes this was your fault, but I'm glad you uploaded it. DJI's drone technology with their "Flies itself" approach and marketing gives a lot of newbie pilots, myself included, an overinflated sense of safety and control. Seeing these kinds of failures is humbling, and reminds us to be more aware of our environment, the conditions we fly in, and the flight plans we make. Thanks for sharing, sorry about your drone, but hopefully it was a learning experience. The best mistakes are the ones where nobody gets hurt. Fly safe!

Subscribed and look forward to the return of the mavic. Ignore the haters in here. Your flying in a remote location and we're 1,500 feet away with 12% battery. That's normally no issues and I been the same myself many times. People that ramble on about flight plans and "you're fault" probably don't own a drone. Thats a good video and has 200k views lol.
@skunkworx61907 жыл бұрын
I fly my mavic like I'm scuba diving. Divers go off the rule of 3rds. Use 1/3 of air to get where you're going, 1/3 for the RTH, and the remaining is for emergency. Same can be applied for battery consumption. I'm still learning the battery curve as well so not going to push it just yet.

Had a similar situation. Once it was obvious it couldn’t make it home I used the last bit of control to maneuver near a road and a clearing. Lost contact and drove around to the location and there it sat. Lesson learned....take a good emergency landing spot over a bad mandatory landing spot any day. As for the wind you absolutely have to crab into it far enough to get the desired ground track or you’ll just fly circles around your destination all day.

Pilot error 100%. Good that you make this video so others avoid to do the same! If you are at almost 400 feet of the ground with heavy gust winds. Lower your drone altitude in acordando to the height of the obstacles so it wont crash into them. Remember at lower altitude less wind force. While looking for your drone you should change the GPS mode to "Terrain" that way you will get a better look of your surroundings and faster to find. Remember the drone as nothing to do, they are make for the pilot to fly them with care. Thank you for taking the time on showing us the video and please fly safe! We don't want the FAA to hit hard on us because of this mistakes which it could turn into an injury to private property. This mistakes cost repair $$$. Keep it simple and safe! Take care.

I’ve had a broken leg just like that. Glued it. Then I had to mess with gimbal a Lille, get it positioned right with those bands. Mine came down thru the trees too. They really are pretty tuff. I can’t bring myself to take my eyes off the sky and trust the remote. My. Son has an Anahi and he makes pretty good flights. What city are u in? Yup, as a student pilot (circa 1995) I remember doing ground reference maneuvers (C-152) with my instructor, in strong winds aloft. BIG lesson in 'compensating' for wind there bro! Also I think I would have a 'radius of action' plan, whereby, based on battery life, you know how far you can go before you MUST turn around. Nice aerial views!
@LiquidLabStudio7 жыл бұрын

Glad to see you got it back...as people have said...when doing a distance test always fly into the wind...another important factor is..the further away you fly you need to climb higher to keep a good signal...you were too low for the distance away...thats why you had a weak signal...the onboard system can use the battery quicker trying to keep the signal! For long long distance try at least 150 ...200...250 meter altitude...that maybe illegal but flying out of sight is too so it don't make any difference..😁

Did you made the compass calibration before the flight ? Looking at the smoke and I think this is not problem of the wind. As Ruudy set if You had crash before it is mandatory to make IMU and compass calibration and verify sensors behavior. Remember that connetion of model and reciver on dji frequency is type of microwaves and model and reciver must see each other during the flight like CB radio. Read also about limitations in model behavior in sport mode (obstacles avoiding not working)

Having only tried Mavics a couple of times I'm no pro, but to me it seems they are almost foolproof as long as you follow the warnings and recommendations. The forced landing "feature" seems a bit irritating, at some points it may be better to push on and take a small crash than attempting to land in dense trees, a lake or other body of water or worst of all, someones house or into people/Animals. Oh, it seems they are extremely fragile - I fly freestyle FPV and I can drop my drone into concrete from 20 meters or fly straight into a wall at speed and only lose props, but I guess the can't make them pretty and foldable if built as strong: I would think at the price they should at least be carbon fibre though.
