I just tried what you did with your dynamic mic, but I used the Rode PodMic USB. I tried the connecting the Mogami XLR to 1/4 inch but didn't work as well as your SM7dB. The audio was super low and when boosted in Audition, the noise floor was horrendous!!! My voice was fine, but that noise floor is...yikes!!!

That's cuz he's not mentioning he's usimg a mic with a preamp...the "db" in sm7db means it has a built in preamp so of course it's gonna work

To be fair, every 32 bit floating point recorder should be able to do this, not only the DJI Mic 2. The audio signal should come in super quiet, but because of the 32 bit you can lift it to regular levels without (much/any?) distortion. However, this will NOT power mics that require phantom power, but any dynamic mic should work fine. That being said, it's crazy impressive that this is possible and I'm looking forward to trying it out myself.

The DJI Mic 2 in 32bit float with the gain cranked to the max and recording internal - is able to provide enough power to Shure SM7DB - no preamp switch enabled (didn’t try it with it on) I was able to get a clean usable sound as you see in the video with an off brand 3.5mm to XLR cable. Very impressive result.

So they might have patched this after a few software updates. It really depends what xlr to 3.5mm cable you're using and if you're recording it 32bit internally on the mic

How indeed! It’s a combination of the 32bit float and the little device having enough juice (maybe because better batteries and more efficient circuits) that makes this possible. But NOT only possible, it’s also a clean usable signal!

As a Osmo Pocket 3 owner, I feel a little screwed that DJI doesn't sell the Mic 2 a single mic kit with the charging case. If you buy the single mic bundle, they give you a stupid little pouch and charging cable. Also, I wonder how many of the Mic 2's can connect to the Osmo Pocket 3 internally via bluetooth. Great video and I'm definitely getting the 2 mic set and I guess I'll have 3 mics all together. Weird and unthoughtful by DJI, but it is what it its I guess... What does the battery life look like when powering the Shure mic?

Main question is this: can you monitor audio from your DAW if your dji mic 2 is recover is plugged into the iPad or iPhone as there is no audio out on them. Ie will the headphone jack and out jack monitor only from the mics, or will it monitor the usbc audio from the iPad? (Can it function as a sound card)

The RX does have a headphone jack for monitoring and just like a usb c hub it should provide monitoring. There might be a software limitations somewhere beside that id assume it will work.

I was about to pack up the SM7dB when I had the last attempt to plug directly into 3.5mm of the FX30 itself and to my surprise. It sounds perfectly fine.... I'm extremely confused because I am getting NOTHING when plugged into the 3.5mm jacks of both my DJI Mic 2, be it recorded locally or through the receiver, and by nothing I mean that I have to amplify disgustingly high to hear and for the noise floor to be louder than my own voice. I am now wondering if I have defective DJI Mic 2s, I bought literally on launch, are there manufacturing independencies? I doubt it... But basically, your DJI Mic 2 supplies phantom power to your Shure right? My camera does, but my Mic 2s do not seem to... Any suggestions or ideas? I retested this with a few other mics and now it doesn’t work for me either. Idk if they disabled something via a firmware update on the DJI Mic 2. Kinda driving me crazy cause it wasn’t the case before.

@@Fredo.heavyy Seems like they killed the feature then, I looked everywhere to try and find some documentation that confirmed the DJI Mic 2 had phantom power and nothing nowhere. Anyway, I realized I'm better off putting the DJI Mic 2 on a stand and use it as a mic, works well and using the magnet clip, it's super easy to set up. Now, I just need to make it look presentable. Make sure you’ve actually enabled 32bit float in the settings. Make sure the gain on transmitter & receiver is on 12+ Also not all XLR to 3.5mm cables are created equal

@@Fredo.heavyy I’ve confirmed it’s enabled & the internal WAVs show as 32-bit on the DAW, and the gain on the mic is maxed out at +12 I bought 2 cords on Amazon which claim to be balanced & have good reviews, but neither work on any of my 3 mics. Maybe it’s bad luck, but I think I’ll have to put a Zoom F3 in between and connect the DJI via the TRS 3.5mm line out. The state of the audio cable market is abysmal, this always happens when I try to get cables that switch between standards ;_;

Could be a couple factors. What camera are you using? Make sure the level are set correctly. Are you using internal DJI mic 2 recording or pumping it straight into camera? Make sure 32bit float is enabled via receiver.

It does power the SM7DB no preamp no phantom power, that what’s being tested and proved. I am syncing the 32bit float file in post after recording internally. I am not boosting the gain cause I set the levels correctly.

If your usage is limited to the Pocket Osmo 3 than you can get away with no receiver If you’re NOT on a budget I’d buy the full kit as having a spare mic won’t hurt and you have potential to use with a mirrorless camera (or other camera) in the future if you upgrade

I’m getting mixed results at the moment, they might have disabled the functionality with the latest firmware update. Sometimes it works for me and other times I get no audio at all, I’m ordering a different brand of XLR to 3.5mm to test further.

Yea the DJI MIC 2 will power SHURE SM7B no need for a preamp. from what ive heard so far on a few different videos, the dji mic 2 sounds a bit muffled in the field. maybe thats the noise cancelling. Also, there was a lot of popping and clipping but the mic may have just been too close to your mouth. When plugged into the shure SM7B, did you have to do anything to the audio in post? Or do you just bring in the audio file and sync it to your video clip?

I just put the DJI Mic 2 in 32bit mode, set the transmitter gain to max and record internally. In post I post the gain a little bit but that’s it. I wasn’t able to hear the clipping or popping on my end. Might be a result of my hand holding the mic. Sound is very subjective and I’ve got people saying DJI MIC 2 sounds better than DJI MIC 1 and vice versa

It’s possible, just buy a line level attenuator to not burn the dji mic since it’s only made for receiving mics power signals.

Hey Fredo, thank you for the video. I saw a few reviews, especially the ones by Curtis Judd and Wayne Recs that have made me think twice before going for the mic 2. In my opinion, the sound quality doesn't really stand out, but I'm thinking of getting a lav mic, which could probably allow for better sound. Did you test it with a lav mic as well?

I know that you can’t compare a wireless mic quality with a dynamic mic, I am comparing the mic 2 raw with rode Podcast mic and the difference in quality is insane.. Of course rode wins. I am thinking to order the Rode wireless Pro and compare the quality side by side and keep the winner.

My claim is that the DJI Mic 2 is powerful enough to run a SHURE SM7DB. Video demonstrated that, also I claim that the DJI Mic 2 kit is replacing my Zoom F3 audio interface.

Ok...he conveniently doesn't mention that he using the shure sm7Db and not the shure sm7B because the sm7db has a built in PRE-AMP!!! OF COURSE IT'S GOING TO WORK IT'S ESSENTIALLY A POWERED MICROPHONE

You the type to microwave mac & cheese wrong and complain. The preamp is disabled during the entirety of the video, it’s solely the DJI Mic 2 pushing power to the SM7DB. I would not recommend trying to enable the preamp in this application, watch the video again and try paying attention.

It's not "incredibly impressive" when you have DJi 2 powering something that has a built in gain booster in it. If you got the DJ to power a tradition SM7B be itself, that would be impressive.

The built in gain booster is off, that’s whole reason I made the video.

Lol loud n wrong. So just so I understand basically to make this work. All you need is a XLR to 3.5 mm adapter? And then all I need is the Shure mic and then the DJI Mic 2?

@@whynotmoney777 correct and it works with almost any XLR mic. Can link you to the exact cable I use people have mixed experience as not all 3.5mm to XLR cables are created equal.

Bro!! Been watching your content a few weeks now! You're the first to mention the DJI mic 2 release date for me, I am definitely going to be ordering mine today. I had the first version but returned them after a couple weeks when I filmed a friend's wedding and the lav miv popped out (but I popped back in right after thinking it was fine) and failed to record the audio, it sucked! thankfully I had a shotgun mic on my A74 which caught pretty decent audio which I was able to save in post. It is a weird quirk that those Mics have! Lesson learned! Anywho Keep up the great work! You are killing it right now and seeing your improvement over the past year is inspiring for folks like me who want to improve our content creating skills! Cheers!
