I am very disappointed that there's no timecode facility on the DJI system. Given that, on the Pocket 3, you can jam synch from an external clock, it's a massive oversight not to carry the timecode synch over to the TX units - given that, in many cases, users will want to avail themselves of the 32 bit float recordings onboard the TX, but will then have to synch in post via audio - something that's not always going to be possible in a multicam situation. Same applies to the Action 4 (and 3, I think) - both can be jam synched for timecode, so I just cannot understand why DJI's left this facility out. Massive shame, and means that the Rode Wireless Pro wins out. Also, the artefacts on your noise reduction tests on the pier are exceedingly distracting, so I doubt I'd be using that - much better to have finer control in post, IMHO, than have the DJI decide what it's going to do. Similarly, (and not just in your tests, but also on others) the noise reduction is too aggressive anyway, leaving the resultant audio sounding false and over-processed. The viewer's eyes and ears do not deliver the same story - in a noisy environment, some of the background noise needs to come through, otherwise, again, it sounds false. Further - no data transfer from TX units when mounted in the charging case? Why ever not? Another massive oversight. PLUS... the Rode system at 50 bucks more gives you two (count 'em) very decent lavs (usually retailing at a hundred notes apiece), while DJI has decided not to include their "accessory" lavs in the package? Nope - I think DJI has seriously missed the boat on this one. They're competing with, perhaps, the Rode Wireless Me two TX system, certainly not the Wireless Pro system.
@VandromedasTravels
@VandromedasTravels 4 ай бұрын
Just to add - since you've obviously got a better track to DJI than many of us - will they, do you think, address the timecode aspect of all of this in a future firmware update? Sorry, but I am severely disappointed by this half-assed release.

Oh - and one further thing. It looks like you lose both noise cancelling and 32 bit float if you use a bluetooth connection to a phone or Action 4/ Insta 360 wossname. Can you confirm?

I am a TV cameraman for years and I ordered DJI Mic 2. Seeing the reviews I was a bit worried that the sound would be lacking some presence. I received DJI Mic 2 yesterday and made some tests. DEACTIVATING LOW CUT MAKES A HUGE DIFFERENCE. Then the voice is much more full, bass comes back and the sound of this tiny thing becomes amazing. Definitely be aware this is a really important setting. Really impressed so far.

Is it just me or does the Rode Mics sound fuller? When you're walking around on the pier, I get that there's a lot of environmental noise but I think I'd prefer that over that overly digitized sound of the DJI noise cancelation. 🤷🏻‍♂

Yeah, it does sound much better when you compare the recordings - both outdoors and indoors. And the noise cancellation on DJI is unusable. I'm kind of surprised David did not comment on that and decided to go with DJI - while I do prefer the look and form factor of these, Rode just sounds so much better.

For sure the Rode sounds fuller in mic, but once in post they can be equalized to sound almost identical. So the question then becomes overall system features and use case for what you need. I think the DJI is more creator focused, but if you're being paid for a gig, you have to go with the Rode for the locking lav port

I know that sound preference is more subjective, but as far as your comparison test is concerned, I prefer the DJI's, in fact the vocals are crisper and more pleasant to the ear, which is great for recording people's activities, such as character interviews, wedding ceremonies.

Crazy subjective! I played audio from both systems unedited as well as edited (Fairlight) to 27 people last week. 26 of them preferred the rode. With and without Lavaliers. I myself have a hard time deciding which platform to choose, if I’d use it as a content creator. I really prefer the rode pro sound but I also like the Mic 2 sound. And I love all those features the new DJI has. I would love the DJI with the rode sound and timecode ability.. But as I am using it as a professional I must use what the clients prefer… So I am using the Deity Theos and/or the Tentacle track e. Far superior sound quality. The sound of the rode pro is closer to them and by far easier/faster to match, so I’ll grab that as backup/addition. As a one person KZbin channel where I wouldn’t need those extra 10-20% more sound quality… I’d may choose the DJI Mic 2.

Would you know that if you had the new DJI Mic 2 from the Osmo Pocket 3, and wanted to use it with a new pair of DJI Mic 2s, would that extra one interfere somehow with the other two or mess them up in any way? I get that you can't connect three transmitters as it only supports two, but I want to use that third one to record a third person that I'll add later in post. Just wondering how I can get a third person mic-ed up. Thanks!

It just sounds more authentic….I want to hear waves 🌊 in the background when people film at the beach 🏝. I’m sure noise canceling has it place (like when I’m filming at the wife decides to run the dishwasher 😳). But for the most point I’ll probably keep noise canceling off. Thanks again! About halfway through the video, so I don’t know if you mentioned it or not, but the pro is definitely more professional. The fact that it has a locking Jack for a lav Mic is a huge deal. Not sure if you mentioned it, but the pro also has time code encoding. Absolutely must for multicam. I have successfully used the pro to generate a time code, we jammed that time code into our Tentacle track E and sync, E systems, and now we have road and Tentacle working together.

I just watched Tony & Chelsea and couldn't watch anymore after a few minutes as the audio (funny enough) was horrible (volume kept changing throughout) as was the focusing (as there was no B-roll; just trying to do it all on one take so every couple of minutes, Tony would try to show something up close to the camera and it would take a while to refocus). The DJI Mic 2 that came with the Pocket 3 is the exact same transmitter, so it would fit in the system the same, but anytime you put the mics in the charging case, they'll automatically pair with the DJI Receiver and you would need to repair them with the Pocket 3 each time. I picked up the combo with the Pocket 3, so with this, I now have three transmitters total. I'll just keep the Pocket 3's charged via USB C and clipped onto the hard case so I don't get them confused with each other

Regarding the DJI case not being big enough, looking at the soft case that also comes with it I'm thinking the mics and receiver can be stored in the 3 little pockets and guess what...they fit with the wind muffs on. You'll need a second something to hold the accessory lavs and the 1/8th inch headphone cable thingy anyway. Hard case is there if you need to charge? Unzip, grab the mic(s), the receiver and the cord you need and go skipping the need to also open the metal charging case. Allows the mics to discharge a bit more for better battery health?....I'm rambling. Really appreciate this review, and the follow up about the pass filter.

It seems to be only through the receiver. I haven’t been able to enable the noise cancellation via the transmitter alone. I thought there’d be a button to press, but the manual doesn’t refer to the noise cancellation via the transmitter.

On the beach the Rode Wireless Pro definitely sounded better to me, do you think it was that noticably different or could it have been the placement of rhe mics on your shirt?

Same mic. That's why DJI sell a single mic/RX combo. You can run 2 mics into the OP3 via BT if needed.

I've not tried it myself@@kirtanforthesoul but my understanding is it is an identical mic. I see no reason why it shouldn't - it simply wouldn't make sense for DJI to make a different one.

When listening on my XM5 headphones, you can really hear the processing on the DJI Mic 2's in the NC mode. It sounds like you're talking into a fan on the highs and now I know that in the intro you were using it for your main audio source because the same effect happened there and on the beach tests. I had a similar effect when watching Gene's video, so any sort of low-pass filter if its on needs to go because it's processing too much of the highs. Otherwise I wish RODE or DJI both made better cases, and you really can't go wrong with either though the direct touch controls and BT support (even if it is squashed to the BT Codecs) is handy to have. So are the white receivers.

Is the charge case available on its own? I've got an Osmo pocket 3, and a mic 2 that came in the creator bundle, and it would be cool to buy a case, another TX and the RX to complete the set!

I thought the rode sounded better but I then remembered that I almost never rely on just the transmitter and usually use a lav. I’d like to hear a sound comparison using lavs on both systems. The one thing I do like about the rode is the ability to connect a usb to your comp and have all transmitters mounted whereas DJI transmitters need to be connected separately

With the Røde Pro you get two nice Lavalier II mics of decent quality and secure mounting. While you certainly could use some Røde lavalier or other lavalier mic with the DJI system, DJI has its own mic with angled connector to prevent dislodging it from the transmitter as well as securing the cable on the clip. So mics without the angled connector would not be optimal. And the DJI Lavalier mic is quite cheap so it would be a big surprise if audio quality is the same as the Rødes.

Can you adjust the noise cancellation level? In some cases like at the beach you still want a bit of background noise otherwise like when you were on the pier the complete noise cancelation makes the video stail. DJI without cancelation on the beach sounds like garbage. You had to show a Rode with noise cancelation in post procession to make this a fair and valid review. With that said, I do like DJIs additional features like bluetooth, receiver, and usb c mounting to phone adapter.

Any chance a better lavalier microphone could get better sound out of the DJI kit? I like everything about it but sound quality is everything and it's really lacking, even the Rode isn't great but definitely has much more "life" to it. Such a hard choice. I've been using a 32 bit float recorder clipped to me with a good lav mic and syncing in post.

Did you have an EQ on the rode mic bc in comparison there is a lot of bass and muddiness coming from the DJI mics and there’s just so much more clarity in the Rode mic. Idk if it’s just the default we with your voice but the dji didn’t sound as crisp as the rode.

Cool comparison of the newest toys! :) While the noise cancelation function of the DJI mic is cool, personally from watching this video, I immediately notice that the onboard mic of the Rode Wireless Pro seems to pick up the bass frequencies a lot better.

Thanks, I thought i was the only one hearing that. This is the reason i'll be holding on to the Rode, its picking more natural frequencies of the user compared to the DJI which sounded like a High Pass Filter is applied.

Only real advantage of the DJI Mic 2 IMHO, vs the Rode, is the ability to link via bluetooth. That would be great connecting it to an OSMO Action 4 camera w/o a cable. The noise cancellation is a nice feature, BUT I did hear some slight 'digital effects' during the sample recording on the beach that really took away from the 'professionalism' of the recording. I'm would hope that is fixable with a firmware update. I have an older single Tx/Rx Rode system and looking to upgrade to a dual Tx. At this point I'm not sold on either. If Rode would upgrade their system to connect wirelessly to any camera along with selectable noise cancellation, that would make it IMHO a hands down choice to go with. Thanks for the video and comparisons.

I would say that the USB-C/Lightning connection is another big advantage for the DJI. Connecting the Rode Pro receiver to a phone, action camera or Drone transmitter is just annoying and DJIs system pretty much solves this.

Locking Lav ports and timecode sold me on the Rode Pro. those are killer for my videography work flow. The noise canceling just doesn't sound good. i would much rather control that in post vs all or nothing in the DJI system .
