Thanks for the video. Have you tested at how long distance you can keep the mic from your head and still get good quality audio? I have been really trying to research this thing. I'm thinking whether I should buy a shotgun mic or would DJI Mic be reasonably good
@JimmyJinIA Жыл бұрын
Only thing that's not mentioned that IS worth mentioning is that some of the features Jeven mentions are new features. I hadn't updated my DJI Mic firmware since purchased...'cause I had no problems. I'm guess sooo many people who have had this for better than a year haven't looked for an update. Features since they first came out are: REC Stop Lock Auto Record LED Brightness (both RX and TX) Auto RX Power Off Option The main menu I'd also altered and easier to go to the RX settings. Thanks Jeven! Great Vid, this really helps explain some settings and would have saved me hours of trial and error.

Just a quick tip for folks synching their backup recording in post using Final Cut Pro : - Import your video and your audio file, then select "create multicam clip". This will usually instantly synch your audio with your video. Saved me a lot of time!
@danmohan1981 Жыл бұрын
I'm a pro-audio guy. Pretty good explanation, but to clarify gain staging, the steps ought to be 1) set the transmitter gain so it is in the range you desire (probably just into the yellow as an average), 2) set the receiver gain so that it is also averaging just into the yellow, 3) set the camera input gain so it is averaging just into the yellow. This is common gain staging technique, and once you've done it a few times, it's really easy to do on-site and on-the-fly. Every scenario is going to be different, so it really ought to be done for each shoot. As for the low-cut, 150hz is a little on the high side, so I would generally suggest leaving the low-cut off and adding a filter in post if it's needed. For reference, most audio consoles that have a low-cut button (and no adjustable frequency) have it somewhere between 80 hz and 120 hz.

Could I ask a specific question : I will be recording some shots in which there will be chainsaw use. So, medium / loud audio while saw is idling, then very loud audio when the saw is running full throttle. Are the "safety" channels sufficient for this kind of recording or should something different be done? Just curious.
@danmohan1981 Жыл бұрын
@@SouthernItalyHomestead Unfortunately, the answer is, "it depends". I suspect that the safety channel will be a sufficient differential, but maybe a creative edit where the sound of the chain saw is covered by music may be a good option if it doesn't work out.

Something worth mentioning, the effect of reciever gain on dji mic does not display on its screen, or the monitoring headphone pluged into dji mic reciever. Only the camera audio level bar or headphone pluged into camera is affected by reciever gain.

Exceptional video, Jeven. Lots of invaluable information, clearly explained. Kudos to you! Two small things I noticed: At 5:56, after talking about the 6db pad on the Mono with Safety track, you say that the backup recording is "-20db lower." I knew what you meant--that's it's actually -6db--but it might cause confusion to some. The other thing is something I just learned moments ago on another excellent KZbin tutorial--after you update to the new firmware released in January (Vers. 2.00.72.87), you can now completely turn off the LEDs on the transmitters while using them. Granted, this is not about sound, but I thought you might like to know. All in all though, this was an outstanding tutorial and I'm grateful you took the time to make it.

Best advice is to lower the camera gain as far as possible, because that's generally where noise is introduced the most (especially with Canon cameras). Then you have only TX and RX to worry about.

I just stumbled upon this comment, how low you mean, if its 0 doesn't record audio even with mic on, if its 1 its super low. I had my camera mic gain at 23 and the dii transmitter at 0 and picked up so much background noise at a convention event, was pretty pissed.
@meteoroz Жыл бұрын
@@KN-mi7mh You have to try with different values to find the sweet spot, but keep the camera gain value as low as you can while still getting a decent signal. There should be some kind of audio meter in the camera to show you the level being picked up, so use that to keep around -6 db max.
@kennethcoxg Жыл бұрын
@@KN-mi7mh i'll give you my personal example, i usually work with canon camcoders and set the camera volume between 15 and 20, auto gain is too high, from there, i set the rx gain in a -5 and tx gain +4, works fine at loud enviroments, i usually do live streaming of youth football so the crowds are very noisey here in Mexico, but you have to sometimes play with the mic values depending on how loud the backround noise is, if it´s too loud i go down in the rx at a -6.

I watched your beginners tutorial. I was specifically interested in the sound settings (mono, stereo, mono s), technicalities aside, I found the most intuitive way to set the sound up to your desired channel/setting was simply to plug in some external headphones to use as monitors while you are setting up. That gives instant feedback while you play with the settings. Quicker than recording various clips, uploading to your computer, trying to ascertain what speaker the sound is coming out from. This method gives you realtime feedback. Great video by the way. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you so much for all these great tutorials. I just got this set up and have been trying to plan on the most effective way to use it. I will be using it to film hunting content . Therefor only rolling with audio when there is action or dialog. I would say there will be dialog in the beginning of each video with some sort of interview before going into the woods filmed with a action cam or cell phone . Instead of hooking it to my phone or action cam to record a 1 min segment would it be best just to record straight into the transmitter? While going into the woods there may be some Dialogue here and there would it be best to keep that transmitter rolling or will that just be too much to edit in post? It may take 10-60 min to get into a spot to hunt. I could also just turn the transmitter on when needed for dialog on the way in but I’d rather not have to remember to do that. I will likely have my action cam rolling on the way in to the spot. Once in the spot I think I will record the audio straight into my canon g50 with the receiver and using the transmitter as a lapel. This would only record audio when the cannon is recording tho which I think would be best for editing. I would also have a splitter so I could record with the shotgun mic on my cannon and my DJI. Just trying not to complicate the editing process more than I have to. The other option would be l to record the audio into my action cam with the receiver and lapel style but I normally have that plugged into a external batt source already. Am I looking at that right or does this sound complicated to what you would do? Thanks again sorry for the long winded comment

Great video I'm glad to see DJI adding features. It absolutely wipes the floor of the competition. I noticed from the audio 52 teardown that both the transmitters and receiver have a powerful NXP SoC. What id like to see is some different recording options like the ability to record in compressed audio such as aac or MP3. Like wise I'd like to see lossless formats like FLAC. The processor has more than enough capability for this. Some effects would be nice too like pad maybe reverb? Again the SoC has more than enough power to do this, the pad for example would be very hand to have.

I was planning on use the dji mic on each person so there'd be 5 recordings. Of course I'm going to play around with different settings but based on that info what would you say would be the best settings in regards to mono/stereo or do you think it would be better to just hit record on all transmitters and have them all set to mono? I have a feeling I'm going to run into a lot of problems so any advice from you or anyone reading this would be very helpful. Thanks for the videos mate by the way I've been following them for a while and they have helped me out, very clear and to the point 😎

Adjusting the audio level at the right level without distortion is not the problem. I've adjusted all three gain settings (transmitter, receiver and Canon M50 camera) to get the best sound (+8 on the transmitter, +5 on the receiver and as low as possible on the camera seemed to work the best). The problem is the sound just sucks. I can't really describe it other than it just sounds cheap and not real. I couldn't even tweak it enough in Resolve to be acceptable. Taking the sound from just the transmitter is a little better than running it through the entire set-up. Being on the talent side of the glass, not the tech side, I've recorded 1,100 movie sound tracks as a French horn player. Take it for whatever it's worth. Disappointed with this product and all the hype. The videos are good, Jeven. My only criticism is maybe just get to the point a little faster.
