I stopped watching when you got to where the drone last reported it’s location. But you were handicapped by its dead battery and its color against all the snow. Just a tip. VIFLY makes a motion activated buzzer beacon that only weighs a couple grams for drones. They are about $15 each. You attach it to the drone (I use Velcro so I can move it from one drone to another) and when the drone stops moving for a few minutes it starts emitting a uniquely high pitched beep and flashes a little green strobe light. I think fully charged it is supposed to run for over 24 hours. Check it out. I love the gadget. And I have put red reflector tape, common to any auto supply store, o my drones as well. I had one go down in tall grass and the red tape caught my eye immediately. Great video!

I have been flying the original Mavic Pro for years and it has served it's useful life. I started looking around at all the different models of drones and zoned in on the Mini 3 Pro. I have one coming later this month and I am jazzed about doing the upgrade. I lost line of sight with the Mavic Pro within minutes so it should be just seconds with a quiet mini drone. I always got kind of a knot in my stomach when the drone went out of line of sight but with these new drones and three-way obstacle sensing with decent looking "bypass" flying technology that looks like it all works, I think I may be more comfortable with it. I am happy to see that this mini is stable enough in the wind and these range tests confirm that I should not have a problem getting the kind of video and images that I would be after even at height and a ways away. I have watched maybe six KZbin videos on the Mini 3 Pro and two of them were range tests. Watching a drone fly along for five miles is pretty impressive especially in sub freezing temperatures. Both videos I watched for range tests ended up in forced landings and damage. So the take away for me was that the "useful" range looks like around 1.5 miles if someone is going to spend time doing photography and then get it back to the home point on one battery. It is definitely impressive and I am looking forward to flying with it.

From my cold weather experience with my DJI Mini 3 Pro, I find that my lack of use of adequate winter gear gave me the most challenge. Trying to use the controller without gloves in cold weather is very difficult especially if you have a shaky hand already. My coldest flight was at 5° Farenheit, but was a flight that did not go beyond my driveway. Nice scenery during video, thanks Dustin.

Thanks for this awesome video Dustin! What I cannot understand is that you've got 276K subscribers and only 1.4K likes. You (spoiler alert) taught us the limits of the DJI Mini 3 Pro, pushed to the upper limit, lost your drone, went on a search and rescue mission alone in the dark with a flash lamp and some food and water in your backpack but did not find the drone. Went to bed with some regrets and swears, asked your son Ken to join you on a second S&R mission that was successful! Man, you deserve at least 100K likes! I hope you have the DJI Care Refresh insurance and got yourself a brand new mini 3 pro. I would have landed that thing on my mom's porch if I were you. Nice story, thanks again!

36:30 You would have made it just in time (in spite of the RTH thing) because at 23mph you were clicking off 2000ft per min and was lining up just right, but then it dropped way down to the teens mph and there was no batt margin for that. So at that low of batt the speed drops too much to count on same pace home. Awesome vid as usual.

My Mavic 2 was did the same pausing during RTH, as if it was stopping for an obstacle. I double checked that the sensors were turned off before having to manually fly home. I did some searching through the settings, and under "advanced" I saw "use obstacle avoidance during RTH," which overrides your settings even if you had obstacle avoidance turned of for normal flight. Lesson learned on that one! Damn near had force land in the trees.

Impressive. It's possible for me to cover ~4.5-4.7 miles and return to my starting point without much difficulty (10-15% battery). In my opinion, wind plays a huge factor -- the drone exerts more effort during its return journey, particularly at higher altitudes, depending on the direction and strength of the wind.

The return to home pause problem may have been because touching the joysticks may have canceled the RTH function. I just watched another Mini 3 Pro range test done in Pakistan. He made it out to 11KM or 6.8 miles, but ended up being about a mile short of his launch point. He decided to put it down in a freshly mown field when he got the forced landing notice. P.S I think I'll order a bright orange skin when I order my drone.

Great video, sorry to hear about the damage. Finding the Mini 3 in the snow is rough. I had a drone fail where it dropped from about 150ft and tumbled down a tree and into the snow. It was powder and the drone got covered when it hit the ground and I ended up stepping on it with my snow shoes and broke an arm. Thankfully it only ended up being an $89 fix from DJI and the ended up sending me a new drone. Thanks for the great video!

Geez ... another hair-raising adventure. I think I should have a couple of shots or some valium before I watch your "range test" videos ... they are always heart stoppers! I kept saying (while you were coming back/down) "Keep it up high .. altitude is your friend". Since this was a replacement unit, and you may or may not have done updates, you should check ALL the settings. A lot of times settings get changed after an update. The RTH action may have been set to 'hover' instead of return to home. Anytime there is any kind of update, I recheck all the settings on my M3P. Well, glad you got it back .. nice to have an extra set of eyes to help. Oh, & you're probably correct about the cold affecting the plastic, making it brittle. Hope you get it fixed & back soon. My M3P is my 'go to' UAV now .. just so easy to get in the air. Cheers!

I thought I mentioned what happened with some on screen text but here's the deal: The 100' RTH was reset to 326' for some reason (perhaps it reset during an update before flight which I overlooked). The drone will go up to it's RTH height before moving forward but not the other way around (should be able to manually descend to RTH height without issue while it's moving forward unless this has changed with updates). I had thought I could come down to 100' while in RTH so every time pushing down on stick it would cancel RTH, stop forward movement and descend, then when stick was released RTH would re-engage and try to climb to 326'. It did seem like there was something else going on before I turned off RTH. Seemed to just be sitting there even with all hands off sticks at 326' so I took over manually. Perhaps if I just let it be with hands off sticks when it engaged RTH it would have been fine even though it was @ 326'. I was just worried about wind that high. Have a feeling it would have made it back had I let it do its own thing 😂🍻

Wish these drones had a separate on board power source separate the propulsion, specifically reserved for beeping and flashing the done during recovery. Something that retains enough juice to flash and beep hours after the main battery dies. I'm probably going to order one today though anyway. Would you recommend the Mini 4 Pro over the AIR 3? I already have 4 plus batteries & 3 regular batteries for my wife's Mini 3 & my Mini 3 Pro. That reason has me leaning towards the Mini 4 Pro, but if you think the AIR 3, brings more to the table, I would seriously consider getting the AIR 3 instead.

Have you gotten it fixed or replaced? Hopefully you have. Also do you plan on getting the Mini 3 non pro? I would like to see what range you would be able to get with it. I have both mini 3 and mini 3 pro. I got around the same distance with both. But the area that I flew in has a lot of wifi, and cellular towers and even a radio station and TV station antennas I counted 8 cellular towers so I don’t get very good range like you do and I am only getting close to 10,000 feet. And it’s the same with all of my Dji drones mini 2, mini 3, mini 3 pro Air 2 and Air 2s I know it has to be the location because I actually took my air 2 and tested it in a location with less interference and got around 20,000 feet. I would love to see what the mini 3 could do in your location. It only has ocusync 2 but it has 2 antennas and I think that helped increase the range. Great flight though. I was really confused when you had an issue with the RTH not sure why that happened. No doubt you would have made it back had it worked properly.

Exhilarating as always Dustin. Flying in the thin air at 7000' used more power. In the cold the arms snap off easily. I broke one off from a 3' fall. Might want to try a Max Range test where you ignore the battery, fly out until signal is totally lost, stop when signal returns, then land at an easily accessible location for retrieval. Don't forget to reset the Home Point above the remote landing site else RTH will kick in when signal drops as it lands.

Great video Dustin! 👌A real nail biter!! and beautiful scenery. I concur with your assessment of the fragility of the M3Pro. Had a low speed, low altitude (3m) active track crash and had to return to DJI as it cracked the R rear arm at the motor casing. That was the second crash!! The first was another low altitude (2m) crash into a tree trunk. As I pushed the R stick forward, a wind gust pushed it sideways 🙄 On that occasion, the rotating joint on the front L arm was damaged.! I was flying the Mini2 for a while before and it was a lot more robust. Thx for taking the risks to inform the rest of us. Great work 👍

I can remember a time with my mini 2 where I flew out at night. I was flying into the wind like I’m supposed to but on return home the drone was flying soooo slow. Needless to say I didn’t recover it that night so the very next morning I tracked it to a home. The owner came out with his son and said he would check his backyard. He returned stating he didn’t see it so I asked if I could look. And lo an behold it had landed in the middle of their trampoline 🤣 Talk about luck 🤷‍♂️ but thank the lord. I’ve never had a drone that didn’t make it back as much as my mini 2. And I can’t really see what my mini 3 can do because the range sucks on the new rc😅

Great vid, as always... One thing I did learn is that New Mexico actually gets cold and snowy - never realised. Always thought it was dry, dusty and hot!

Not to derail the discussion, but my wife is from New Mexico, and the first time I went with her to visit her family, I was stunned at how mountainous and beautiful it is. Ive only ever passed through New Mexico on the way to the Northwest or the Southeast states when I was a kid. Anyway, I confided in my wife after the trip that I was dreading it because I thought it was going to be flat, dusty, dry, cactus, boring, etc. etc. I was so delighted to be wrong, and now I get just as excited for trips to see her family as I do mine. Also, she loves to jab me about my misconception of her home state. lol New Mexico is beautiful and diverse.

Impressive range for sure, but how can you see such a small drone with the "naked eye" at more than 5 miles ? Does the VLOS rule not apply to the Mini 3 Pro with the plus battery ?

of course, my bad - I probably missed the controller part in the VLOS section when I was studying for the Part 107 exam - it must have been in the using binoculars for VLOS section@@SkyTechCinema-ni7dm

I'm thinking they sacrificed some durability to save weight since they added those sensors and a larger battery compartment. Possibly thinner plastic and are the arms a bit longer than the mini 2? I am pretty impressed by the durability of the mini 2 having crashed it once in winter going 15mph into some branches and it survived with some broken propellers only. Another crash in warmer weather again just some propeller damage. Still want to get a mini 3 though for that incredible flight distance wow😮.

I believe the H indicator is based on where the drone was launched so once the drone left your mountain the H was actually much higher than indicated.

Correct. It's launch altitude is always zero.

I love my DJI Mini 3 Pro but have had one big problem with it that has almost been a deal breaker. It randomly loses connection with the app on the DJI RC2 controller... but stays connected to the controller. This is an absolute nightmare when flying in tricky spots relying on the video feed and 95% of my flights are over the ocean so when it happens I automatically think it's fallen into the ocean for a few seconds. Do not need the stress.

Sounds like your video signal is dropping quicker than control. Try more of an unobstructed path from drone to controller and point it towards the drone.

I purchased the DJI Care 2 year insurance and used 1 of 2 flyaway replacements last month - due to battery depletion in the Oregon Outback. Took the "final flight" coordinates from the RC and used a Garmin handheld GPS to pinpoint the drone, but couldn't get to it. Should I return someday and make a successful recovery of the lost Mini 3 Pro, DJI says they own it!

Hello, Drones in Europe are limited in terms of distance because of European restrictions which require keeping the drone in sight during the flight. I wanted to know if you could make a video that speaks from a technical point of view of how the drone is bricked. Is it a software restriction, or more precisely on the transmission power inside the drone? Or the European applications that limit the range of the drone? And if possible, how to bypass these European restrictions. Thanks in advance.
