The Chimera7 Pro V2 you got for a review has a FC that's sold as 9V 2A. It's rated and tested for >2.5A constant and hot (without cooling) which can supply >22.5W. The measured maximum power draw is 15W and only when running the ham file. Since I've explained in other videos, we have feedback from DJI that there's a firmware issue with the Radio Controller 2 that's being worked on. The network generated by Goggle, O3 and RC2 randomly fails and doesn't recover.

Straight to batt for my units. My logic is if you overload a circuit on the FC its more likely to cause issues with the flight and I suspect higher chance of crashing. If you have a problem with voltage and lose an air unit you could still RTH or float it down in angle mode and have less pieces to pick up. I can only guess that the engineers at DJI already have good filtering in the air unit circuit to deal with things since they rate the input up to 6S.

Hello, I need help! - I have a new set of DJI Goggles 2 and a New Dji 03 Air Unit... I want to simply run the camera without a flight controller so I can install it in an RC Car. All I need to know is how to get power to the Air Unit using an independant 4s Battery. I don't need all the OSD stuff, Just powered on, so I can install the Firmware on both the Goggles and the Air Unit. What cable do I need to make up to get this going? ( I also have a fan and a heat sink ready for it too) There has to be a simple way to power it up surely without '' all the quad gear '' If anyone can help me, I'd be willing to pay for your time. I live in Australia and really want to use the system. I have searched what seems like the entirety of KZbin for what I've just explained, But everything is about quadcopters. NO! Yes, for any one, but the increased failure potential from small wires/connections from ESC, up to FC, then into BEC, then out ANOTHER cable to the O3 for something that is mission critical (had two crashes because something was loose or pulling, and maybe not from BEC).

Some FC's did have the digital port that output tied to vbat, with all the 'use with Air unit' warnings attached. these would work asis. It applies to the Beast F7 AIO, not the Beast STD AIO 30mm F7 though it has a 10V regulator built-in that is insufficient. The STD unit incorrectly has the warning attached also, which I never figured out why with a 10V regulator in there. I believe the STD was simply a replacement product made only for their ProTek 35.

If I understood well, the DJI product manager for Europe, Ferdinand Wolf said during the recent interview from Chris Rosser that the 03 air unit has a variable power output according the requirement of the signal transmitted to the goggles, therefore are you sure your new test is pushing the 03 air unit at the maximum power arming the controller with the air unit being so close to the goggles? Isn't necessary to get the air unit far away from the goggles to get the max power? Thank you for your review as usual absolutely amazing 🤩

According to the interview put out by Chris Rosser, DJI is saying that because the O3 system is "auto" frequency hoping they are able to out put more power than we could prior when we were manually selecting the channel. 2w perhaps? 🤔

Not really. That’s low power mode. There is no logic that turning off low power mode still restricts RF output. It basically makes low power mode close to pointless.

@@MadRC I guess except, like I said if you're going over your settings, including turning off "low power mode", adjusting the goggles, etc, it's not necessary for the unit to put out the highest transmission power until the drone is armed. What's the point of having it output full signal sitting on a table until you're ready to take off? Having it stay in low power until you're ready to fly, helps with battery life, thermals, etc in my opinion. I've seen guys dick around for 5 minutes before actually launching. The only "negative" to the way it's programmed to work is that it messed with your tests. Hahaha! Low Power Mode allows you to fly at low power, right? Again, so you're not stomping on other pilots. When you turn off LPM, it switches to high output once you launch. Makes sense to me anyway... Obviously, we all can have our opinions, right?

@@MCsCreations Um what issue? Wait, how do you use an O3 Air Unit without a flight controller? Technically, the concern is that the O3 draws to much current THROUGH the flight controller BEC. If you're "not using a FC"... well then, you're problems are solved... I'm not sure what you're doing at that point? Setting up a remote camera? Mounting the O3 unit to a balloon? Attaching it to a stick and using it to perform a colonoscopy on yourself? Hmm... I guess there are options!

I have the skystars h743hd fc. I would power my o3 from 10v but I cant find the maximum current nowhere in the documentation. This is why I power it from a pad called "filtered vbat". According to the documentation this pad is supposed to power the vista. Yesterday while flying (it was very windy) my o3 rebooted mid flight. Could the adjustments that the motors had to constantly make cause a voltage spike and force the au to reboot?

Hi there, I hope you can help. I have 2x O3 units, 1 in in my flywoo explorer lr 4 and works perfect with gyroflow. My other unit in my freestyle quad does not... when I import the file (flying with wide screen option 16x9 with dcinelike) the video in gyroflo is just black. Disabling stabilization shows the video again. Using Rocksteady has no issue. Air units are on the latest firmware. Any ideas? Also, how do you get the country code not updated error message to go away in the bottom right ?

I just got my first O3 air unit and set things up. One of the things that I noticed is that it seems to heat up quicker when connected to the goggles. During part of my setup, my needed the goggles on for positioning OSD elements and I had to work fast while doing this to reduce it heating up. The next day, I changed ESC settings and it didn’t appear to heat up nearly as much. Because of this, I think the best way to do the first flight with a craft that has GPS is to start with the goggles off until getting a GPS fix. Would love to see additional testing of this to see if I am right about this behavior.

ESC or flight controller settings (besides your msp connection) do not not affect the VTX/ O3 air unit in any way. When you had it connected to your goggles , the goggle was sending a signal to increase the power level as its variable powe.A lot of people power their GPS off of a pad that can be powered by USB, then use a USB connection to get the fix then plug in full lipo voltage. You could also use a fan to cool the unit. Been doing this with gen 1 air units and vistas for years

My point was that I didn’t need to power the goggles on for this like when I was checking to see that the OSD items were not over the DJI ones. Will have to test this more but think that if the air unit has not received a signal since being powered on, it may generate less heat. ELRS modules do this by staying at low power when powered on while using dynamic power until armed. The air unit may do something similar to this. I’m still going to do my next build with the JB F7 and use a switch n transmitter to power down the air unit until I get a fix.

The BEC is often on the FC, but regardless, the manufacturers should be spec'ing things out. I'd check the retail site or documentation/manual (if applicable), or contact them directly if you feel so inclined. So the real question then becomes - how much do you trust the manufacturer?

Just got done moving my power / ground off the BEC from the FC, as I kept getting the O3 air unit rebooting (this on a brand new GepRC Mark 5). Keep in mind, my FC has a 3A 12V BEC (rated). Usually the reboot would happen when high G flip or once, when I belly flopped down on ground just a little too hard (that made me think it was cabling/crack/connection issue). Originally thought it should be when doing high current punch maybe allowing BEC to brown out. Nope...had it happen more often during a throttle down (right after a quick blip). *poof* reboot..no video. Caused two crashes before I'd had it. Too many cables going from ESC out a cable to the FC, out that cable into O3, so I just soldered it direct on the 4S Vbatt. So far (crossing fingers), it has fixed the issue... /shrug. YMMV, but there is at least one more line of thinking for not having a mission critical (video) cut out on you just as you execute a nice snappy front flip aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaannnnnnnnddddddd.............yeah. Panic. Sigh. 10s later when video came back, I could count the blades of grass blocking the camera. nice. sigh.

I have a Zeus F722 that has a 9v/2a BEC for the DJI system, which should be 18watts but that's if it's rated correctly. I have some spike absorbers but maybe I should also just get a 12v 3a BEC. After tax and buying a longer camera cable because they like to ship these with the shortest possible camera cable, I've got $260 in this one o3 air unit. Might as well have $270 in it and just spend the $10 on a BEC.

Hey Ian, great video. But personally I would rely on DJI and just wire it to Vbat + cap. When using a bec you can add more protection but at same time you also add an additional point of failure.. I think many people have been wiring their vistas directly to vbat and haven't heard too much problems with them..

It will, that’s normal. It gets VERY hot VERY fast. It won’t actually shut down once armed if you have the MSP configured correctly however 2-3 minutes on the bench is long enough to have issues. Also make sure you have low power mode turned on.

Hi, my airunit O3 is very hot, I can't figure out how powerful it works. I have the FCC hack installed. Does Airunit dynamically change the power or does it always work at maximum? The power meter showed ~4w in lower state mode and ~9w without it. Can I see the transmission performance in some software?

The O3 does get very hot. Yes it’s somewhat dynamic too. Just use the ham file and that’s the max output you can get. The full 15w is with recording ect.

Yes, indeed, the airunit o3 consumes about 15W while recording, but without it, about 12W. I didn't observe dynamic power changes. The power consumption doesn't differ when in close proximity, even when the signal has almost disappeared. I don't like this approach because why should my airunit O3 operate at maximum power when it's only 5 meters away from me?!@@MadRC

Totally agree. It’s all about who do you trust. DJI air unit on VBat or an iFlight BEC? I am putting my drone and cameras in the DJI corner. It’s designed to work on VBat and I never had one problem doing it that way. If it has a plug and play connector I pull the wires out and solder them to VBat. That’s a lot of money flying around. I trust the DJI equipment more than a cheap flight controller. I don’t know. Maybe DJI hires older and more experienced children to assemble their air units than iFlight does to build their boards. 😮

@@Fly_High_FPV I work in electronic controls in the commercial refrigeration business and I just never trusted these BEC’s. I had an issue with one early on in the hobby and always use VBat if possible. If something normally draws 1.5 amps or higher it should be at least a 3 amp rated voltage regulator. I spend a few extra bucks and buy higher rated esc’s as well. We put these quads through some extreme voltage spikes and sags. Better safe than sorry. And I am sorry, but I don’t trust these Chinese FPV companies. There is no accountability. If their shit fails and costs you $500 they just blame you and then ignore you.

Because of powering the unit to its limit seems risky to a lot. However, I’ve been going straight 6s with a Fettec spike absorber and cap combo. No issues in 8 months solid flying, crashes, tree hang ups, ect

Hello, I need help! - I have a new set of DJI Goggles 2 and a New Dji 03 Air Unit... I want to simply run the camera without a flight controller so I can install it in an RC Car. All I need to know is how to get power to the Air Unit using an independant 4s Battery. I don't need all the OSD stuff, Just powered on, so I can install the Firmware on both the Goggles and the Air Unit. What cable do I need to make up to get this going? ( I also have a fan and a heat sink ready for it too) There has to be a simple way to power it up surely without '' all the quad gear '' If anyone can help me, I'd be willing to pay for your time. I live in Australia and really want to use the system. I have searched what seems like the entirety of KZbin for what I've just explained, But everything is about quadcopters. Hopefully someone can help me out here. Many thanks in advance.

You just need to power it from the cable with in the specified range. The red and black cables. However please note that O3 will not go to full RF power even if you turn off low power mode. It needs an arming command from MSP

@@MadRC Thank you kindly for responding! Yes I have been thinking about these hurdles. I don't mind admitting I am a complete newb to Digital FPV, Unfortunately for me I am elderly with early onset Alzheimer's and this system was bought for me as a gift as about a year ago my doctor advised me to get a ''young at heart hobbie '' and I'm completely hooked on RC Cars and Sail Boats. I have rang around a few places in the city for help in getting them installed. ( I have two 03 Units ) But everytime I try and explain what I'm after I basically lock up and forget. Its relatively easy to remember it, But to speak it out I just end up ranting on about whatever else. I'm pretty much at my witts end now as to getting at least 1 running up. I've watched all of your video's I think on the 03 and it looks fantastic. I really really am impressed by your vast knowledge mate. I wish I could harvest it somehow. I think DJI makes better shit and the chances of losing your you’re whole rig due to a BEC failure on a cheap cut rate garbage flight controller is much higher then a DJI Air Unit dying from wiring it straight to VBat. It’s designed to run off of VBat and I just trust that feature more than an iFlight BEC. And that goes for all of them. I lost an Insta360 Go 2 on that crash. The drone was a complete loss. The only thing that survived was the Vista! There is technical theory as to why we do things the way we do and there is real life experience. I always wire Air Units to VBat and never had a problem. Lost about $500 worth of shit due to a HGLRC flight controller with a piece of crap BEC. Never lost anything from wiring any DJI air unit to VBat. Life experience.
