The Action 3 looks like a very good action camera after all the firmware updates to improve it. DJI does the same with its drone, they are much better after about six to nine months of firmware update improvements. The Action 3 is now a strong contender to latest releases from GoPro, the Hero 10 & 11. I got scared off by all the focus issue talk when the Action 3 first came out and didn't order it. I have a 400 dollar paper weight thats 5 months old..go pro has zero customer service..right now im using cheap 4k@30fps cameras..at least they work and dont over heat ..about to try this 3 series DJI ..there are a few problems with it but the price is down to 199 so i will try it..

With the Action 2, with the latest firmware you can record gyro data and stabilize in post in Gyroflow (free app for Windows). I thought it was the same for Action 3. The stabilization is better than in camera and you can decide parameters at your will.

As far as I know, they took down that FW update due to some issues, but I hope that will be available for both later on.

@@TheHybridShooter finally, after multiple tests, I found it extremly blurry on the edges, and cinelike mode is unusable due to lack of image quality (in 4k !!!). So, I think mine is faulty, so it's on its way for repair or replacement to dji center. Batch 2022/12.

@@Fr4p4d1ngu3 Blurriness on the edges depends on FoV setting. Naturally, you will get a lot of blur in ultra-wide and wide setting. That is to be expected with 10mm FF eqv. D-Cinelike is meant to be sharpened in post production, it is a lack of sharpening, not lack of image quality.

Seeiosly considering this as a rear view camera. I use the pocket 2 to film weekly nightride videos in Pattaya, showing the nightlife. I am eagerly waiting for the Pocket 3, but the release date never gets confirmed. My pocket 2 does an awesome job in lowlight conditions, but the susceptibility to water is an issue if it rains. Just trying to work out how to mount the Action 3 under my seat to provide picture in picture views. Do you think the Action 3 would cope in these conditions, remembering i will have no rear facing headlights 🙏🙏

Plus I drop them occasionally so would love the durability of an action cam. I only really shoot in 1080p. Just got ride of my dji action 3 for go pro 10 it over heated 3 times on my first day of use before you can use it you need to download the dji app and you can only use there software you can't plug in to a laptop and transfer your files no thats too easy if you to pay for another coded software to unlock your video plus the app wants to ask a lot of questions including your reason for use and it wants your GPS location and all your files on your phone.

Great review, thank you! I am looking at getting a small compact camera for tripping around and making some videos. We want to doucment our travels a bit more and consider using this, alongside our phones and our Lumix (20x optical zoom) compact camera. Which video editiing do you recommend? We have looked at Wondershare Filmora, iMovie (but it seems to basic) as well as Davinci... Not sure where to go with this, seems its very much undies and socks, everyone has their preference to what is comfortable. Like music software, I prefer Logic Pro and my mate hates it, much like I hate his Ableton Live (guess i just answered my own question). In filmora I do like the instant video function, all be it I am using free version, but it seems amazing for quick results. Cheers from Australia. Btw, which country are you filming this video in?

The DJI Osmo Action beats GoPro hands down in underwater footages thanks to its 4K HDR and underwater setting that does not exists in GoPro!! I lended my DJI Osmo Action 1 to my wife while I was using a GoPro 9 during a scuba dive and her footage was just WOW compared to mine!!

the clouds at 3:01 are completely blown out. the grass on the same image is blurred too. this occurs in various other shots of yours. im not convinced on the dynamic range and sharpness of the image because this happens to my action 3 as well. i do agree with your points on usability. I wish we have a gopro 11 image quality camera with action 3 usability, then that would be the best camera ever.

That is an overcast sky which is white in reality, it is not blown out. I am convinced by DR after update, I can say that it is completely fixed in FW 1.03.

@@TheHybridShooter i beg to differ.... just look at your image on 4:28. the gopro captured all the clouds, the clouds on the action 3 is blown out. i can go to post production with the gopro footage and make the cloud like the action 3, but i cannot do the opposite with the action 3 footage because the clouds are overblown. on the same image, look at the grass, same issue, you miss out the detail. I like having as much detail on the footage at the start and manipulating if i want to in post. the action 3 does not allow for that with the poor dynamic range and what appears to be focus issues. i'm not trying to hate on the action 3, i love the dji mini 3, the dji orginal osmo action. dji action 2 had good image quality but overheated. dji action 3 has great usability and doesnt overheat, but dynamic range and focus has big issues. i still prefer the original osmo action if i must shoot with a dji action camera, but currently am using a gopro 11 unfortunately due to the flaws i mentioned on the action 3.

The clouds have obviously moved in that sample + it was shot with old FW. That sample is meant for color reproduction, not for DR comparison. Hero 11 and OA3 now capture very similar amount of detail in highlights but OA3 doesn’t overexpose the shadows. Close focus capabilities are not great with either.

A teraz mi chlape povedz, ako zápasíš s prehrievaním, nakoľko kamera sa vždy spoľahlivo vypne pri dosiahnutí teploty 47°C. Čo pri 4K a 120snímkach za sekundu trvá pri vonkajšej teplote okolo 30°C tak 6-8minút videa. Pri 2.7K a 60snímkach za sekundu sa nedostaneš na 15minút videa. Podľa záberov si Slovák, a u nás podľa zákonov EU sa zariadenie musí vypnúť, po dosiahnutí 47°C. Čo znamená, že v lete necháš kameru na slnku tak 10minút a kamera sa ani nezapne... Tak teraz poraď, čo robiť na dosiahnutie na použiteľného používania kamery. Alebo vo videu uveď, že kamera je nepoužiteľná na záznam 4K-2.7K videa v rámci Európskej Únie. (Radšej by som bol za radu, ako obísť "náš" obmedzujúci zákon) Vopred vďaka za odpoveď..

Odpoveď je priamo v otázke - nenechávať kameru na primom slnku. Očakávať, od hociakej kamery že bude fungovať na priamom slnku je nerealistické. Ak vystavíš kameru takým podmienkam, je určite dobré, ak sa sama vypne. Napríklad pri točení v aute nahráva 4K neobmedzene dlho aj v lete, ešte aj s nabíjaním, čo zďaleka všetky akčné kamery nevedia.

@@TheHybridShooter nie nie, po dosiahnutí teploty 47°C sa kamera vypne-slnko bol len príklad nepoužiteľnosti v lete vonku. Pred asi hodinou som znova skúsil natáčať, v byte. Teplota v byte, a počiatočná teplota kamery bola presne 26°C merané infra teplomerom, nastavené 2.7K HDR kamera sa prehriala po 7minútach a 25 sekundách, a zastavila nahrávanie. Zapnúť nahrávanie znova, bolo možné až po vybratí a znovuvložení batérie. Zmenil som rozlíšenie na fullhd-downgrade a HDR kamera sa po 4roch minútach znova dostala na 47°C a zastavila nahrávanie. Dodávam, že displaye sa po 3 sekundách od začiatku záznamu vypínajú(tak som to nastavil,nech oddialim prehriatie) nepomáha. Buď máte no EU firmware, alebo neaktualizovaný EU firmware, ak Vám kamera nahráva aj po prekročení 47°C. Kamera s touto EU "fičúrou" je takmer nepoužiteľná pre EU zákazníkov, a na to treba vo videách upozorniť. Alebo dodať "návod" ako "splnohodnotniť" kameru pre všetkých. Aj tak vďaka za odpoveď.

@@Slovan.nie.kolaborant Ja mám 3 ks z EU aj mimo, všetky sa správajú rovnako. Ja som sa ani pri spomínanej situácii nedostal k takým teplotám, kamera bola ledva teplá na dotyk. Pri testovaní výdrže batérie som kontinuálne pri izbovej teplote nahrával 4K cez 100 minút. Action 2 má EU obmedzenia, ale tá aj ukazuje po koľkých minútach vypne. Na Action 3 počujem o takýchto problémoch prvý krát. Keďže moje skúsenosti sú úplne opačné, upozorňovať na to samozrejme nemôžem.

Kus kúpený na Slovensku vyrobený 3/2023, najnovší FW, pri 25 stupňoch v izbe zvládol 50 minút 4K 50p úplne bez problémov, určite sa teplota ani neblížila k 47 stupňom. Také prehrievanie v žiadnom prípade nie je štandardná vlastnosť Osmo Action 3, takže podľa mňa by to stálo za reklamáciu. Nehľadal by som za tým nejakú EU konšpiráciu.

I really liked this review. I used to shoot my POV driving videos with my action 2 combo but I switched to GoPro 10 because of the horribble dynamic range. Almost always my skies turned white and still the internal of the car not adequately exposed. I was really fascinated by the image quality and the dynamic range of the GoPro but missing some things of the dji such as the better battery performance. So, I was wondering. Would you recommend DJI Action 3 over GoPro (10 or 11, doesn't really matter) for POV driving videos? Would I be able to have similar dynamic range results from an Action 3? Would I have better image overall? What would you say?

You will not get as much DR as with the GoPro, but IMO GoPro cameras with dynamic tone mapping capture too much DR and produce iPhone-like hyper HDR look that I personally don't really like. Both have their advantages, I would have to make a new comparison video to answer that.

As I described below, I am still finding out how to use my Action 3 for the best result. I experimented with the D-Cinelike setting, but I have no idea how make this a nice colored looking video afterwards (I do my edits with Davinci Resolve). What for processing do you do to get a nice result?

I haven't gotten to use OA3 yet, but from your review, I can see that the "Nomal" colour and the lens has less fish-eye effect which is something I'd really prefer. While these are action cameras, I am actually using them to capture "daily life" scenes.

Thank you! There have never been any focus issues. I have 3 OA3 units, all perform the same. The only "issue" is that it can't focus as close as older action cameras, because it uses larger sensor, which means that the DoF is shallower.

I have both the OA3 and the GPH11 for 8 months, have logged hundreds of hours in videos in both. The GPH11 fails in virtually every user experience when compared to the DJI.

Does anyone have overheating problem? I can only shoot within 40 min with 1080p60fps in my car unter temp. 20 Celsius. and if with 4k60fps, in the same situation, only about 18 min, then overheating and stop recording automatically.

I have had completely opposite experience, I was able to get pretty much unlimited recording time regardless of the settings, even when with charging.

Are you EU based? I believe DJI reduced the max temp the OA3 and OA4 can work at with one of their latest firmware updates. They weren’t adhering to EU regulations that set the max working temperature to 48degress.
