The things that impress me about the Action 4 are its sound - the rest of the cameras other than GoPros were not even in the same class as the DJI - and the improved distortion to the edges of the image at wide angle. I can't wait to see your comparison of the Action 4 and the GP12!

It's really helpful for people to see a comparison with all the budget cameras so buyers can see - and hear - just what added value you get with the pricier action cameras.

Well, let me say this...the GoPro Hero 12 must be PHENOMENAL if it wants to beat this DJI Osmo Action 4. The sharpness, the vibrant colors of sky and water as shown in your comparison with the GoPro 11 and oh, yeah the low light comparison tells it all. Once in a while they make an action camera which will dominate the hall of fame as a rocksteady number 1. I am really impressed. Note: I am watching this from my 4K monitor.

Wonderful review. One of the best ones I’ve seen. So much real-world footage of what I would actually want to see to compare. Personally, I’m disappointed with the low light performance of pretty much any action cam. The stabilization can’t lock on to provide a clean image. DJI could really hit a home run if they released an improved Osmo Pocket with a much bigger sensor. Allowance for more light to come in coupled with mechanical stabilization would give you a much cleaner image. Fingers crossed.

Unfortunately the Action 4 seems to have the very typical flaws that all DJI drones and Osmo Pocket cameras have, which is horrible over sharpening (most noticeable in the background of the 1080p video section at 02:17 - and the thing with 30 / 29.97 fps footage on action cameras in general is flickering with high contrast areas. It's very noticeable on the grass with the ducks around 03:00, for example; on both camera's. Overall i think the Hero 11 has better footage in this comparison. The colors are more accurate, there is a slight background blur and it just feels more natural.

The sharpening can be turned up or down in camera. I like doing these side by side videos so everyone can select the one they prefer most as we all have different expectations and likes.

I tested both, GoPro and DJI. I prefer DJI beacuse of it's design and much better UI. I hope these cameras will someday add a flash and a good photo mode for taking great photos. I was swiming, jumping and then visited a cae in the sea. In that case, flash would be great.

Great video…well done! Action 4 looks great; perhaps more important very functional and reliable. Clearly a winner in lower light, though I tend to like the GoPro images slightly more in normal light conditions when compared side to side. OA4 just seems a little to dark for me..but maybe easily fixed in how you like to expose. All the detailed reviews of the GP 12 roll out soon, but looks like modest improvements. Not a bad thing.

Very good points! This is the most unbiased review I’ve seen so far. The hero 11 is a better all rounder. However, the action 4 really outshines it in low light so if you’re shooting mostly at nights, get the action 4 and if you’re shooting in natural light go with the hero 11. I’m patiently waiting on the hero 12 to use as my main vlogging tool because of the waterproof and robustness and I’m tired of babying my iPhone 12 Pro in the rain.

@@Tearoze fpv quads, I initially only needed 2, one for back up, if I’m on a job and a camera goes down or has problems then all is not lost, the 1st one overheated and died so I got a replacement and opted for the mini - overheated in England for crying out loud 😳😅 two weeks later one of the full size died, if I take away the hassle factor then I’m happy with the unit 💯 👍 all I want is reliability and I can’t replace a moment- to that end I’m absolutely scared sh1tless at thought of putting my trust in a GP at the moment, I want to stay with GP, everything I have is setup for GP and even though the menu’s a royal pain in the ass I can get over it, I’m rooting for GP but feel very hesitant, either way I’m excited to see all the comparison vids when the 12 drops for sure 😃✊

It's been 105*f to 108* here everyday and I have had ZERO issues with it overheating. I've seen some say that some overheat easy and I wonder if it's because they used a slow sd card which can be a huge bottleneck and create heat

There is a light sensor at the front of camera (hidden in the acti-O-n). Will the wind shield effect that?. I was thinking of making 2 very small sponges to go over the 2 mics at front, but I've heard there is a "hidden mic underneath".

For vlogging I liked the dynamic range/exposure of the Hero 11, but I dont do much vlogging and I can't/don't want to deal with the unpredictable bugging (freezing, lost audio,...) of Hero cameras anymore. You can always get a 3d printed lens hood from eBay. I bought one for the Thieye T5e because of lens flare that was really bad and it helped a ton.

Based on owning the Action 3 I must say I have had a few issues with it. Both the plastic doors have broken after very little use. Do find the power button a bit stiff to use and have also had overheating after 10 mins in a cold climate which was a real surprise. The main thing in some footage is the round lens as it seems to suffer worse than the Gopro for lens flare. Dont notice at time but some footage on review is not usable. Finally I have also noticed white lines/edges around distant objects when HDR is used in certain conditions which the GoPro doesnt seem to suffer from. Think I will wait for the Hero 12 and then maybe switch.

The FOV on the 4 is definitely wider than the 11. Using 5.7 fps vs 4.0k is better but is is it really going to be used. So many creators use 1080p. The night shots are much better on the 4. If GoPro 12 introduces a format of 8K 60fps, for example, reminds me of the old yesteryear sales pitch "wow, look how many megapixels," as many mistakingly believe is so much better. To my point, I have a Nikon D5 with 20MP. Very big, tall, robust megapixels. The camera easily takes as good of images as my Sony A1. The D5 is also superior in low light. I digress, drawing only this comparison to 8K 60 or whatever GP introduces next. Have you given any thought before the GP12 is crowned "the best ever" the serious compression it will take to transfer a file as large as 8K 60 fps? The overheating that GP have been ultra-famous for? How would one process such a file, as well? I'm more into spending my money on a camera whose manufacturer upped their processor, has minimal to zero heating issues and sensor size, etc., versus some ridiculous format that is practically useless, at least today. DJI touts one can shoot unlimited 4K 60fps and never shut down because of heat, which appears true based on reviews. The battery on the new DJI also appears to last roughly twice as long as the GP11. Sometimes less is truly better. I'm not waiting for the GP12. I'm plenty satisfied reading 90%+ favorable reviews of the DJI Osmo 4. Think they have a real winner on their hands. Please keep up the great work keeping us informed. Thanks!

True on so many notes ! 8K won't happen at all, "maybe" 6K but even then 75% of consumers won't be able to edit/play that video file. More Mega pixels is not always the answer, hence why my Sony A7SIII is a low light BEAST with it's meer 12 MP. If GoPro goes with higher MP that only means each pixel will be smaller making it less efficient in gathering light, well unless they go with a much larger sensor like a 1". This Action 4 is truly a fantastic little camera.

Action 4 should have been called Action 3 Final basically :D Got the Action 3 and just like most, I feel like we got a prototype of what should have been (the action 4) Gopro 11 still has better dynamic range and more realistic colors. Just sold my Hero11 today. Got a brand new replacement due to overheating with the original so, could sell it for the same price as I had bought it last year. I was leaning towards the Hero12, since I still have a lot of enduro batteries and other accesories. But buying the Hero12 just feels like buying a software update. Same goes for the action 4. It's just the Action 3 with "fixed focus" as expected. Although it's really nice that it has this slightly larger image sensor. But going to stay from DJI. They made a mess of the Action 3 and how they threated people with bullshit stories. I'm not going to reward them for that by buying the action 4. I was leaning towards the Insta360 RS kit with 360 lens. But that camera is kinda getting dated and still verry pricy. The internal mic's also doesn't sound that verry good from your test compared to the action 4. Feels like 2023 is not a great year for action cams hahaha. It's the year of the updates.

Two months ago, I bought an Osmo Action 3, since the beginning it had a focus issue. I took it to the authorized assistance, after inspection by the technician, he found that it had a focus issue, I left it under warranty, after two weeks they returned the camera without fixing it and did not give me another one. Advice, do not buy DJI brand camera, you will lose your money. Thanks

The video generated by osmo action 4 looks underexposed & colours looked washed out during day time The colours of video by gopro hero 11 look vibrant & colourful. The video of hero 11 wins here But in low light video comparison, osmo action 4 wins by big margin

I think the GOPRO has better video QUALITY and HDR, both CAMERAS are GREAT, the only think I don't like from the GOPRO 11 is that you can't see what you are RECORDING on the screen 😅 and with the DJI 4 you CAN.

A lot of color science is personal preference like Canon vs Sony. Regarding can’t see what you’ve recording , it does show a live preview of what you’re recording unless you’re talking about something different

@WORTHITORNOT I have the Gopro 11 Mini. The only way to see what you are recording is from the gopro app, but only Preview, once you press record, it will not let you see what you are recording.
