DJI Osmo Action 4 Sharpness & Noise Reduction Difference

In this video I test out different settings with the new DJI Osmo Action 4 for Sharpness and Noise Reduction.
This is not a scientific test so what do you think will work best for you?

question on Noise reduction in general. What does - (minus) do, decrease noise? or decrease the noise reduction enhancement that the camera does??

If it is like -2 then there is no noise reduction done in camera. Also it is better to do it in post if you have the right software and knowledge.

Thanks, all clear now. i thought minus meant reducing noise and was worried that something was wrong with my OA4's software :D now all clear, minus means reduction of the default noise being applied coz there are times i upload them without going through post.

I would use Sharpness at 0 or -1, but always have noise reduction at -2

Why noise reduction -2? Does it not make sense to put it always on +1 for less noise?

thanks a lot. For me sharpeness +2 and noise reduction +1 looks the best. DO i have any disadvantages when i film in these settings? Why u use always noise reduction -2? Thats looks not good in this video.

I will think +2 sharpness is too sharp, bug again +1 on noise reduction will reduce it a bit. But I think it is too sharp. So no other disadvantages. I do like noise better than blur footage, and I will not say it is a lot of noise here since it was cloudy and shot with not high ISO.

Hii can you please suggest the best settings for vlogging? I use it mostly for vlogging. I could not find the best settings at all 😭😭

For vlogging I will recommend: Auto ISO 100-1600, Auto Shutterspeed 1/200-1/8000s, 1080p @ 30 fps with RS or RS+ if you want the extra stabilisation.

I haven't found the best settings for lowlight motovlog and walking in general. But I have tried with +1 on sharpness and +1 on Noise Reduction with good result. But this is not the best settings. With Rocksteady you need atleast 1/200s shutterspeed for the stabilization to work. ISO 1600 or 3200 if really dark, but the it will be a lot of noise again and need noise reduction in post.

help me understand here. What is portrait mode offering differently than custom modes? It looked like the fov changed and the quality as well

Portrait mode will have more in the shot if needed, but with 4:3 you often find it will give enough hight on the footage for most social media. But when shooting vertical (portrait) you can get closer if needed to the subject. I always fix the lens adjustment in post and shoot in Ultra Wide always.

WIth D-Log M they will give same results, but if you want a video I have to wait for spring before I can make one.

They have changed how sharpness work a few month ago, and from my quick test -1 on sharpness and -2 noise reduction do look good in good daylight (sun).

If you want stabilization you need to shoot above 1/200s shutterspeed, and D-log M. But for night not more than 30 fps and ISO 1600.

I use it most for motovlogging. I watched so many videos and tried so much settings. But somehow the video always looks noisy and not crisp. Settings are 4K 60FPS. Settings on auto with EV 0,0, Shutter 1-200 / 1-8000, ISO 100-3200. I drive on normal daylight but want also a visible footage when i drive through tunnels. Sharpeness is 0 and noise reduction also. I changed so much but i dont see difference. Especially ISO on auto doesnt change anything even with changing the range. U have any setting tipps? I use 60 FPS because in POST i want build in some slow mow parts. I got light flickering but read that for youtube we should film in 30 or 60fps because of the Monitors heartrates. 25 or 50 FPS could look not so fluent.

Watched your newest video, and did you record in normal color mode? The colors are a bit too saturated. When I do motovlogging with my other channels, I record in 4:3 ratio, 4K @ 60 fps, Auto ISO 100-1600, Shutterspeed 1/200 - 1/8000, normal color, sharpness 0, noise reduction -2. I record in 4:3 ratio and later crop in post since I can get some room for adjusting tilt if it's not good.

@@rjfotovideo i record in normal colour mode because i dont know how and dont want spend time in it. Im fine with the Standard colour. Why u not use noise reduction +1? It looks way better than -2. Im bloody beginner and cut Videos only as Hobby for friends and family.

I also record i normal colors, but in evening/night I record in D-LogM to get better ISO performance. I doesn't want any noise reduction added to give sharpest footage, and if it is noisy I remove it in editor.

Stumbled upon this video and agree with your views. I want to leave GoPro. Tried an Ace Pro and returned it. I've been underwhelmed with the Osmo A4 so far as the picture just looks flat/boring. I don't want to have to do things in post-editing. Did not do that with GoPro or Ace Pro. Hopefully can find some settings that work for me.

Sorry for late answer. I always shoot in ordinary Color mode when the light is good, but in low light I use D-Log M for best performance. The colors in ordinary Color mode is more than enough and doesn't need any editing after.

You probably need to install the newest firmware. And you find it under Pro menu in Settings.

Hi. I took my first footage today. 4k at 25fpm and a few shots at 4k 120 but on play on my PC. It's all jerky and looks like it's dropping frames. Any ideas?

Sounds more like it is something with your computer. 4K require a fast graphic card.

There are a big difference regarding sharpness, and I find sharpness at 0 to work great for most of my videos where I always have noise reduction at -2 for sharpest image.

When watchin this youtube video - Set the resolution to 4K, and watch it on something else than a tiny phone :) Difference is massive.
