DJI really does have a ridiculous IO. I love it. I brought Action4 to Peru to my Ayahuasca retreat, and hooked up a DJI mic for Nat sound of the jungle. Shot it all in Dlog and I graded it alongside my Komodo, & FX3, with Blazar Remus I applied Vashimorphic template and created anamorph FAKE effects on the action footage & it fits like a glove It looks great

the best part about having more then 1 really good camera , is that hopefully dji will keep pushing gopro to improve their tech , and in reverse gopro keeps pushing the market so dji keeps making improvements on theirs as well. the true winner is people that get the best product possible. also its amazing how great the quality looks on these camera compared to 5-6 years ago.

Both the Osmo Pocket 3 as well as now the Action 5 have REALLY surprised me with their image quality. SO IMPRESSIVE! The shots from inside the car blew me away right away. And the difference to the latest GoPro is pretty substantial IMO. If I was in the market for an action cam, that shot would be enough to convince me.

I sent my GoPro back because it was not compelling enough to keep over my previous generations. I received the Osmo Action 5 a couple of days ago and I am keeping it. Even though I’m very disappointed that it doesn’t have a 1” sensor, I am pretty pleased with the low light performance. And……It doesn’t not overheat when I tested it in 103° Arizona temperatures.

Gopros hydrophobic glass is a big plus. You can see in your under the vehicle side by side shot how water beads on the dji. Waters always sticking to the lens! I was hoping they would change this on the 5.

Is there a way to get an HDMI out from the action 5? With the GoPro you have to add the media mod or whatever it is called which is annoying and more expense but I haven’t seen any option for the DJI.

Hi @cammackey. Thx for this great review. I am in the market for an action cam at the moment. I want to take Videos while surfing or in my water scooter. Because of this the water repellent feature of the Gopro lens is really intriguing for me. As I saw in your video it works a lot better than with the ap5. Especially at around TC 10:18. Were you using their lens cover while filming your shots? The GoPro seems to resell the water much better. splashing water doesn't stick. Thx in advance :)

I don't know DJI cams well, can you use this to livestream? With all the bike racing stuff we do, livestream ability would be high on the list. It's easy to pick up action cams to use with something like an Accsoon or DJI transmitter to stream through our Yololiv switchers. GoPro is pretty easy with both HDMI and USB. But, I really like the idea of using some of these cameras...

internal storage + card is huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge if it can save files to both at the same time and if not so then an update is no issue as long as the hardware can support the extra work/heat from doing so and not fry itself in the pursuit of a feature that requires hardware upgrade as well (hinting at Sony lol). too many times Gopro had people dealing with an empty memory card and got them losing their heads trying to figure out the hell happened to all the footage they captured which is 9/10 footage that can not be re-captured so this is DJI putting GoPro to the Guillotine!

I do see the DJI drips when splashed while the gopro is basically dry in the lense. Wayer repelent in the lense is important for me when filming around water…otherwise I see DJI superior to Gopro. Thank you for the comparisom👈

@@cammackey yeah the 5pro looks like AI or something in some shots , in a lot of videos i've seen on other peoples pages, not in any of your shots , I believe I would be able to make it work also with proper lighting and using d log , but I think for the average person buying it that is going to be using the 'normal" feature I believe it looks worse on the 5 the the 4 , just my opinion , but i've seen a lot of people posting that same thing ! I can't really tell the difference with the 4 and 5 with d log , although I still think they did something to push `the same size sensor on the 5 thats not natural

@@Tonellacam i think the “AI” look you’re talking about is the fact that the image quality looks border line too good to be an action camera yet the way we use an action camera isn’t like a normal camera. Like the way it’s mounted to my motorcycle.. we’re not use to seeing that angle with a big camera.. so it feels foreign. Same with the shot of my dog with her running with a stick.. it looks fake because once again we’re not use to seeing that type of image quality from that perspective. If you’re trying to say it looks A.I. because there’s clean noise performance.. isn’t that what everyone is trying to do? Get no noise lol? I add film grain to most of my stuff, granted KZbin compresses it all away. But anyways, the dynamic range and HDR on this camera is some of the best we’ve ever seen from an action camera. And not like a gross HDR either. There’s still contrast throughout the different levels of luminance sections, if that makes sense. Like highlights, mids, and shadows all have their separate contrast levels still while keeping the exposure in a safe zone. So again, I think maybe you’re processing the fact that the image quality is surpassing what were use to seeing from action cameras. It’s more true to life but the fact we’re using it like a fly on the wall perspective is trippy.

I can confidently say, I won’t be touching my Action 4 ever again cause the image quality on the 5 is so much better. I actually shot a bunch of side by sides of the 4 and 5 but didn’t use any of it in this video. Maybe I’ll do a second one. Not only is the HDR a leap forward, but I like the colors way mroe on the 5 now as well. It has more of that warm GoPro look that I think a lot of us like. On top of that, it’s fast all around. Like even doing the quick record is the fastest yet.

Tbh that 4mm chip is definitely underperforming in order to prolong battery life 🤦🏾‍♂️ The entire camera is redesigned internally, they are using a different 1/1.3 sensor and the 4nm CPU doing the processing is all new and from Qualcomm, when all their previous CPUs were DJI internal designs. the Qualcomm 8550 chip they are now using is on paper the most powerful CPU in any of the big 3 action cameras, but DJl seems to be not using many of the capabilities (for example the chip can do 4K/240, has GPS, wifi 7 and more... all of which aren't on the Action 5) and has really low bitrate apparently because a huge goal of the Action 5 Pro was to set battery life apart from the competitors... and they have, its incredible, but at what cost to image quality? I do think they will continue to fine tune their results from this new processor and hopefully firmware changes can help overall image quality, in particular in the normal 10-bit processing.

DJI is pretty good with firmware. And the bitrate wasn’t an issue for me, out all the side by sides I did the action 5 always had more clarity than the GoPro. But who knows maybe it’s affecting noise or something. And I think a lot of people forget that processors work hand in hand with sensors… sensors also have a certain output speed. So the processor might be more powerful than the sensor. And you always gotta remember… these tiny cameras can overheat. The action 5 barely even got hot.. the GoPro tho would freakin cook it was crazy

I have a gopro hero 9 and every time i use it in the winter , i have nothing but problems with the camera just shutting off in the cold and the screens on them are absolutely horrendous. I’m prob gonna end up picking up one of these dji action 5. Plus on top of all those problems you can’t record one bit in the dark .

Great comparison! Did you notice the digital sharpening in dlog m being less than the 4? It was way worse vs GoPro last gen. Btw, on the GoPros’s you always have to set the ev comp to -1 or it blows your highlights. The DJI has better DR though now anyway. I think GoPro still has better color out of cam, but advanced users can fix it on DJI with that 10 bit.

From my tests it was easier to grade the Action 5, granted I do pretty intense grading. For sharpness I had sharpness turned all the way down on both cameras and noise reduction all the way to minimum.

No people are stupid. Out of all my footage I shared, not one person commented anything about seeing bitrate issues. People are just bored haha. I was able to do some pretty intense grades on all the log footage and didn’t get any weird issues.

Good question. Not sure. The water seemed to come off the GoPro better in the side by side shots BUT I’ve had the action 5 for a few weeks and the GoPro for just a couple of days before. So I’ve had my greasy fingers all over the action 5 so could be that honestly haha. I’ll have to ask and see. If not I wonder if there’s a coating I could use cause I much prefer the action 5 overall

Well the GoPro over exposes more. What’s interesting is the Action 5 has more color noise in the shadows, BUT it also has more shadow color information overall.. while the GoPro clips them and jsut goes gray. Not to mention, the action 5 holds the highlights wayyyyyy better since the HDR is better. So I think the few comments I’ve gotten regarding image quality, are more of misconceptions. Seeing flat muted shadows can come off more “filmic” (hence the roll off) compared to the action 5 having more color info that can look noisy when not using noise reduction. Again this is all for like indepth color grading. Anyone shooting in the standard modes ok either camera I think we’ll be fine and happy. Tho again the action 5 has superior HDR performance while keeping it natural looking

The pocket 3 is amazing for vlogging I still choose to use that for a lot of the stuff that I film for BTS but the issue with the pocket 3 is it’s not great for action type stuff because there is some rolling shutter and it’s just not as robust for things like that. But for the action 5 I’ll start using that camera for as you can see all the stuff I shared in this video was more action adventure related stuff

Even though go pro 13 is new it’s a bit of a easy target as it’s a “meh” upgrade lol I am really looking forward to the action 5 to the new ace pro ii whenever that’s coming up Go pro kinda fell of the wagon since 11 in my opinion
